It is the first of the year again and time to renew our annual dues payment. Thanks to those of you who have al-ready done so. Some voluntarily pay more than the rates shown on page two. Having this revenue source (along with entry fees and raffle takings) helps us to be able to hire monthly the quality of bands we are proud to present. We not only want to pay our proven per-formers enough, but we have to pay rent for a decent hall for them to play in and production costs for this news-letter. Aren’t we fortunate to live in an area with a comfortable venue like the Sunnyvale Elks Lodge and so many great bands nearby?

If anyone wants to know what Trad Jazz is, they just heard it, said Jim Rouse, our sound Technician, Clint Bakers New Orleans Jazz Band gave us a rousing afternoon of great music. He surprised us with Katie Cavera on string bass along with his other wonderful musicians. A great afternoon! Clint has promised to start 2018 for us next January. Many thanks to Debbie Owens for getting the January BEAT in the mail. George Trollman will be back on the job for the February mailing. Silicon Gulch has planned a great program for us February 26th. They too will have some stellar musicians with them – you won’t want to miss them!

Barbara Kinney

REMINDER

Love to me seems so gentle, especially when it’s all in bloom. And our ‘God’ made this mental, since he gave this world more room.

I admit we should give our praises, for his creations of many things.Still in life he covers many bases, plus the love, that it all brings.

When I SeeWhen I see what ‘God’ has given, all this beauty with my eyes.Such a creation is from Heaven, even the sun and moon in the sky.

To me the music is in singing, through the night and the day.All of others seem to be mingling, while our eyes see this display.

Silicon Gulch Jazz Band was formed in 1981 to play a Mar-di Gras celebration at a British style pub. The band is still there, every Tuesday night at The Swingin' Door in San Ma-teo playing trad jazz and early swing. Over the years band members have changed, but the spirit of the band’s founder, Joe Bithell, is still in the music. Joe and his wife, Ida, are gone now, but they were highly colorful characters who con-tributed many hours of music to South Bay sessions. This session welcomes back Steve Apple on drums and Rich Owens on piano. Dave Kawamoto is in Hawaii this time, but

we are happy to have Tim Price join us on clarinet and saxo-phone. The rest of us, Jon, Joyce, John and Martin all hope you have a great a time listening and dancing.

Who is that guy playing the drums on most of the Jam sets? That’s Bill Todd. He works behind the scenes, always making sure the drums are set up and ready for the featured band as well as the Jammer Band. He works with Dick Williams, to sign volunteer musicians up for the Jam sets, and gives the final list of musicians who played that day to the editor for recog-nition in the South Bay Beat. What a team! Another member to add here is Lyle Gillison, reed player, who comes in early and sets up the rehearsal room, which is no small feat, for the Jammer Band rehearsals. Then he stays late and puts the room back in order for the Elks. I think we can call this a SUPER team! I’m not finished yet. There’s more to come next month. Joyce Taylor - Banjo
