Throughout high school, LacyAdams was on the move as a cross-

country and track runner. A Wichita Collegiate HighSchool graduate, she started out at Meade High Schoolbefore trading life on the family ranch for city living.Quick to adjust, she was a Wichita River FestivalSchoonermate and landed roles in school productions of“Aida” and “Beauty and the Beast.” With a Jayhawk histo-ry that includes a 1914 graduate, she’ll have no troubleadjusting to life on the Hill as she pursues a degree injournalism. Her parents are John, ’82, and Paula GravesAdams, f’82, g’87. She has KU heritage on both sideswith grandparents Raymond, ’53, and Anne GorbuttAdams, c’04, as well as Dean, e’56, g’63, and Ginny WardGraves, c’57, whose parents were Paul Ward, c’30, andMildred Lee Ward, ’33. Although she’ll bethe fifth generationto attend KU,PatriciaCampbell was afirst-string studentat Blue ValleyNorth High School,

where she made the honor roll,played the viola in the orchestra,

belonged to the Future Business Leaders of America cluband spent her summers helping others on communityservice trips. Teenagers often vow never to be likeMom or Dad. Yet some qualities areworth carrying on. Many in KU’s Classof 2010 have inherited their parents’

good sense and good taste in choosing a college.Here, we feature 224 of those who, like theirancestors, will have their own Mount Oreadstories to share with the next generation.

The ’Hawk heritage chronicled here, in ourlargest edition yet, hails back to 1886 and includesdescendants from some of the earliest professorsand most legendary KU supporters. This year alsomarks the first that freshmen have committedearly to KU through the payment of an enroll-ment deposit, which enabled us to better identifylegacy students. Kim Perry of the AlumniAssociation’s records department, with the helpof University Archives, worked diligently to tracelineage, scouring scores of records. EachAssociation member was contacted and encour-aged to submit information. Despite all ourefforts to ensure the accuracy of this extensiveroster, we recognize that students may haveescaped our detection, and we apologize inadvance for any omissions. Included are all fresh-men who paid their enrollment deposit to theOffice of Admissions and Scholarships by theMay 1 deadline, whose parents are Associationmembers and who submitted information to theAlumni Association by the extended deadline ofJuly 15. Not many students list Pipers of thePlains on their résumés; Andrew

Pettavel does, by virtue of playing drums in the bagpipeband for nearly six years. A Washburn Rural High Schoolgraduate, Andrew’s eclectic activities include summers inFrance, string bass in the school orchestra and an avidinterest in soccer and medieval history. Andrew alsospent much of his high school time caring for his sickgrandmother. His parents are Paul, m’93, and AnneHorton Pettavel, f’74. His grandmother was ElizabethMarshall Horton, c’42, who is the daughter of George,c’17, g’29, and Clara Carpenter Marshall, c’08. Hermother, Helen Weston Carpenter, attended with theClass of 1879.

At Blue Valley West High School,Elizabeth Schulte won several

honors for her drawings, including the Scholastic ArtAward and Westworks Award. She also cheered all fouryears and served as the yearbook editor and chief. Hercrimson and blue family line starts with Professor L.D.Havenhill, p1903, and continues through two sets ofgreat-grandparents: Marshall, e’22, and Mayme WilsonHavenhill, c’25, as well as Marvin, c’32, g’33, and NorineHoward Johnson, ’33. Kirk Whitmer comes to KU fromthe Garden State. A Voorhees, N.J.,

resident, he got his marching orders from EasternRegional High School, where he played in the drum lineand wind ensemble. Kirk’s interests include sketching,basketball, football, golf and snowboarding. His parentsare Scott, b’75, and Sue Gile Whitmer, c’76, d’77. Topeka native Alexandra Nelson is ready to dive intoclasses at KU. She graduated from Washburn Rural HighSchool, where she was on the swimming and diving teamas well as Model U.N., National Honor Society and the

newspaper. She is the daughter of Jay, j’94, and HeidiHemmingsen Nelson, c’83. Her grandparents, James,c’52, m’59, and Joanne Wellman Nelson, ’52, carried onthe tradition started by Joe Wellman, c’27.

It won’t take long for Clarice Penzler to find her feet onMount Oread. A future member of the Rock ChalkDancers, she’s danced for more than 15 years as a privatestudent and on the Lawrence Free State High Schoolpom squad. Also a volleyball, swim and Spanish clubmember, she plans to put her language skills to good useas a double major in Spanish and business. Her KUfamily tree includes parents, Craig, a’81, and Cindy EmigPenzler, c’81, m’85, along with grandparents, Dale, ’56,and Clarice Gertson Emig, c’57, the daughter of EmeryGertson, m’34.

Adam Phillips is a two-year quiz bowl whizand a graduate ofLawrence High School,where he took the stageall four years as a the-atre player. Before com-ing to KU, he journeyed

Graham Stark spenthis days at ShawneeMission East HighSchool ducking and diving as the founder ofthe school’s first dodgeball club. But he did notduck his responsibili-

Clark Stinson of Leawood joins his sister, Katherine, asthe 26th member of his Jayhawk family to head to theHill. Scott Toland grad-uated as a tennis champand cross-country captain from Iola HighSchool, where he stolethe show with roles inseveral school produc-

tions. Managing deadlines and headlines, he served onthe staff of the IHS Messenger and plans to continue hisjournalism pursuits at KU. Brett Barker graduated from Hutchinson High Schooland joins his brother, Ross, c’05, as a Jayhawk. Nostranger to sports, he spent fall of his senior year withthe winning team—the State 6A Championship Footballteam that is—and prepared for afternoons in MarvinGrove with the Ultimate Frisbee Club. Academically, heserved on the student council and earned a spot on thehonor roll. His parents are Stanton, c’76, m’79, and LisaSchmitt Barker, c’77, and his grandfather on Lisa’s side isWarren Schmitt, ’45.

As a leader at StocktonHigh School, ReneeBerkley had her handsin a little bit of every-thing, includingstudent organizationsKAYS, FCCLA andTASK, as well as band,

basketball and volleyball. As if that weren’t enough, shealso helped hold down the fort at the family business,The Stockton National Bank. Her Jayhawk legacyincludes her father, James Berkley, b’72, and her grand-father, Jack Berkley, b’48.

Overland Park ace Matthew Cummings served on thevarsity tennis squad at Blue Valley North High School.His activities also included basketball and membershipin the Mustang Rough Riders. He is the son of Dan

Cummings, b’79, g’86, and Nancy DeYoung Lauerman,c’79, the daughter of Leon, b’50, and Winifred DeYoung, c’50.

After four years of cheerleading, Caroline DavisDeGoler of Leawood will have no trouble rooting forthe crimson and blue. A graduate of Shawnee MissionEast High School, the honor roll student also sharedmuch of her time with SHARE—a community serviceorganization—and received awards for outstandingscholastic achievement and the all-star award from theUniversal Cheerleading Association. Her parents areJames, c’83, and Janie Daugherty DeGoler, c’82, and hergrandparents are William Daugherty, c’48, and James,p’56, and Patricia Davis DeGoler, c’55.

Andrew Demo of Shawnee follows his parents,Bradford Demo, d’84, and Janine Gracy, d’85, g’91, aswell as his grandfather, Jerry Demo, l’59, to the Hill. Agraduate of Mill Valley High School, he spent much ofhis time chipping in on the school’s golf team. He alsoled his class as student body president and valedictorian.Andrew volunteered as a math tutor and wrote a grant tosupport tobacco prevention. He plans an engineeringmajor at KU.

Kathleen Kelly Dempsey, a seasoned swimmer, plansto make a splash at KU. She graduated from Lawrence

Grayson Dillonfound his homeon the BishopSeaburyAcademy courtas captain of thebasketball teamand will no

doubt be at home at KU, the birthplace of the sport. Inaddition to basketball, he played tennis, ran cross-coun-try and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, LINKand Walk to the Future. He is the son of Reed, c’79, andStacey Satterthwaite Dillon, c’79, of Lawrence and thegrandson of Richard, ’51, and Carolyn Dillon, ’53.

Katherine Drisko of Prairie Village trades PembrokeHill School for the Hill. She comes to KU as a lacrossepioneer, who co-founded the first women’s Kansas Cityteam. She also danced on the varsity squad, took thefield hockey field and volunteered at OperationBreakthrough. Her parents are Robert, m’79, and

Jeanne Glotzbach Drisko, m’79, who was recently namedthe Hugh D. Riordan Professor in OrthomolecularMedicine at the KU Medical Center. Her Jayhawk lineagecontinues through her paternal grandfather, RobertDrisko, c’39, m’41.

fill. Like her parents, she graduated as her class valedicto-rian and will be a schol hall resident. At KU she plans tofollow her father with an English major, but will strikeout on her own with study abroad plans in the U.K.Amanda received several scholarships including a Coca-Cola merit scholarship and an Academic All-Star designa-tion from the Lawrence Journal World. ture. Calen is the son of Terry, d’83, g’89, and KimberlyAnn Gerstenberger, ’84, and the grandson of WayneGerstenberger, c’56.

Ashley Green ofOverland Park gradu-ated from Blue ValleyNorthwest HighSchool, where she wasan honor student. Shevolunteered at AnimalHaven, and worked at

the Oxford Animal Hospital. A true animal lover, sheshould have no trouble embracing the KU mascot. Sheplans to major in architecture. Her parents are Jerry, g’84,and Karen Wayne Green, c’85. Her paternal grand-mother is Sharon King Green, ’62.

Eagle Scout Jeffery Griswold of Wichita graduated fromGoddard High School and will follow his family’s trail allthe way to the KU aerospace engineering program. Jeffgot his engineering start at the national BEST roboticscompetition in high school, where he also lettered in tennis and bowling and performed in a comedy sketchtroupe.
