Javier Pérez Herreras (Spain, 1967) is an architect and phD by the university of Navarre. His professional practice is based on an insistent investigation on new conceptions of inhabitation and the unedited city they generate. It is from this search that proposals like Fence House, Umbrella House and Houses with three patios arise. Amongst his other projects, fruit of that ‘other investigation’ that architectural contests comprises, the most notable are the Parliament of Navarre, Ericsson’s technology Center in Biscay or San Jorge University Campus. With these projects he represented Spain in the 8th Architecture Exhibition at the Biennale di Venezia. He has also participated in Young Spanish Architects 2006 organized by Camuñas Foundation and in Young Architects of Spain organized by the Spanish government in 2008. In 2002 he founded Taller Básico de Arquitectura along with Javier Quintana and he has been an advisor for COAM architecture magazine since 2008. He has been professor at UPNa and IE universities, and has been invited to teach several courses at a number of different schools and universities. He is the author of “Cajas de Aire”, a narrative on the modern adventure of dwelling, and of “Ideo[lógica]”, an equation notebook on ideas and word meaning in architecture. He was dean of San Jorge University, where he received his gold medal in 2009. Currently he teaches Architectural Project and Design at the University of Zaragoza.

Javier Pérez Herreras (Gijón, 1967) is a phD from the University of Navarre (Summa Cum Laude, 1999). Along with his research activity that began in the Projects department of the Polytechnic University of Madrid he has carried out a professional activity based on public contests. His research is carried out from within different universities and also feeds his professional activity in Taller Básico de Arquitectura -www.tallerbasico.es- studio founded with Javier Quintana de Uña. The convergent aims of his practice are:

-A creative and artistic goal, which analyses and promotes new spatial and living spaces.

-A methodological goal, which analyses and promotes academic models which express and transmit these goals.

The creative and artistic route

This creative and artistic route starts with his doctoral thesis Boxes of air (Cajas de aire), which is published in the Architecture Collection by the University of Navarre (Pamplona, 2000), and which analyses avant-garde living spaces and the human being they generate. This publication is used as basic bibliography in the subject ‘Architectural Projects’ in other universities: Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Open Course Ware, Projects VII and VIII); ETSAUN (Projects II) and Public University of Navarre (Contemporary Industrial Aesthetics). From this thesis three lines of research come forth, of public and private advocacy:-New dwelling formulas-City and New Public Tipologies-Architectural Anatomies

Following the same line of research, in 2002, he was invited by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Housing to participate in the Spanish Pavilion at the 8th Mostra Internazionale d’Architettura of the Biennale de Venezia, where he presented ‘Beyond Desire’, a proposal which investigates, along with Apezeguía and Quintana, future living spaces based on the ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’ by Del Bosco (Rueda Publishers, Madrid, 2002). Two years later, Pérez-Herreras’s proposal for ‘400,000 houses’ was awarded and exhibited at the Barcelona FORUM. (Quaderns d’arquitectura i urbanisme. Barcelona 2004). In this project a genetic and variable condition of the human being is shown as the citizen-creator of a new urban model.

Pérez Herreras was selected by the Superior Council of Architects in Spain (CSCAE) in the following contests that it promotes on Social Housing (2004), Singular Residences (2005) and Urban Solutions for the Future (2006). At the Fourth Congress of Architects in Spain, he presents “The city in which we look” (Valencia, 2009) and at the Fourth International Conference on Design Principles and Practices held at the University of Illinois (Chicago 2010). His work on “The fragmented house” was selected for the Fifth Festival dell'Architettura, Biennial Comunitá–Architecttura (Parma 2009-2010), and published and showcased on a travelling exhibition from Europe to the United States. He has also participated in the Arquitectonics Network: Architecture and Research. The beginning of a Transarchitectural World with the conference “Changing Cities” (UPC Barcelona, 2010).

The 'built expresson' of this line of investigation is portrayed in projects like “Houses for lecturers of the UPNa” (Navarre, 1999) which won the COAVN, Hispalyt and Sedigas awards, and was catalogued by the CSCAE (2003) in their selection of Social Housing, as well as showcased and published in several national magazines (CONArquitectura 1/ 2001, Munilla-Lería/ 2003). Another project, a direct result of the investigation on dwelling is Umbrella House (Navarre, 2004), which was selected by the Camuñas Foundation at their 9th Young Architects Exhibition and also for a new tender announced by CSCAE for Research Houses. This has also been published in several international journals (PASAJES 72/2005, VIA Arquitectura 16/2006). From the city and its new public typologies, using the contest as a place for investigation, he develops projects like the Conde Gajes Park (2nd prize 1996), New Auditorium of Navarre (2nd prize 1997), New Parliament of Navarre ( 1st prize 2003), Talasotherapy Center in Gijón (2003), Day-care and medical Center plaza in Gorraiz, Navarre (1st prize, 2004), Library and Cultural Centre in Pamplona (1st prize, 2005) or the Park and Civic Centre in Orkoyen (1st prize, 2007).

As a result of his research on new dwelling models and the city that they generate, Pérez Herreras has taught several courses at the Public University of Navarre. From 2000 to 2002 he gave a course on “Modern housing. Space, Place and Dwelling”. During the summer courses of 2002 he taught a course titled “What is left to do” at the University of Navarre. During 2005 and 2006 he gave a course on “The next city and its environmental condition”. Because of this environmental and architectural condition of the city that he investigates, he is invited to present his research “Artificial Natures. Organic Geometries” at the ECOS 2009 Practical Encounter for Sustainable Construction promoted by HOLCIM and celebrated at the city of research in Costa Rica .

Regarding the research on structure and space as Architectural Anatomy, an evident mixture of engineering and architecture, Pérez Herreras has taught the doctoral course “Contemporary Industrial Esthetics” (UPNa 1999/2005). His research supports the course “Art and design in Engineering” (2004/2008) and he has directed the degree from UPNa on “Design and Innovation” (2006/2008). On this topic he publishes “The structure of the Idea” at the 7th International Congress on Project Engineering at the Public University of Navarre (2005). Along these same lines he publishes “Shukov's towers” in the magazine Arquitectos (2008) and “Architectural Anatomy” at the First International Conference Structures & Architecture of the University of Miho (Taylor&Francis Group, 2010). He was invited to participate in the following edition of this conference, ICSA2013 as part of the International Scientific Comittee. A built expression and part of this line of research is the Ericsson Technology Centre, a project designed alongside Alonso del Val, at the Zamudio Technological Park in 2001. This project has won the Sedigas award (Award for the best natural gas facility), Honorary mention at Veteco (Award for the best façade), and runner-up at Construmat (Award for construction innovation), apart from the COAVN and FAD awards of 2002. The project has been published extensively internationally and was catalogued in the Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture (London, 2004). A project that stems from this research is the Civic Centre in Pamplona, awarded by the Institute of Tubular Construction and selected for the Spanish Architecture Biennial in 2007.

From this union of investigation and professional practice he has developed 4 patented and registered property products that link technology and design, all within the European Union.

The Methodological Route.

As regards pedagogical systems and methodologies, Pérez-Herreras commenced a new research project after his doctoral thesis, which proposed a new methodological approach to teaching and learning. In 2006, he published Ideo-Lógica: Notebook of Equations with UPNa, where he pointed out the need to renovate the academic model. In this book he proposes a learning system from the re-reading of the accepted in order to find one’s own ideas: a major issue concerning new students coming from the European Area of Higher Education. Two lines of research stem from this, of academic implications:

-New teaching formulas

-New spaces for research and investigation

It proposes a search and renovation of the spaces dedicated to these new methodologies; classrooms and workshops, in order to even reach the campus itself housing these spaces. This methodological route is developed from a wider vision when Pérez-Herreras undertakes the responsibility of promoting and developing this academic project within the framework of a new university: San Jorge University (Aragón, Spain).

From 2005 to 2009, Pérez-Herreras worked, as Rector, not only in the implementation of this teaching project, but also as architect of a new campus, which converges in the expression of a new genetic code: academic and spatial, up to standard with the Excellence Campuses that the Ministry of Education wishes to promote. As a result of his work and under his direction 9 degrees have been established, including Architecture, along with 5 Masters and 3 phD programs, all located within the EEES. He also led the Academic Consultant Council in redacting the degree memory of Architecture at the IE University, verified by Aneca in 2008 and included in the ranking Hidden Gems of Global Architecture Education by DesignIntelligence, USA 2010.

He has designed and constructed three new faculties and a new campus (PASAJES 107, 2009) in agreement with this new academic project that bases teaching on a renewed “creative reason. This project has been presented to the highest authorities at the universities of California, Baylor, Stanford, NIU, Chicago, Cork, Galway, Dublin, Limerick and Monterrey. The implantation of this teaching and spatial project has earned a recent article titled “The white room” published in the newspaper El Mundo (18/03/2009and one of these buildings won a FAD award in 2008 (ON Diseño 295). This work and his research has been presented and published in several international congresses and magazines: “An Academic Matrix” at the 5th International Conference on Innovation in Teaching of Higher Education, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Terengganu, Malasia 2009; “An Academic Itinerary” at the International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences of the University of Cambridge, 2010; and “Intellectual Nomadism” at the International Journal of Arts & Sciences, Harvard 2010. He has participated as a lecturer at the summit that UNESCO promoted in the University of Costa Rica, on the universities of the 21st century titled “Transdisciplinarity, Complexity and Ecoformation”, San José 2010. Since 2010 he participates as an academic consultant in the project for the new faculty of architecture at the University of Costa Rica.

Pérez Herreras develops most of his teaching career from 1996 until 2010 within the Public University of Navarre, since 2005 as an associate phD. In this university he has taught common courses (Design, 1996/2004), elective courses (Modern housing, 2000/2002), phD courses (Contemporary Industrial Aesthetic, 1999/2005) and directed “Design and Innovation” (2006/2008), promoting in all of them the “creative reason” as the basis of teaching. On the topic of creative reason he presents “Thinking (The Future)” at the Arts and Knowing international congress held at Trinity Western University in Canada (2009); and in the encounter on Enterprising Creativity: Innovation and the Future of Arts and Humanities Research of the University of Leeds he gives a lecture titled “Stopping to think”. He was selected to present “Seduction and Discourse in the University” at the British Academy of London, 2010 and “Nuclear matter: Enhance the look: Mainstream” at the International Congress “Architectural Design between Teaching and Research”, Bari Polytechnic School, 2011. Currently Pérez Herreras is the professor behind the course “Projects of integration” at the IE University School fo Architecture.

Linked on this line of work Pérez Herreras has researched and developed, using idea contests as a tool, new proposals aimed at spaces for research and education. Examples of this proposals are the Ericsson Technology Centre at Zamudio Tech Park (Vizcaya, 2001), BIOKILAB research labs at Miñano Tech Park (Álava, 2010), the aforementioned San Jorge University Campus (2007), the Faculty of Communication (2007), the Rectory (2007), the School of Architecture (2008) and the Faculty of Health Sciences (Zaragoza, 2010).

In 2005 he receives the Aneca accreditation as faculty phD member of the Public University of Navarre and in 2009 as a head professor of the University. His teaching activity during the period of 2003/2008 was valued as Excellent. To date, he has been awarded on 30 different contests for ideas and projects, from which he has obtained 19 award-contracts, 21 awards for quality of the project and 60 publications in magazines and specialized journals. He has also participated in 22 expositions: 14 national and 8 international ones. He has been a part of 29 congresses and international summits. He is the author of 44 indexed scientific publications and 25 publications on un-indexed relative quality publications. He is also the author of two books and 20 book chapters: 6 of them catalogued at Columbia University, 5 at Harvard University, 5 at Yale University, 6 at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, 4 at the Instituto di Architettura di Venezia, 2 at MIT, 2 at the Technische Universität Berlin, 1 at the Ecole d’Architecture de Paris, 1 in the Université Catholique de Louvain, 1 at Delft University of Technology and 1 in Princeton.

He has been a member of the Ruling Council of the Agency for Quality and Prospective of the Aragonese University (2006/2009). He has also been Counsel for the I+D program at the Rafael Escolá Foundation (2005/2010). In 2008, he became an Advisor of the official journal ‘Arquitectura’ published by the Official Professional Institute of Architects of Madrid. He is Associate Editor of the International Design Journal, the International Social Sciences Journal and the Internacional Journal of the Arts in Society by Common Grounds Publisher for 2010. He has co-directed doctorate thesis and been a member of phD tribunals. He has recently been chosen by the Spanish Ministry of Housing, under the International and national committee of teaching and professional experts in the Young Architects of Spain, exhibited and published in Madrid (JAE. Madrid, 2008) and later at Columbia University of New York in April and May, 2009, and in Brussels in resonance with the Spanish presidency of the European Union (Jeunes Architectes D'Espagne, 2010). At the last National Congress of Spanish Architects (Valencia, 2009) he was elected author of one of the ten favorite works in the last eight years. In October of 2009 he receives the Gold Medal of the University of San Jorge and two of his works are showcased at the World Architect Day in Navarre.
