Four bogies of the Nanded- bound train derailed as the truck broke the closed boom gate at Madakasira after “overlooking all safety warnings” and hit the H-1 coach at around 2.20 AM, the Railways said. Venkatesh Naik, Congress MLA from Deodurg in Raichur district of Karnataka who has been a four-time Lok Sabha MP, was among three passengers killed, officials said, adding the driver of the truck and two rail- way employees — an AC coach mechanic and an attender — also died in the mishap. Two injured persons have been shifted to hospital in Bangalore. However, DIG of Anantapur, K Satyanarayana, said the truck cleaner was among those killed in the mishap while the driver fled. He said it appeared the truck’s brakes had failed, but the actual cause of the accident will be ascertained after an inquiry. The AC bogie was crushed and three sleeper coaches of the train derailed in the incident in Anantapur district, which borders Karnataka and is located around 350 km from Hyderabad. Railways has ordered an inquiry into the mishap by Commissioner Railway Safety of Southern Circle who will submit the report at the earliest, Railway spokesperson Anil Saxena said in Delhi. Many trains were affected in the section and have been divert- ed, according to Railway officials. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said it was an unfortunate incident and conveyed his condo- lences to the families of the vic- tims. He said ex-gratia will be given to the affected. Cogress President Sonia Gandhi and party Vice President Rahul Gandhi also expressed anguish over the loss of lives. In a statement, Railways said the manned level crossing gate was closed to facilitate safe pas- sage of Train No 16594 and red flasher light showing danger was on and continuous siren/hooter was sounded to warn the road users. Besides, there are speed breakers before the L C Gate and the area is well-lit, it said. The loaded vehicle approached the level crossing at high speed, broke the closed boom gate and hit the H-1 coach of the running train. The truck driver did not heed to any of the warnings, the Railways said, adding it resulted in derailment of four coaches. The derailment was due to “road lorry hitting the train at closed Level Crossing Gate over- looking all safety warnings,” it said. "JD(U) demands to know under what circumstances such a joint venture between Ramdev's company and DRDO has been permitted and what were the norms adopted for such an alliance," JD-U general secretary K C Tyagi said in a statement. "The party strongly con- demns the saffronisation of an elite institution like the DRDO, which has produced one of the greatest Indians in the last centu- ry like late Bharat Ratna Abdul Kalam Azad, the former President of India," he said. "It is appalling and indeed shocking to see as how low the Government has fallen to protect and award an uneducated self- proclaimed Baba with no formal education and allow his organisa- tion, which produces dubious products and has been under scrutiny of various organisa- tions," he said. His remarks came a day after India's premier defence research organisation DRDO roped in Patanjali Ayurveda Limited to manufacture and market herbal supplements and food products developed by it. DRDO yesterday entered into licensing agreements with Ramdev's company for transfer of Seabuckthorn technology based products developed by Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR). (UNI) NEW DELHI, Aug 24: Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar today pitched for measures to sensitise men on bringing gender parity in media, entertainment and other sectors to end the "discrimination" being faced by women. "We need to consistently do this awareness campaign particu- larly in the family and office environment. With education, awareness and empowerment and the result-giving ability, I think the day of equal opportuni- ty is not very far," he said. Speaking at a "national dia- logue" on 'An Equal Space: Gender Parity in the Media and Entertainment Sector' organised by ASSOCHAM, Javadekar said that the world has lost a great deal of talent by not partnering with women. "Since ages, mankind has been unable to use such a great pool of talent, potential and capa- bility as it did not recognise the power of women. And even today we don't know whether or not America will get its first women President," he said. He said that women have the power of 4Cs which stands for compassion, conviction, consis- tency and courage. "I believe that women have more of these qual- ities than men," he said. He said women are making mark in every field and taking over men. "If Vidya Balan and Kangana Ranaut can single- handedly bring success to a movie then it should be a worry for Salman (Khan) and others," he said. National Commission for Women Chairperson Lalita Kumarmangalam said that through this dialogue, the gov- ernment would flag issues that have not been talked about with reference to gender bias within Media and Entertainment while calling for suggestions to ensure parity. "We would like to ask for solutions and ideas and let us know what government can do to promote gender equity," she said. The Chairperson noted that there are less than 15 per cent women directors in the Bollywood. "Even as contribution of women in these industries has been accepted, there is an invisi- ble barrier that still exists as most women do not get equal remuner- ation. Women from Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes who are not educated face more prob- lems in getting jobs," she said. The first women make-up artist Charu Khurana was allowed to work with legal inter- vention as unions who control the film industry refused to give her job, she said. "We had to appeal in the Supreme Court to allow Charu to work. And before she came to us, people did not even think about the fact that there are no women make-up artist. Now there are around 150-200 artists working in the industry," she said. "There are spot-boys in film industry. But has anyone heard of spot-girls.... Very few women are working as light and sound tech- nicians," she said. Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand said that the only thing that women need is free- dom to choose and right to excel. "What women today want is the freedom to choose and the right to excel. They get the opportunity, it will happen. How the opportunity comes that mat- ters. There is only one lady Supreme Court judge out of about 36 judges. The proportion speaks for itself," she said. (UNI) NEW DELHI, Aug 24: CBI today informed a spe- cial court that it has not yet sent necessary records to the compe- tent authority for according sanc- tion to prosecute two senior gov- ernment servants for their alleged roles in a coal scam case. The agency told this to Special CBI Judge Bharat Parashar who had on August 5 directed them to conduct further probe in a case allegedly involv- ing Vikash Metal and Power Ltd (VMPL). CBI sought some time from the court to send the records to competent authority on the issue of sanction to prosecute K S Kropha, the then joint secretary in the Ministry of Coal (MoC), and K C Samria, then Director (CA-I), MoC, for alleged offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act. "It has been submitted (by CBI) that the necessary records have not been sent yet to the competent authority. Some more time has been sought in this regard. Accordingly, matter be now put up on September 2," the court said. The court had earlier asked CBI to conduct further probe in the case saying prima facie "active collusion" was found on part of the public servants for not verifying the claims made by the firm. The court's order had come in the case in which CBI had filed a supplementary final report on April 7 this year after the court had last year refused to accept the closure report and directed the agency to further investigate the matter. The case pertains to alleged irregularities in allocation of Moira and Madhujore (North and South) coal blocks in West Bengal to VMPL. (PTI) Coal scam: CBI yet to send necessary records for sanction NEW DELHI, Aug 24: Amid a bloodbath in the markets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today reviewed the situation and favoured push- ing ahead with the reforms agenda and taking more steps to strengthen the economy. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told reporters that the Prime Minister took stock of equity and currency markets, and was of the opinion that "our economy is sta- ble" but more needed to be done. The review of the economy at the highest level came against the backdrop of the benchmark Sensex plunging by 1,624.51 points to 25,741.56 -- its lowest level since August 2014 -- and nearly Rs 7 lakh crore getting wiped out from the investors' wealth. Besides, the rupee also fell the most in 23 months to hit two-year low at 66.64 against the US dollar. "PM is of the opinion that in order to further strengthen our economy, we should take more steps," Jaitley said, adding there will be no change in the strategy and the initiative to attract investors would continue. He said further discussion will be held with private and public partners to take "meas- ures to attract investors and use the situation as an opportunity". The Prime Minister, he said, is keen that the present global crisis should be converted into an opportunity for India. "We are not (offering) any packages as of now as our internal fundamentals like industrial pro- duction, capital and public expen- diture have improved," Jaitley said, adding normal reforms in the pipeline will continue. He said that the global fac- tors are transient in nature and all global markets have been adversely impacted. Stating that the Government and the regulators were keenly monitoring global develop- ments, he said, "our parameters are strong. Our growth will be maintained." Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha said the PM dis- cussed ways to push forward reforms agenda and hoped India will continue to be an attractive investment destination. Sinha also said the markets were expected to be volatile for some time. Speaking about market situa- tion, Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian said that there is a fundamental reassess- ment of global markets broadly. Commodity producers affected due to China's slow- down, he said, adding that decline in oil prices will be like a further tax cut. (PTI) PM reviews stock, currency situation; keen on more reforms: FM Maha to buy Ambedkar's London house in 15 days: Minister MUMBAI, Aug 24: The Maharashtra Government is all set to acquire the owner- ship of the three-storey bungalow in London, where Dalit icon and architect of Indian Constitution Babasaheb Ambedkar lived as a student in the 1920s, within 15 days. Refuting reports that the owner of the bungalow might pull out of the deal, a state minister said the "exchange of contracts" for the purchase of the bungalow will take place in two days and the state will get its ownership within 15 days. All procedures related to acquiring the 2,050 sq ft bungalow will be over soon and it will be handed over to the State Government within the next 15 days, state Social Justice Minister Rajkumar Badole said. "There is nothing called last day for the purchase of this house. It has been decided that the exchange of contract between both par- ties will take place within two days. There is no monetary problem as far as the Government is concerned. There have been hiccups in the process, but the Government will certainly buy the house with- in 15 days," Badole said. He alleged the reports suggesting that the property's owner had threatened to withdraw the offer it it was not processed by today were "planted" by the Opposition to cast the Government in bad light. "The Opposition (Congress and the NCP) could do nothing about it in 15 years. When we are taking a step, they want to pull us back by planting stories that would put the Government unnec- essarily in a bad light," he said. Reacting to the charge, Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam said Badole's statement "smells of hypocrisy" and proves that this gov- ernment has no respect for Ambedkar. "The cultural affairs minister (Vinod Tawde) went to London and announced that the Government will buy the house. If the Government did intend to buy the home, where has the money that they claim was allocated gone? We have just highlighted that the Government is disrespectful towards Ambedkar," Nirupam said. The State Government had announced earlier its decision to acquire the property at Rs 31 crore and to be preserved as a memo- rial to Ambedkar, an architect of Indian Constitution besides being the most vocal champion of the rights of the suppressed classes in the country. The BJP-led Government headed by Devendra Fadnavis has also made a budgetary provision of Rs 40 crore for buying the London bungalow. However, bureaucratic delays in departments concerned has resulted in the transaction to take far too long. (PTI) CBI registers 5 more cases in Saradha scam NEW DELHI, Aug 24: CBI has registered five more cases in connection with the chit fund scam in Assam arising out of alleged financial bunglings by West Bengal-based Saradha group of companies. The cases have been registered under IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy, cheating and criminal misappropriation against five companies operating in the northeastern state for allegedly duping gullible investors of their hard earned money, agency sources said. Rose Valley, Silicon Multiservices Limited, Uro Agro India Limited and URO Infra Realty India Ltd and Prayag Infotech Hi- rise Ltd are the companies against whom the cases were registered yesterday. The move almost coincided with one of the prominent Congress leaders from the state Himanta Biswa Sarma, a suspect in the scam who has been questioned for his alleged proximity with Saradha group chairman Sudipta Sen and whose house has been searched, expressing desire to join the BJP yesterday. Sarma was a powerful minister in the Tarun Gogoi Cabinet since 2001 but was dropped by the chief minister after he alleged- ly spearheaded a campaign to dislodge him. After reporting the matter to police, the girl uploaded the pho- tograph of the accused on Facebook with the post soon going viral. The accused, identified as Sarabjit Singh (26), has been arrested and booked under Sections 354A (punishment for sexual harassment) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of IPC, said a senior police offi- cial. Singh is a resident of the Paschimpuri area of west Delhi. DCP (West) Pushpendra Kumar also said that Delhi Police have announced a cash reward of Rs 5,000 for the girl, a final year English literature student. According to police, the mat- ter was reported at around 8 P.M. Yesterday and an FIR registered. In her complaint, the girl told police that she was confronted by the accused at a traffic intersec- tion in Tilak Marg, where he allegedly passed lewd remarks at her with several others looking on. The woman reportedly took a photograph of the number plate of Singh’s motorbike and, when she was about to take a photo- graph of the accused, he posed for it, despite being told that she was going to report the matter to police. He later sped away, said the police official. (PTI)

solutions and ideas and let usknow what government can do topromote gender equity," she said.

The Chairperson noted thatthere are less than 15 per centwomen directors in theBollywood.

"Even as contribution ofwomen in these industries hasbeen accepted, there is an invisi-ble barrier that still exists as mostwomen do not get equal remuner-ation. Women from ScheduleCastes and Schedule Tribes whoare not educated face more prob-lems in getting jobs," she said.

The first women make-upartist Charu Khurana wasallowed to work with legal inter-vention as unions who control thefilm industry refused to give herjob, she said.

"We had to appeal in theSupreme Court to allow Charu towork. And before she came to us,people did not even think aboutthe fact that there are no womenmake-up artist. Now there arearound 150-200 artists workingin the industry," she said.

"There are spot-boys in filmindustry. But has anyone heard ofspot-girls.... Very few women areworking as light and sound tech-nicians," she said.

Additional Solicitor GeneralPinky Anand said that the onlything that women need is free-dom to choose and right to excel.

"What women today want isthe freedom to choose and theright to excel. They get theopportunity, it will happen. Howthe opportunity comes that mat-ters. There is only one ladySupreme Court judge out ofabout 36 judges. The proportionspeaks for itself," she said. (PTI)

Maha to buy Ambedkar's Londonhouse in 15 days: Minister

MUMBAI, Aug 24:

The Maharashtra Government is all set to acquire the owner-ship of the three-storey bungalow in London, where Dalit icon andarchitect of Indian Constitution Babasaheb Ambedkar lived as astudent in the 1920s, within 15 days.

Refuting reports that the owner of the bungalow might pull outof the deal, a state minister said the "exchange of contracts" for thepurchase of the bungalow will take place in two days and the statewill get its ownership within 15 days.

All procedures related to acquiring the 2,050 sq ft bungalowwill be over soon and it will be handed over to the StateGovernment within the next 15 days, state Social Justice MinisterRajkumar Badole said.

"There is nothing called last day for the purchase of this house. It has been decided that the exchange of contract between both par-ties will take place within two days. There is no monetary problemas far as the Government is concerned. There have been hiccups inthe process, but the Government will certainly buy the house with-in 15 days," Badole said.

He alleged the reports suggesting that the property's owner hadthreatened to withdraw the offer it it was not processed by todaywere "planted" by the Opposition to cast the Government in badlight.

"The Opposition (Congress and the NCP) could do nothingabout it in 15 years. When we are taking a step, they want to pullus back by planting stories that would put the Government unnec-essarily in a bad light," he said.

Reacting to the charge, Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam saidBadole's statement "smells of hypocrisy" and proves that this gov-ernment has no respect for Ambedkar.

"The cultural affairs minister (Vinod Tawde) went to Londonand announced that the Government will buy the house. If theGovernment did intend to buy the home, where has the money thatthey claim was allocated gone? We have just highlighted that theGovernment is disrespectful towards Ambedkar," Nirupam said.

The State Government had announced earlier its decision toacquire the property at Rs 31 crore and to be preserved as a memo-rial to Ambedkar, an architect of Indian Constitution besides beingthe most vocal champion of the rights of the suppressed classes inthe country.

The BJP-led Government headed by Devendra Fadnavis hasalso made a budgetary provision of Rs 40 crore for buying theLondon bungalow.

However, bureaucratic delays in departments concerned hasresulted in the transaction to take far too long. (PTI)
