IMPORTANCE OF Objectives BIODIVERSITY At the end of the lesson, you should be able to: 1. Classify the value of biodiversity 2. Identify the decrease in biodiversity because of several human activities and other factors 3. Demonstrate on understanding of ways to conserve biodiversity 4. Value the importance of biodiversity Motivation Guide questions What do you see in the pictures? Are they important to you? Do you value these resources? Guide questions What do you see in the pictures? Do you think if one of them becomes extinct it will affect us? Why? After knowing that these organisms are important to us for our daily living, how do you feel? What ways do you think can you do to help conserve them? Activity Group yourselves into groups of 3. Think of species that fall into the 3 categories of valuing BIODIVERSITY. You have 5 minutes to prepare and 3 minutes to present. Three Categories of valuing species Direct Economic Value We get products from many species in different kingdoms. They are sources of food, medicine, clothing, shelter and biomass for energy. Indirect Economic Value Benefits produced by species even if we are not using them because of ecological interdependence. Aesthetic Value Species that gives us a good feeling because of their beautiful appearance and the entertainment they bring. Materials: Print outs or through Powerpoint presentation projector The species you mentioned are all part of biodiversity. They are valuable for their products, for their role in keeping the environment healthy and simply for their beauty. On the sad note, some species are now endangered or threatened to extinction. Let us view video clips to understand why. Discussion Materials: Video clips Powerpoint presentation projector Guide Questions: What are the species you saw in the video clip? What do you think will be the outcome if they will be extinct? How do you feel that these species are endemic in the Philippines? What are human activities that you think will make these species extinct? Do you know of ways to protect these species? Conserving Species: An act to promote the Importance of Biodiversity From the knowledge you gained in your research work, group yourselves into five groups and be ready for a play presentation about conserving biodiversity. Presentation should be at least 5 minutes. Go to the library or computer laboratory to research on the ways to conserve biodiversity. Submit your outputs next meeting. Coordinate with the librarian or the head/in-charge of the computer lab for proper documentation and protocol. GUIDE QUESTIONS: 1. What are the ways to conserve species? 2. Why is conservation important? 3. What are the organizations or agencies that promote and do conservation efforts? Enumerate their advocacies and accomplishments. Activity

Group yourselves into groups of 3. Think of species that fall into the 3 categories of valuing BIODIVERSITY. You have 5 minutes to prepare and 3 minutes to present.

Three Categories of valuing speciesDirect Economic ValueWe get products from many species in different kingdoms. They are sources of food, medicine, clothing, shelter and biomass for energy.

Indirect Economic ValueBenefits produced by species even if we are not using them because of ecological interdependence.

Conserving Species: An act to promote the Importance of Biodiversity

From the knowledge you gained in your research work, group yourselves into five

groups and be ready for a play presentation about conserving

biodiversity. Presentation should be at least 5 minutes.

Go to the library or computer laboratory to research on the ways to conserve biodiversity. Submit your outputs next meeting. Coordinate with the librarian or the head/in-charge of the computer lab for proper documentation and protocol.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:1. What are the ways to conserve species?2. Why is conservation important?3. What are the organizations or agencies that promote and do conservation efforts? Enumerate their advocacies and accomplishments.
