The old man replied, "I have had thislump many years and would notwithout good reason part with it; butyou may have it, or an eye or my nose

either if you wish". So the devils laidhold of it, twisting and pulling, andtook it off without giving him anypain, and put it away as a pledgethat he would come back. Just thenthe day began to dawn and the birdsto sing, so the devils hurried away.

The old man felt his face andfound it quite smooth and not atrace of the lump left. He forgot allabout cutting wood, and hastenedhome. His wife seeing him, ex-claimed in great surprise "what has

happened to you". So he told herall that had befallen him.

Now among the neighbours therewas another old man who had a biglump on the left side of his face.

Hearing all about how the old jman had got rid of his lump, hedetermined that he would also trythe same plan to get rid of his lump.So he went and crept into the hol-low tree and waited for the devilsto come. Sure enough, they camejust as he was told. They sat down,drank wine and made merry just asthey did before. The old man afraidand trembling crept out of the

' hollow tree. The devils welcomedhim saying, "the old man has come,

now let us see him dance" This oldman was awkward and did not danceas well as the other. So the devilscried out, "You dance badly, and aregetting worse and worse, we willgive you back the lump which wetook from you as a pledge"- Uponthis one of the devils brought thelump and stuck it on the other sideof his face; so the old man returnedhome with a lump on each side ofhis face.
