•A pastry from the western world (If you don’t know, the western world is the United States, and that area. We’re know as “Westerners”).

•Brought to Japan from the western world. On the next slide, Tsubokura is calling cakes “Western Candies”, though us “Westerners” say they are pastries, not candies.

•I don’t think I need to go into much detail about what a cake is…

Pocky

•Originally called “Chocoteck” when first sold in 1965 (Do the math; Pocky is 43 years old as of 2008!).

•Made 30 billion yen in its first two years (About $288,186,281.29).

•Changed to “Pocky” after the Japanese onomatopoeia for the noise it makes when bitten, “pokkin”.

•First flavor was chocolate, then almond (1971) and then strawberry (1977).

Dango•A Japanese dumpling, made from mochiko (a form of rice flour).

•Often served with green tea.

•Often served on a skewer, with three or four dumplings per stick.

•To the left: “Bocchan Dango”, which always has three colors; the first one is colored by red beans, the second is colored by eggs, and the third is colored by green tea.

•A carbonated soft-drink.

•Widely consumed during warm festival days and nights!

•What makes it different from other bottled soft drinks is that it has a small glass ball inside, and when the bottle is finally opened, the ball drops down into the throat of the bottle, stopping the flow of the drink. This can make drinking ramune difficult for first-timers.

Taiyaki

•Literally mean “baked sea bream”.

•The most common filling is red bean paste, but other common ones include custard, chocolate, and cheese (some even have okonomiyaki or sausage inside). The fish shape itself is made using regular pancake or waffle batter.

•First baked in 1909 (99 years old, and 56 years older than Pocky, as of 2008), in a sweet shop in Azabu, Tokyo, called “Naniwaya”.

Taiyaki is often used in anime!

•“Nikuman” (niku-manju) are steamed cakes with seasoned ground pork filling (or other ingredients).

•“Niku” also means “meat” in Japanese.

•Nikuman are popularly eaten as snacks in fall and winter.

Red Bean Paste

•Also known as “azuki bean paste” or “anko”. In the picture to the right, Orihime (the redhead) calls it “sweet bean paste”.

•Despite it’s name, it is actually very sweet.

•Used and found in many japanese sweets, such as anpan, daifuku, and taiyaki.

•Used in Chinese foods and dishes.

•Made by boiling and mashing azuki beans, and then sweetening them with honey or sugar.

“Matcha aisu kurīmu”

•Also known as green tea ice cream. “Matcha” is a form of green tea, “aisu kurīmu” is the Japanese pronunciation of “ice cream”.

•A very popular flavor in Japan and other parts of eastern Asia.

•The name “matcha” comes from a specific kind of green tea used in tea ceremonies.

•Even foreign vendors, such as Häagen Dazs, produces it (almost all vendors in east Asia do).

•Available in the US since the 1970’s, origonally only available in Asian restaurants/ markets, but is now more mainstream.
