EVENTS AFTER JAPAN400 PlYMOUTH

Contents Welcome to Japan400 Plymouth!

Join us in this celebration of two island nations on opposite sides of the world coming together in a moment of sharing, a history of exchange, and a future of friendship. The Japanese characters in our logo - ‘日英 [Nichi-Ei, Japan-England]’ - are designed by Britain-based Japanese master calligrapher Yukki Yaura. They graphically illustrate that Japan400 Plymouth is all about connections, between the UK and Japan. It is also about connections right here. The festivities taking place from 26 September to 1 October and beyond, are made possible because of the efforts of so many people coming together, devoting their talents and directing their interests to create something distinctive.

The little-known tale of John Saris, captain of The Clove, and his journey four-hundred years ago is an epic one. From his voyage around Africa to Yemen, through the Spice Islands to Japan to his encounter with Tokugawa leyasu, the most renowned of samurai warriors who pacified the great lords of the Mikado’s realm:

it exemplifies a vintage age of globalisation, when tall ships set sail from and returned to Plymouth. This is the story that Japan400 Plymouth invites you to share; and to continue to expand.

Six months ago, Plymouth, this city of some 250,000, was almost cut off from the rest of England due to the winter storms. But six months on, a tall ship will recreate - to the day - the homecoming of Saris to England on 27 September 1614 into Plymouth, the gateway of the world to England and of Britain to the world.

Japan might be geographically distant, but it is actually here, inspiring people in all that they do – in study, business, the arts, music and film, in what they eat, speak, wear, and in imagining the kind of world they would like to live in. Discover Japan, try it, explore it, savour it!

On behalf of the Japan400 Plymouth team, I convey our warmest wishes to you. We hope you enjoy Japan400 Plymouth.

お楽しみに!Dr. Jonathan D. Mackintosh lecturer in World History

Experience the full variety and joy of Japanese cuisine as Japan400 Plymouth blends the flavours of the East with the bounty of the South West.

While many are familiar with sushi and sukiyaki, recent years have seen the full breadth of Japanese cuisine appreciated globally – becoming known for its sumptuous flavours, entrancing traditions, exquisite designs, and its focus upon fresh, seasonal produce.

Seasonality sits at the heart of Japanese cuisine, with a core value being to make use of yama no sachi and umi no sachi - the ‘treasures of the mountains’ and the ‘treasures of the sea’.

While the South West may be a little short on mountains, there are few places in the United Kingdom that rival the region’s reputation for seafood.

Get a taste of how the bounty of the South West lends itself to Japanese cuisine by joining us to celebrate Japanese food and flavours.

All students across the South West are invited to fold one paper crane and send it to us. The crane is a symbol of good luck in Japan. When hundreds and thousands of paper cranes are folded (origami) and threaded together – the senbazuru – they symbolise the hopes of all the people that contributed to it, and the community coming together.

If you would like to participate, please email [email protected] for further details. We will provide you with an explanation of the senbazuru story, instructions on how to prepare and fold the paper, and directions on how to return the cranes. We will then assemble all the cranes we receive into one giant senbazuru sculpture.

We will celebrate this dramatic event by welcoming the arrival of an 112-foot historic sailing ship into Sutton Harbour. In addition, we will also highlight Plymouth’s special role in this adventure in a week-long programme of activities to showcase Anglo-Japanese history, culture, language, business, youth and food.

The inspiration for the Japan400 Plymouth came from the History subject team at Plymouth University. Over the last five years, the University has developed a research and teaching expertise of international standing in World History, including specialisations in modern Japan, the Indian Sub-continent, and pre-modern maritime exploration. It was a desire to share their passion for the history and culture of the Pacific region that encouraged the History team to spearhead the Japan400 events. It is an enthusiasm shared across the University. Japan400 Plymouth tangibly demonstrates the importance of Japan to academics in History, English, Architecture, Art and Design, Geography, Marine Science and Engineering, to name a few.

Above all Japan400 Plymouth is about engagement and partnership across the city, the South West region and internationally. Partners in the festival include Plymouth city council, regional businesses and industries, charities dealing with youth and socially disadvantaged groups, local community groups, academic and philanthropic organisations of international importance and national embassies. Japan400 Plymouth highlights the vision of Plymouth University to act as a gateway to the world, and its spirit to explore the new challenges that contact and exploration bring.

On behalf of the School of Humanities and Performing Arts, and the University, I invite you to enjoy the celebrations.

Dr. Elizabeth Tingle Head of School of Humanities and Performing Arts

A warm welcome to Japan400 Plymouth. In 1614, Plymouth witnessed the homecoming of the vessel The Clove, after its historic voyage to Japan which founded Anglo-Japanese trade relations and began a long history of interaction between the nations.

Japan400 Plymouth!

As British Ambassador in Tokyo, and a native of Plymouth, I am delighted to be able to support the Japan400 Plymouth project.little appreciated until this event, Plymouth and the South West have made important appearances in the story of Anglo-Japanese friendship since its beginning four centuries ago. As Japan400 Plymouth will demonstrate, they are poised to play an important role in the enhancement of this crucial relationship to the United Kingdom in the 21st century.

Initiated out of Plymouth University, the project promotes academic exchange and excellence, with special reference to the maritime world, its history, resources, and security.

It enhances regional inward investment to showcase the talent, expertise, and business opportunities which the South West has to offer.

A special focus on young people invites them to embrace their heritage of maritime exploration, a spirit which led to Anglo-Japanese contact four hundred years ago, and an inspiration to open a world of opportunity.

Most importantly, its aspiration to bring communities together in cultural sharing promises to generate a legacy of global curiosity and international friendship.

As a native of Devon, who knows and loves its moors, its people, and its coast, it is with special feeling that I wish this project great success. I hope that others will join me in embracing this opportunity and lending their support to Japan400 Plymouth.

Tim Hitchens HM Ambassador to Japan
