Prob le ms in vo lving fi nanci ng, whic h have fo rced some exporte rs to suspend activit ies , have a lso upset the industry , but seafood dea lers see s igns that loca l ba nkers are taking another look at the industry.
Fina ll y, the estab lis hment of the Marine Products Export Development Authority is seen as a move which may cause some in itial hardships , but which the industry fee ls wi ll have a long-range beneficia l impact on the country's shrimp exports.
OTHER EXPORTS
The canning and dried seafood s indu try a pparent ly suffered from severe setbacks in 1972, with exports dec lining . The dried fi sh and praw n industry were re portedl y the hardest hit. There were no exp la na tion s for the se setbacks . CSeafood Export Journ a l," Annu a l , January 1973 and other sources. )

' Editor 's Note The plural here IS an optimistic miSnomer, since we have only one letter But It deals with an Important tOpiC . We would like to use th,s space to print answers by NMFS speclails ts to fishery quest, ons of general Interest. If you have such a question , please address it to the Editor, Manne Fisheries ReView , Room 450. 1107 N E 45th St. Seattle. WA 98105 We reserve the right to ed It letters
to the overa ll budge t cutbacks exper ie nced by our Age ncy , as we ll as t he exp irat ion of t he FPC Act (PL-89-70 I , as ame nded) on June 30, 1972.
Plans are being deve loped to dispose of the Expe riment and Demo n s trat io n P lant in Aberdeen , Was hington , a nd the li mited quantit ies of product remaining from its operation. We are a lso c ur rently compi ling information so as to provide as comp lete a n information package as can be deve loped for anyone genera ll y interested in FPC or considering it s commercia l deve lopment. This wi ll make avai lab le a ll information generated by our activitie s over the past years, as well as a deta iled di scussion of the state-ofthe-art and a desc ription of the rema ining unreso lved prob lems. It s hould be avai la ble in 2-3 months.
Limited dome stic interest in F PC within the industry appea rs to be continuing, based upon our contacts, as well as the number of requests for sa mples of the product produced in Aberdeen. However, unti l the one pound packag ing restric ti on pre sently in the U .S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regul at ions is removed, the emergence ofa domestic industry is un like ly. A pet itio n to remove thi s re stric tion is presentl y be ing considered by FDA a nd a favo rab le di spo s ition is ex pec ted short ly.
Rega rding interna tiona l interest in FPC, I s uggest you write Dr. Ste ve R. Tannenbaum a t the following address and request a copy of the proceedings from an internationa l conference on FPC held in Cambridge in June 1972 .
