Council Reports:

ACT Council of ACT Motor Clubs 17 November 2015 monthly meeting

President advised that he attended a recent meeting of Australian Confederation

of Motor Clubs. At the meeting it was suggested that the modified vehicle

concession arrangements might be put in place about March next year.

Graham Gittins is back in the job as publicity officer for CACTMC. He is

proposing to put out regular Council Communiqués for member clubs and the

media outlining events which are in hand. Clubs were invited to provide details

of events to both Graham and the webmaster to keep everyone informed.

Marques in the Park attracted about 270 cars and about 50 motor bikes. This was

the biggest attendance to date and the day was rated a success by the organizers.

The major items on the agenda were those relating to future events. There has

been no official notice about Summernats next year. Notice has since been

received and an email message has been sent to STHARC members.

There will be a Shannons Cars n Coffee event at 255 Canberra Avenue Fyshwick

on 13 December from 9.00am onwards. This coincides with the STHARC

Christmas party.

Discussions are under way for a CRS recognition of historic trailers in the ACT.

The carrying capacity for trucks and trailers under the existing heritage

arrangements is limited to 2/3 of their rated capacity.

Consultations are under way for a Wings and Wheels event to be held in 2017 in

Page 5: January/February 2016 Issue 161...page 2 Southern Tablelands Heritage The Wheel # 161 Automotive Restorers Club, Inc PO Box 1420, Queanbeyan NSW 2620 President Malcolm Stewart 6299

conjunction with Canberra Airport. This event is likely to be held in October/

November 2017. At this stage there is no planning under way for Wheels in 2016.

It was decided that if no club or group of clubs comes forward to organize and run

Wheels in 2016 by the date of the January Council meeting, it will effectively be

too late to run the event and it will be cancelled. At this stage there is no proposed

site although east/west lawns of old parliament house and the open area at the end

of Hopetoun Circuit in Yarralumla are possibilities.

Planning for Terribly British Day is in hand. The date is 6 December and the

location is Weston Park Yarralumla. The site has good access and is a nice

environment capable of catering for several hundred vehicles. German Auto Fest is

scheduled for 18 September 2016, Italians on 3 April 2016 and Wheels if it

happens at all is most likely to be about 13 March.

Bush Council 1. Don Turvey, CHMC Registrar, did not seek re-election at the CHMC

Half Yearly Meeting. Jim Hatton from Cowra (Dinosaur Drivers Register) was elected

as the new Registrar.

2. The RMS Focus Group of which CHMC members Bill Waddell (RMS Liaison

Officer), Jim Hatton (Registrar), and Don Turvey (assisting) are participating in the

ongoing discussions and collaboration on the Classic 'MODIFIED' Vehicle Log Book

Trial. The Focus Group is requiring much effort and time for these Committee

members. The Trial is proposed to be introduced in early 2016.

3. STHARC Members are reminded that the 2016 CHMC Annual Rally will be held in

Temora over the Easter weekend 25 – 27 March 2016. Mark these dates in your 2016

diaries.

Terribly British Day 2015 from Lawrie Nock

6 December 2015 saw British cars once again invade Weston Park Yarralumla as

they first did 40 years ago. The return to Weston Park was not driven by

nostalgia but rather by necessity. Changes in the administration of National

Capital Authority managed parklands in the Parliamentary Triangle have made

the running of motor car events in this area too expensive for free to the public

activities.

An organizing committee comprising members from several of the British

marque clubs, CACMC and STHARC was involved in planning the event. The

ACT Government made available a large area adjacent to the model train in

Weston Park and car owners responded in substantial numbers to the new venue.

A total of more than 350 vehicles participated in TBD. Among the attendances

were several vehicles which have not been seen at this event previously.

The Aston Martins had a good roll up as part of a plan to promote the Bond cars.

The Lagonda club won a prize for its display and Rhonda Winnett’s Austin

Cambridge rated a special mention. It was surprising to see that so many Morris

Minors and Mini Minors have survived the ravages of time. Even more

impressive was the numbers of MG, Jaguar and Triumph vehicles. It is possible

that these vehicles are actually breeding because some were in such pristine

condition that it is difficult to accept that they were made 50 or more years ago.

Arrangements went pretty smoothly

with only a few minor problems. The

dust generated in the dry conditions

was a bit of a setback for owners who

had gone to a lot of trouble to present

their cars well. Those of us who did

not bother were not troubled by the

dust. The unprecedented roll up also

caused a few problems for the

organizers and car clubs. STHARC

members politely agreed to relocate to

allow CACMC more space after their

allocated site was invaded by another

activity. The cars were left in the hot

sun but it was convenient for STHARC

members to be

able to retire to

Attendance by members of the public

seemed to be a bit down on previous

years. This may have been due to the

relocation of the event. The publicity

for the event was sufficiently effective

that without any provocation or

indication of our involvement in

heritage motoring, a woman in a shop

in Hall who has no personal interest in

TBD, asked us on Saturday morning if

The convoy left the Guide Hall at around 8.20am. We picked up Jantje and Simon

with the Hot rod at Bungendore. We missed John K in Bungendore but we met up

with him in Braidwood. The Braidwood Motor Club put on an exceptional event to

coincide with the annual Airing of the Quilts.

There was a wide array of makes and models for members to view and discuss,

approx. 60 cars, 2 Fergies, (yes) <editor - steady Malcolm, steady!> ½ dozen motor

bikes and the ever popular stationary engines from Moruya.

The weather was glorious, warm with a slight cool breeze. The Lions Club steak &

sausage sizzle, the pie shop and ice cream shop did a roaring trade through the day.

The horse drawn cartridge tour of Braidwood was well supported as well. Those

interested took in the quilt displays, I didn’t count the quilts on display but there were

a lot hanging in the main street, not to mention those displayed in the old buildings of

Braidwood. There was a courtesy bus travelling between the venues that were

displaying quilts which was well

appreciated. There was a Markets

Day also in the park so, all in all,

enough to keep everyone happy.

Hazel and I are regular visitors to the

quilt show but if the Braidwood Motor

Club puts on an event next year I

would highly recommend it to

members as a wonderful day out.

The Christmas party was held at Burra Sports Ground on 13 December. About 70

members, friends and children attended.

The lunch was catered for by the club with a spectacular spread of meats, salads

and desserts. Once again, no-one left the party hungry because of lack of food.

With about 50 prizes to be won in the raffle there were many opportunities for

everyone to share in the prizes. Thanks to those members who provided prizes

for the raffle and lucky door prizes.

The best decorated car prize was won by David and Gill Buckley.

After lunch, Santa arrived in Polly the 1926 International truck and delivered

presents to the children present including David Buckley who received a Ford

book, and Jane presented Santa with a tin of

Holden motor cars or perhaps there may have

been biscuits in the tin.

Members were then subjected to a prolonged

bout of raffle prize draws and choosing prizes

from an outstanding selection. John and

Ronda Cornwell won the bone china tea set.

At the conclusion of festivities the hall was restored to pretty much the same

condition in which we found it earlier in the day.

Following the December meeting a new membership application was received. It

was circulated to the Committee members and agreed by the Committee that the

new member should be recommended to the membership at the next meeting.

With the agreement of the committee members present, an unscheduled monthly

meeting was held primarily to consider the new membership application.

Minutes of the Mid December monthly meeting of STHARC

The meeting commenced at about 1.00pm with Geoff Rudd Vice President in the

chair or on his feet in this case. Simon Braun was invited to introduce himself

and his interest in heritage motoring to the members present and did so. Members

voted overwhelmingly to accept Simon as a member of the club (note as of 15

Dec subscription paid). Geoff took the opportunity to inform members that Ian

STHARC was approached by the Jerrabomberra Public

School early November asking if any members

had a suitable vehicle and some spare time to bring Santa Clause to the Schools

Christmas Party for the Defence Force children on the 27 November 2015. Ron

Scattergood offered Polly and the Nocks the RR Corniche which would also have

been great. But after contacting Danielle the "Transition Aid" for the school, Max

De Oliver kindly offered "THE MOKE " and asked Danielle to check out our

STHARC website to view it.

She was more than pleased, said it is perfect, and commented how

good the website was. Job well done Malcolm!

Max was happy to pick up Santa to deliver him and all the presents to the school.

Both adults and children had great time,

especially the children. That’s Max in Le Très

Bon cute pixie hat next to Santa - could be the

next big style for STHARC! The school

showed its gratitude by giving Max and

STHARC certificates of appreciation.

Health Matters from Lawrie Nock

Some health issues have impacted on our friends:

1. The good news: Malcolm Stewart was admitted to Canberra Hospital at the same

time as Ian McLeish but has been cleared and is now out of hospital.

2. The not so good news: Early in December fellow member Ian McLeish fell onto the

concrete floor in his shed and banged his head. He recovered from the fall but the

following night ended up in hospital where he underwent surgery to relieve the

pressure on his brain. He recovered from the surgery but a full recovery is not likely

to be a speedy one. Krystyna is handling the pressure well with support from their

family and friends.

Bereavements

1. ELIZABETH BOYCE Many members who have been associated with the heritage

motoring movement in this region over the years know Barry Boyce and his wife

Elizabeth. Barry and Elizabeth are personal friends of many STHARC members and

have attended a number of STHARC events since STHARC was established. Early

in January Barry’s wife of 67 years, Elizabeth passed away. The club’s condolences

have been passed on to Barry and his family.

2. KENNETH JOHN McCAULEY Max De Oliver informs us he lost a good friend

John McCauley, who he brought to the car club meeting in Dec, and was going to

join up in the New Year with his FB Holden Ute and Holden HQ Sedan. He

suddenly passed away at the age of 44 on Boxing Day. Cherished partner of Diane.

Adored father of Ksann. Much loved son of Gwen and Ken (dec). A celebration of

John's life was held in St Raphael's Catholic Church, Lowe Street, Queanbeyan, on

Tues,12 January 2016.

W hat would early January be like in the ACT without steel blue, cloudless

skies, searing hot temperatures, and high horsepower, ear-splitting

decibels (I estimated 5.7 gajillabob dBa at least) with acrid tyre smoke, fumes,

fire, Shannons Goggomobil trying to crack the 10hp on the dyno, (again) and

…. Summernats? Sleepy Canberra, with no pollies and a depleted population

(oao the annual exodus to the coast) shakes off its fusty, frumpy, PC image

and does the hippy-hippy-shake-shake, & goes a little bit nuts for 4 days.

It’s allegedly Australia's biggest pony power party where over 2000 “street

machines” (saw quite a few dragsters, and any number of machines that would

NOT be allowed on public roads unless on a trailer or flat-top!) roll into Canberra.

They came from around Australia; a few from overseas to show off to more than

100,000 spectators.

All doing our bit for global warming.

Summernats 29 was an over-the-top, screaming frenzy. Hoons Ville On A Stick.

Bitta fun eh? But the last day is family day when the car clubs are invited to

display in the main arena with free entry. A huge variety came along from an

early 20s Ford Model A “Woody” to the Ford FPV club with its huge marquees.

Representing STHARC at the bedlam were David Buckley (1940 Mercury Eight

“Lady”) Paul Anderson and 3 guests (1971 Hunter Royal), Keith Bateman (1978

Datsun 200B “Cassie”), and John Thomas (EH Holden) (text and photos David

Buckley, Goggo and flames from “Alistairway to Heaven”, & Paul Anderson)

John Cornwell’s

father had owned both

an FX and FJ Holden

utes. Then John and Ronda came to own a 1955 FJ Holden Business Sedan in

1983 when an elderly aunty of John’s workmate had it up for sale after owning it

quiet a few years, but it needed complete resto. So John completely stripped the

car and the paintwork back to the raw metal. Surprise, surprise – he found only a

few minor dents and no rust at all. It was then repainted in the original colour:

paint number 253-16209, Lithgow cream; while the interior upholstery was

completed by a family friend.

Then the Gunna family came to stay for a while: Gunna do this, Gunna do that; so

the FJ stayed like that until Melanie, John and Ronda’s daughter, asked if she

could use the car for her wedding in 1992. That ended the Gunnas and John got

stuck in again to complete a full front clip off to overhaul of the front-end, brakes

and a tune-up of the engine. Not much work was need before it was ready for

rego and it passed the roadworthy inspection with flying colours for full

registration. It was given licence plate “FJ755”. Needless to say Melanie daughter

looked beautiful in the car her father had restored and John and Ronda were as

pleased and as proud of their daughter as of the FJ!

Some of the technical features that distinguish John and Ronda’s FJ Business

sedan (Style FJ 217, Body - Sydney 2783; Sub-Frame: 5-11-560-Sydney; built: 7

month, 1955) are: Rubber mats, front and back. Painted seat base rear. Heavy

Duty Springs. Taxi Bar mounted Pillar to Pillar across the rear of the front seat. Door

pulls on all four doors. Two light switches for interior light. The interior light has a

switch on it as well as the right hand centre door pillar.

T his is a very large, USA-made classic tractor and very rare in Australia. All

the original red tractors were recalled, and the rebuilt tractors were blue. You

can see the red just behind the blue

paint where it’s been chipped!

Henry Ford had a personal interest in

“providing an affordable tractor to the

small farmer” (actually the farmers

were normal height but the farms were

small!!!), Henry Ford and Harry

Ferguson agreed to build tractors with

the Ferguson system, leading to the famous Ford N-Series tractors. Then Ford

purchased New-Holland in 1985. In 1991, Ford-New Holland was sold to

FIAT. So it’s interesting to see a Fiat tractor pulling a Ford tractor apart!

Hugh Spencer with John Corbett had a most pleasing day recently ‘demolishing’

KIT. The careful and considered

mayhem required careful

application of brute force via the

Fiat tractor to remove the VERY

LARGE (head high to John) and

HEAVY cast nose of the Ford.

Now Hugh can access the

steering gear and hydraulics to

fix them properly!

This Moto Guzzi Grillo And Its Garage Are Perfectly Preserved

Website reviewed www.petrolicious.com - fantastic photos and story with photography by

Federico Bajetti, features Bruno Borghi, with his father’s 1932 race spec Moto Guzzi 250-cc.

"Want to hear the ‘Grillo’? Give me a good push, c'mon you, let's go!" I pushed him through

the gravel of the old courtyard until the distinctive "thump-thump" of the horizontal single

echoed on the century old walls surrounding the garage. "The redline is 4500 rpm!"

screamed Bruno: still, the bike was really loud. The level of decibels drastically increased

when he jumped on the bike,

engaged first gear, and gave the

old girl the berries. It's natural

to fall in love with these old

motorcycles. For the full story go
