ALLEN TOUSSAINT

Legendary New Orleans musician and composer Allen Toussaint, who penned such clas-sics as “Working in a Coal Mine” and “Lady Marmalade” as a behind-the-scenes songwriter and producer before he gained new fame as a performer, died Novem-ber 10, 2015 after suffering a heart attack, not long after a performance in Madrid, Spain. He was 77. A prolific pianist, compos-er, and producer (he produced Dr. John’s 1973 hit “Right Place, Wrong Time”), Mr. Toussaint was in-ducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2012. He is also a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, and he received the National Medal of Arts from President Obama in 2013. Toussaint’s influence could be felt far outside of R&B circles. The song “Southern Nights,” which Toussaint wrote and performed, was later covered by country star Glen Campbell and hip-hop artists in the ‘80s and ‘90s often sampled from his songs. He eventually began per-forming more and producing his own albums in the 1970s. Onstage he often wore sequined and color-ful suits and even off the stage he was known as a snazzy dresser — albeit one who often wore sandals. He drove a Rolls Royce but oth-erwise lived a modest life in New Orleans.

Toussaint had been ex-pected to perform a benefit concert along with longtime friend Paul Simon in New Orleans on Dec. 8 at Le Petit Theatre to raise money for New Orleans Artists Against Hun-ger And Homelessness. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 flooded not only his home but also his Sea-Saint studio, forcing Toussaint to flee to New York. The studio never reopened. During Katrina he also lost most of his manuscripts, his gold records and many of his stage outfits. In New York, Toussaint fo-cused largely on performing, often taking the stage in solo concerts at Joe’s Pub on Lafayette Street. Irma Thomas said Toussaint didn’t do much touring before Katrina but after the storm he felt he needed to tour and bring attention to the city and its music.

I went to my first Natchel’ Blues Network Christmas Party at the old Ship’s Cabin this year as I finally joined NBN after attending events for over 10 years. I must say there were enough complimentary CDs there to cover several decades worth of membership alone. The food was great, the company was better, and the live blues jams were excellent, as some of my favorite local musicians shared their vocal and instrumental talents with all who would listen. One guy even had a suitcase full of harmonicas and played several of them alternatively during songs. A great time was had by all, and I urge all of you to join this organization and help Keep the Blues Alive in Tidewater. —Anonymous

Every now and then, you come

across a real talent that is right out-of-

of-the-gate, fresh and got that spark

that is unique and what everyone has

been waiting for. Eddie Cotton seems

to meet that mark. To start, Eddie

Cotton won the 2015 International

Blues Challenge. Not a bad start. He

was born in Clinton, Mississippi, a

minister’s son. Eddie grew up singing

and playing gospel music at church

and playing gospel music. Still, not

a bad start. He eventually moved

his sound to Willie Mitchell’s Royal

Studios in Memphis and the equally

renowned Malaco Studios in Jackson,

MS, near Eddie’s hometown of Clin-

ton. That’s where we hear him now.

Not a bad note now.

Eddie’s sound is influenced,

in my opinion, by the Chicago and

Philadelphia blues genres. This is

apparent in the use of his horns, B3

and guitar arrangements. And, man,

do they smoke. I can see why he won

the IBC gig! Wish I could have been

tune with Rob just tearing up that

harp! The next cut is a classic -- “Lilly

Mae” by Calvin Frazier, with famous

session player Aki Kumar on harp

this time. Ryan drives a mean bass

line for some great Chicago blues at

its best! That’s followed by another

classic, made famous by Freddie King

-- “Lonesome Whistle Blues” features

Aki kicking some great harp and

James working the guitar and vocals.

Another classic on this release the boys

handle extremely well is Robert C.

Smith’s “Don’t Drive Me Away.” It’s

nice, steady-rollin’ beat handled by

June Core on the skins and some nice

riffs by Chris James make this a top

pick on my list from the ten tunes on

the CD. “Hard To Keep A Dollar” is a

hard-hitting Chicago tune with Kumar

on harp and a great story line as well.

The last cut on the CD is Sun-

nyland Slim’s classic “Roll, Stumble,

and Slip.” This cut lays down a bad-A

bass beat by Patrick and swings with a

jump flavor. The whole band gets into

the groove and makes this a fantastic

wrap-up to an incredible blues CD.

This is one you can play all the way

through and enjoy each track in its

own right. There’s not a bad cut on the

entire CD. This is one of the best blues

releases of the year! Pick this one up

for your collection. You’re gonna love

this one.

I’m a big fan of old-school Chi-

cago blues. These days, when going

through the CDs that we get in for

review, we get to hear a lot of different

interpretations of what “blues music”

means to these various artists. These

variations run the gamut of many

musical styles. Many some would not

label as blues music. Well, my friends,

this is not the case with Chris James

and Patrick Rynn’s latest release,

Trouble Don’t Last. This CD is true-to-

heart, old school Chicago blues, for the

most part. They do vary their styles on

a few cuts, just to keep things interest-

ing and showing off their proficiency

with their writing and musical abili-

ties.

They start the CD rolling with

“Shameless.” The band is set up with

Chris James on guitar and lead vocal,

Rynn on bass, Rob Stone on harp and

June Core on drums. This is a jumpin’

CD Reviewsthere! But, I’m lucky to have the abil-

ity to listen to this CD! You can, too.

The CD starts out with the title

track, “One at a Time,” a kickin’

guitar number with a bad a-bass

line. The new cut is “Be Careful,” an

up-tempo cut with a great harp line.

“Better Deal” gives the band a chance

to get into a nice, slow groove and let

them show off some talent in their

areas of instruments. Really nice and

one of my top picks off the release!

Another top pick is “Dead End

Street,” with some great horn, B3 and

some mean harp work! “Fair Weather

Lover” is a great Chicago-blues style

winner. “Filling Me With Pleasure”

is a funky lil’ blues number! “Je Ne

Sais Quoi” has a toe-tappin’ beat that

defies you to sit still in your seat or

keep your feet on the floor! Dance

baby, dance! The CD follows that

with “Mississippi,” another dance,

swingin’ tune. “My Money” brings in

the Philadelphia sound! And the CD

ends with “War is Over,” a commen-

tary on current themes and tones, all

set to a killer Chicago blues beat.

If you want a really great blues

CD by a true winner of an interna-

tional blues competition and you are

in for over an hour of some really

great blues music, put this one in

your blues collection! You will thank

me for it!

MEMPHIS, TN – The Blues Foundation will honor 15 indi-viduals and organizations with its 2016 Keeping the Blues Alive Awards during a recognition luncheon Friday, January 29, 2016, at the Doubletree Hotel in downtown Memphis, Tennessee. Each year, The Blues Foundation presents the KBA Awards to individuals and organizations that have made sig-nificant contributions to blues music. The KBA ceremony will be held in conjunction with the 32nd International Blues Chal-lenge, which begins January 27 and features the final rounds of the world’s largest and most prestigious blues music com-petition, as well as seminars, showcases, and receptions for blues societies, fans, and professionals.

THE JIMMYS Hot Dish Brown Cow Productions BCP 003 www.thejimmys.net A hot toe-tapper from Wis-consin…what did I just say? Yes … that’s right! Powerful vocals and tight horns make this a great CD to throw in for your next party to get the crowd out of their chairs and on to the dance floor. In “I Wonder,” they contemplate a man’s woman squan-dering all of his money and his love while she is up to no good. Seems so many blues songs revolve around cheating partners, but we never get tired of hearing new renditions on the take. In “Jacqui Juice” they put the mental in instrumental in a way that is so smooth it would even have Mrs. O’Daniel hitting the cup. “Funk Schway” leads the CD into a differ-ent realm as they pop a little bass and make you think Rollo is going to be dropping by with Grady and some wild parsley. Hope Hoppy and Smitty don’t show up for a salad, but if they do put this Funky Jam on and set the cruise control.

LITTLE BOYS BLUE Bad Love Jaxon Records www.jaxonrecords.com For a band that has previously put out records under the Sleepyville label, it looks like the beast has awoken. Great vocals and grooving harmonica make this CD one for your collection. These boys throw down the Delta Boogie Blues like nobody’s business. In “Howling for You,” JD Taylor hits up the mouth organ and lets his woman know he is looking for her. In “Aint No Use In Cryin’,” he tells his girl she is busted for cheating in a tune that lays a wallopin’ on the woman with the mouth organ. I bet she can barely stand up after that one. At least he can save some money on the roses and chocolates on February 14th.

THE REVEREND SHAWN AMOS The Reverend Shawn Amos Loves You Put Together Records www.shawnamos.com Don’t let the title fool you, this Reverend isn’t preaching from your typical good book. More like Amos 3:16! In “Your Gonna Miss Me (When I Get Home)” Amos tells his woman he is not going out any more … so she will have to tell her side-man not to come around. He exclaims, “I’m gonna take my good thing back!” I like that line. In “The Outlaw” Amos slows down in a cruising tune that would be good on a dusty road with the windows down, no A/C, sweat dripping down your neck, and only a half bottle of tequila in your glove-box. In “Hollywood Blues” he gets the head to bobbin’ with a good horn set and his expressive vocals. Pop the Rev in on Sunday, but wait till after Sunday School.

JJ APPLETON & JASON RICCI Dirty Memory Old Boy Network www.jjappleton.com Appleton and Ricci go back to the traditional Piedmont blues with this one as they match harmonica and gui-tar in the old school style. This acous-tic offering does not fail to impress as Appleton’s prowess on the resonator guitar is matched by Ricci’s handsome harmonica work. In “Nobody’s Fault but Mine” they give a twangy twist to an old favorite. In “Jason Solo,” Ricci gives you that old “Train Train“ har-monica blowout that chugs right along and will have you calling Amtrak before the song is over. This CD offers a modern take on covers of traditional blues songs. Accomplished musicians in their own right, this collaboration of Appleton and Ricci will have you chilling with their hauntingly good pairing. I Have A Dream that they keep making music together!

LUTHER ALLISON Power Wire Blues Rumble Records RR-1004 www.luther-allison.com Luther Allison, Live, 1979. Do I even have to say anything else? I got this rare gem off of eBay for a pittance early in my journey into the Blues. Hoping to impress The Artist Formerly Known as Blues Boy (TAFKABB), I broke this out and even he, the consummate Luther fan, had never heard of it. The LP has evidence of heavy play as numerous dates are scribbled onto the cover and the name WEFT… a listener-supported community radio station in

Champaign, Illinois. The cover boasts a great illustration of Luther with a NAMA shirt and plugged into the power lines, but more like he is supplying them energy. Luther’s unmistakable Robert Johnson covers are represent-ed, like “Sweet Home Chicago” and “Dust My Broom” in all the classic Luther glory, as is “I Got Wor-ries,” “You Don’t Love Me,” “Going Down,” and “I’m Gonna Leave You Alone.” Ahh, to be experiencing Luther Allison live in Chicago in 1979 on his home turf. This LP will take you there. Kenny Arnold, Mike Allen, Kenny Bergdoll, and Sid Wingfield round out this LP. But Luther could probably have played with his broom as backup and still made it sound fabulous. No disrespect to those guys. But we are talking Luther here. So plug this Power Wire in for your sweetheart and save some money on those AA’s.

THE WILDCAT O’HALLORAN BAND Midnight Service Call Doves Nest Records www.wildcatohalloran.com The funny cover on this CD made me feel like this was something I needed. And before the first song was halfway done, I knew I was right. This CD has everything I need in a Blues CD … great harmonica, funky guitar, and lyrics that will crack you up. When he sings of “Double-dating down at the Deevorce court” he tells a hilarious tale of having a joint divorce with his neighbor’s wife, who he has been visiting a bit too often. In the title-track (who remembers title-tracks?), Wildcat laments having to perform repairs at the homes of the needy women in town whose systems haven’t been serviced properly. In “97%” he makes a statement on the current state of The Blues and has some advice for those who are faking the funk. Give this CD to your loved one this Valentine’s Day and watch that radiator heat up! Just don’t play Chicken Shack.
