The VirtuesPART II: THE HuMAN VIRTuES

The First Cardinal Virtue: PRUDENCEPRUDENCE is the virtue that disposes practical reason to discern our true good in everycircumstance, and to choose the right means of achieving it. Prudence is “right reason inaction,” writes St. Thomas Aquinas, following Aristotle. It is not to be confused withtimidity or fear, nor with duplicity or dissimulation. It is called auriga virtutem (thecharioteer of the virtues); it guides the other virtues by setting rule and measure. It isprudence that immediately guides the judgment of conscience. The prudent mandetermines and directs his conduct in accordance with this judgment. With the help ofthis virtue we apply moral principles to particular cases without error and overcomedoubts about the good to achieve and the evil to avoid.

In The Four Cardinal Virtues, Josef Pieper writes, “That is prudent which is in keepingwith reality.” Moral principles and good intentions amount to little if pursued blindly.Action on behalf of the good requires accurate perception of concrete situations andcircumstances.

Pieper identifıes two causes of imprudence. One is thoughtlessness. Sometimesthoughtlessness arises from indifference or impatience, but it can also follow from amentality that presumes to know in advance what to do. How many times have we seensomeone say something true but unkind? It’s easy to imagine a justifıcation that appealsto principle: “We have an obligation to speak the truth!” Prudence does not contradictthis principle, but it knows when, and how, to say hard truths. The prudent man says theright thing in the best way, or holds his tongue.

Another cause of imprudence is irresoluteness. We often face situations that require usto act quickly. Irresoluteness can take the guise of moral rectitude. A seminar-roommentality of ongoing debate can bemorally debilitating.Wemay be tempted toweigh thecircumstances, get advice and consult experts so that we can reassure ourselves that ouractions are irreproachable. We cover our indecision with the garb of moral seriousness:“It would be irresponsible to act without further inquiry and consultation.” Prudenceoperates differently. The prudent man knows he cannot enjoy the luxury of certainty. The virtue of prudence draws on powers of judgment, not on proofs.

Prudence is the fırst of the cardinal virtues because, without it, the others--justice,fortitude and temperance--lack proper direction. Don Quixote is comical, not brave, because he lacks an accurate grasp of reality. This fundamental role of prudence in theexercise of all the virtues explains why St. Augustine said that the virtues of the paganRomans were but glorious vices. Christ reveals the actual shape of human reality.Without this knowledge, we can be cagey, perhaps even wise in a worldly sense. Yetwithout revelation, we cannot be truly prudent. In Christ we see clearly that theprincipalities and powers rule this world and must be opposed. But the prudent man cannever act as though sin and death had the fınal word. Their loyalty to Christ andinsouciance toward death accord with reality. As many preachers have observed, “He isno fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.”

SPIRITuAL ADOPTION PROGRAMAT OuR LADY OF LOuRDES PARISH(PRAYERS BEGIN FEBRuARY 2)

Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby. As an expression of that love, Our Lady ofLourdes parish announces an adoption program for young and old alike.

The members of Our Lady of Lourdes parish family will have the opportunity on the Feast of thePresentation (February 2) to “spiritually” adopt a child who is newly conceived this month. Not allnewly conceived babies are allowed to be born. In fact, more than 4,000 babies lose their lives toabortion each day. It is these babies you are being asked to “adopt”.

You may “adopt” a child individually or as a family by fılling out one of the cards below and placingit on your refrigerator or a special place to remind you and/or your family to pray for your adopted baby. You will have the opportunity to name the child for whom you will be praying, thereby giving the babythe humanity he or she deserves. You will be asked to pray for your unborn child and for all unbornchildren, for the power of prayer is great.

You will receive monthly messages through the parish bulletin describing your baby’s developmentand your child will be born in November 2020.

St. Thomas Aquinas—January 28—Priest&Doctor of the Church

The Angelic Doctor; the Great Synthesizer; the Dumb OxA great and quiet intellect, a teacher, and a

Dominican friar. St. Thomas Aquinas is known for hiswritten works, in which he synthesized Aristotelianphilosophywith theprinciples ofChristianity. He is alsoknown for his Eucharistic hymns, which include Pangelingua, the last twoverses ofwhich comprise theTantumergo, which is sung or recited during the veneration andbenediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

During his studies, St. Thomas Aquinas wasnicknamed by his peers ‘the DumbOx’, both because ofhis size and the fact that he was slow in speech. Yet histeacher, St. Albert, noted of him, “We call this man adumb ox, but his bellowing in doctrine will one dayresound throughout theworld.”

St. Thomas Aquinas is the patron of students, schools, learning, book sellers, scholars andtheologians.

Wemust love them both, those whose opinions we share andthose whose opinions we reject, for both have labored in thesearch for truth, and both have helped us in finding it.

— ST. THOMASAQuINAS

St. John Bosco—January 31—PriestTeacher of YouthSon ofVenerableMargaret Bosco. John’s father diedwhen the boywas two years old; and as

soon as hewas old enough to do odd jobs, he did so to helpsupport his family. Hewould go to circuses, fairs andcarnivals, practice the tricks that he sawmagicians perform, and then put on one-boy shows. After his performance, whilehe still had an audience of boys, hewould repeat the homilyhe had heard earlier that day in church.

Heworked as a tailor, baker, shoemaker and carpenterwhile attending college and seminary. As a teacher, heworked constantlywith young people; hewrote shorttreatises aimed at explaining the faith to children, and thentaught themhow to print them. Friend of St. Joseph Cafasso, whose biography hewrote, and confessor to Blessed JosephAllamano. He is the patron of apprentices, editors, youth, laborers and performers.

Fly from bad companions as from the bite of a poisonoussnake. If you keep good companions, I can assure you that youwill one day rejoice with the blessed inHeaven; whereas if youkeep with those who are bad, you will become bad yourself, and youwill be in danger of losing your soul. - ST. JOHNBOSCO
