Charlotte Williams, granddaughter of Craig and Debbie Babb, and Charlotte’s parents, Amanda and Kory Williams. Don Barta and Irmajean as Don recovers from a broken ankle. Emily Box as it she grows stronger at Kingswood Manor. For those who grieve the loss of loved ones. Todd and Julie Hendry and their family while they are on furlough from their missionary assignment in Brazil. Heartland Camp staff as they prepare to welcome campers. The snow has melted and the playground is visible! YAY!! The children are loving being outside even for just short amounts of time! During February we enjoyed JoHo the story teller visiting our school to teach us about arctic animals. The kids loved the stories! We will hold Chapel in the coming weeks and share the story of how Jesus calms the storm. Enrollment for the 2014-2015 school year has taken place and we are happy to report that the preschool will be full of 100 sweet little friendly faces next year. The preschool will be on spring break from March 17-21. When we return, the children will enjoy the start of the embryology project and hatching baby chicks. Peter responded boldly: “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” (Matthew 26:35) Yet, Peter does deny knowing Jesus three times during the trial that led to Jesus’ crucifixion. When Jesus shows up alive after his death, Peter is ashamed. In John 21, the resurrected Lord asks Peter a penetrating question, not just once, but three times: “Do you love me?” Peter’s response to this question is quite different from the bold statement he made just days earlier. Peter squirms under the weight of the question, having been greatly humbled by his denial of the Lord. Peter’s story points to something that is true of all of us. We are all on a journey with Jesus, a journey in which we find that we have a lot to learn about what love really means. True love for God never simply declares itself; it is also worked out in our daily living with God and others. True love for God requires a humble and listening posture before God. We listen to God through God’s Word. The author of Hebrews writes this about God’s Word: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” When we encounter God in God’s Word it can be uncomforta- ble, even painful. Oswald Chambers in his devotional My Utmost For His Highest, writes: “Unless we are experiencing the hurt of facing every deception about ourselves, we have hindered the work of the Word of God in our lives. The Word of God inflicts hurt on us more than sin ever could, because sin dulls our senses.” During this Lenten season, we will prepare ourselves to receive the gift of Christ’s cross as God’s gracious gift for our salvation. Let’s allow God’s Word to penetrate our hearts so that we, like Peter, can say, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” With you in Christ’s service, Pastor Connie

Reflections from Pastor Connie
Dear Ward Parkway Presbyterian friends and family, You may remember that before his crucifixion, Jesus told Peter that Peter would deny him three times. Peter responded boldly: “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” (Matthew 26:35) Yet, Peter does deny knowing Jesus three times during the trial that led to Jesus’ crucifixion. When Jesus shows up alive after his death, Peter is ashamed. I wrote the above for Peter Perme’s memory
book, when he left his position at Ward Parkway
Presbyterian Church. I share it now in honor and
thanksgiving for Peter’s service. And as we move into
the season of Lent, perhaps these words will inspire
us to open our hearts and humbly receive God’s
blessings, and use them wisely, for His sake. May
our prayer be that through Jesus’ great sacrifice,
God will polish our souls.

NEW Online Self-Study Opportunity Christian Education is offering a NEW Opportunity for Online-Self Study of 1
Corinthians beginning April 5th, 2014. The study is authored by Dr. Ralph Wilson. In this study, the Apostle Paul tackles the question, "How can the
church be authentic in the midst of a pagan culture with sharply contrasting values?" This letter to the Church at Corinth is mostly devoted to correcting
church life to conform to a gospel of love and repentance. If you would like to participate in this

Ash Wednesday Service on March 5 at
6:30 p.m. Please join us for a service of somber
remembrance of our deep need for the mercy and grace of God given
in Jesus Christ. This brief service concludes with the imposition of
ashes on our foreheads, a reminder that we fol-low the crucified one
who brings us new life through his own death.
Who Is This Man?
“The Unpredictable Impact of the Inescapable
Jesus” A five week study on Sundays at
5:00 in the Parlor, beginning March 9 Pastor Connie and Karen and Pat Wiederaenders
will lead a five week study during Lent based on John Ortberg’s book, Who Is This Man? On
Sunday evenings from 5-6:30pm we will explore
how Jesus continues to influence our world. From the Dark Ages to the present day, Jesus is the man
who won't go away. Group discussion guides will be available for $7. Questions? Call Connie at the
church. Child care will be provided.
Summer Camp
Michael Megraw, Director of Heartland Camp will be with us in
worship on March 9!
Our Camp in Parkville exists to build relationships and impact lives in a
Christ-centered environment. Here at Ward Parkway Presbyterian Church we
believe that Christian camps are uniquely capable of affecting lives for Jesus Christ. A camp experience at Heartland can serve as one of the most powerful and life-changing
experiences in our children’s faith development. Heartland Camp counselors invest in our children and model what it means to live life for the Lord. At camp, children build relationships with Jesus
Christ, counselors and new friends while experiencing great outdoor activities. Details, descriptions and registration

January Session Meeting
Elder Cottrell introduced a program sponsored by Heartland Presbytery to collect empty prescription bottles to be sent to Kenya for use by the Presbyteri-an hospital facility in Thwake Village. Session decided to make this opportunity available to the congregation. The amount of the 2013 Joy Gift offering was $463.46. Thanks to all who contributed! Session approved use of our Fellowship Hall for a meeting of the Heartland Presbytery Acts 16:5 Initiative churches on April 5. New officer training will be conducted on Saturday, February 1 and examination of these new officers will be on February 9 before worship. Fellowship: Elder Crossette reported on November’s Hanging of the Greens by the youth, the Chili Cook-off and the reception after the choir’s Christmas Cantata. These events were enjoyed by all. The Fellowship team is planning to make available tickets to the stage performance of C. S. Lewis’s The Great Divorce on February 1. On Sunday, February 2, the church will enjoy a Super Bowl meal, featuring soups and Super Bowl side dishes. Elder Crossette is interested in improving signage around our building and investigating the opportunity for hosting a “little free library” on our grounds. Personnel: Elder Nelson reported that the personnel committee will finish staff performance reviews soon. Mission and Stewardship: Elder Durig reported that our missionaries in Brazil, Todd and Julie Hendry, will be on furlough during 2014 and we will invite them to a Sunday worship service this year. Worship: Elder Justus reported that the Worship Council is making plans for Lent and Easter. We thank Elder Steve Guthrie for his six years of service as a Ruling Elder.
