AN UPDATE ON THE COMINGS AND GOINGS OF NUBC

Welcome back, hope everyone

enjoyed their break and were spoilt

rotten by dear old Santa. It’s time

now to get excited for this New

Year: the upcoming regattas, the

beginning of a new semester and

our novice intake. The break was an

eventful time for the club with a day

trip to Nelson Bay and achieving

some great results at the Taree

Summer Regatta.

DAY AT THE BAY

The NUBC annual ‘day at the bay’ was

held late last year on Saturday 15th

December. The mini road trip pulled into

Shoal Bay where the light clouds did little

to prevent our members from diving into

the

the beautiful waters and starting up a

game of beach volleyball. Then due to

a slightly worrying addiction to

exercise and a club tradition we

walked up Mount Tomaree where we

were greeted with spectacular views

of Port Stephans, as well as sore calf

muscles. Our child at heart came out

to play, with a swim at Fingal Bay and

attempt to use the kids play

equipment. On the trip home we made

a stop at Murray’s Brewery, an

absolute necessity, where we were

able to sample some delicious local

brews. Such a fabulous day thanks to

everyone who turned up and made it

so fun.

TAREE SUMMER REGATTA

NUBC had a huge weekend over the 18th,

19th and 20th of January at the Taree

Summer Regatta on the Manning River. In

most events that we entered our athletes

were to be seen in the top 3 placings, a

remarkable effort especially for our novice

rowers. Our longstanding relationship

with the politically incorrect black boy

tree motel continued, but after the

extreme heat that caused many races on

the Friday to be cancelled the motel’s pool

was rarely used over the weekend as a

greatly appreciated cool change came

through.

Racing highlights over the weekend

included; third and second place for our D

grade men’s doubles: Kevin Shaw Taylor

and Aaron McGowan, and Matt Rimington

and Ken Boldery respectively. Bethany

Kapira and Conrad Bond both scored a

second place in the women’s and men’s B

grade single sculls. An awesome second

place was taken by Georgina Shafran and

Emily Wade in the women’s D grade

double scull. Jason Nissen took out

first place in a composite eight with

Endeavour in the men’s masters division.

Bethany Kapira along with her Penrith

composite crew took first place in the

women’s masters quad scull.

Our men’s D grade quad of Chris Maytom, Matt Rimington, Kevin Shaw-Taylor and Ken Boldery scored first place in an exciting finish. Following this achievement James Elliot and Damon Mills took out first place in the men’s C grade pair, beating the chasing crew from Glebe by two seconds. Jack Hanley fought for second place in the men’s lightweight single, coming second by 14 seconds to Dean Robinson, of Sydney, and beating friendly rival James Waldersee, of Balmain, by two seconds. All three athletes are trialing for the State lightweight four to compete at the 2013 National Championships. A second place by 14 seconds to Sydney rowing club was also achieved by our women’s B grade quad scull: Erin Gardiner, Pru Dwyer, Merran Holmes and Jessica Richardson. Also achieving seconds were our women’s open four and our men’s D four, congratulations to Bronwyn Flowers, Caroline Geoghegan, Maddy Dupont and Erin Gardiner, and Aaron McGowan, Ken Boldery, Anthony Mujic and Tom Marshall. Both our men’s D and B grade eights performed competitively achieving second places. Chris Maytom and Jack Hanley took out first place in the men’s lightweight double scull and taking out an eight second margin over second place. Finishing up the day our women’s fours took out first and third

place in the C grade coxed four division with Prudence Dwyer, Merran Holmes, Maddy Dupont and Erin Gardiner taking home the gold. It was a great weekend and congratulations to all our athletes on such a mighty effort

NSW INTERSTATE TEAM TRIALS On Sunday the 3rd of January Jack Hanley and Jessica Richardson will trial for their place in the NSW Team to Represent the state at the 2013 Australian Championships. GOOD LUCK and BEST WISHES from NUBC!!
