Year for Priests

During this Year for the Priest, we will be sharing stories of some of the priests and seminarians from the Arch-diocese of Hartford. We ask that you keep all of our priests in your prayers in a special way.

Year for Priests June 19, 2009 - June 19, 2010

We thank you, God our Father, for those who have responded to your call to priestly ministry. Accept the sure knowledge of your love. Open their hearts to the

power and consolation of the Holy Spirit. Lead them to new depths of union with your Son. Increase in them profound faith in the Sacraments they celebrate as they nourish, strengthen and heal us.

Lord Jesus Christ, grant that these, your priests, may inspire us to strive for holi-ness by the power of their example, as men of prayer who ponder your word and follow your will.

O Mary, Mother of Christ and our mother, guard with your maternal care these chosen ones, so dear to the Heart of your Son. Intercede for our priests that, offering the Sacrifice of your Son, they may be conformed more each day to the image of your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

St. John Vianney, universal patron of priests, pray for us and our priests.

Father Robert Beloin

From my earliest childhood I was in awe at the ministry of the priest as an important part of people’s lives as he helped them find God. My parents at-tended Mass every morning and I was encouraged to be an altar server in the

fourth grade. I loved it. After graduating from high school, I attended St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield and con-tinued at Our Lady of Angels Seminary in Albany. When it closed, I finished my prepa-ration for the priesthood at the American Col-lege in Louvain, a short distance from Brus-sels. That experience was transformational. Attending lectures of professors whose books I had read in Albany greatly inspired me in the study of theology that has remained a life-long passion. Living in the heart of Europe was an expansive experience. Following ordi-nation in 1973 in my home parish of St. Mar-garet Church in Madison, I was assigned to St. Ann Church in New Britain. I then returned to the American College as Director of Pas-toral Formation and completed my Ph.D. during that five year term. I returned to the Archdiocese and was appointed a co-pastor at St. Barnabas Church in North Haven where I remained for ten years. The context of my ministry completely changed when I was assigned to Yale’s cam-pus fifteen years ago. I had no particular in-terest in campus ministry but when I came here I started to wonder ‘what could a Catho-lic center be like at one of the great universi-ties of the world?’ I gradually came to realize that in addition to a dynamic ministry engag-ing very bright undergraduate and graduate students as well as gifted faculty, a great re-source could be found in the Catholic alumni who could bring their experience and financial resources to expanding a Catholic ministry at Yale. Years ago, a friend advised me to “follow the vibrancy” and I have found a great vibrancy in campus ministry. Helping students and faculty see the relevance of Catholic faith to their personal lives and how to bring their faith to inform their decisions is a constant focus and challenge. Promoting a rigorous Catholic intellectual life at the level of university dis-course is an exciting opportunity. It is a privi-lege to minister here and one that I cherish.

Wise Men Vs. Wise Guys

Over the years, the men in the Gospel for the Feast of The Epiphany have been called by different names. Some have called them Magi, others astrologers, still others Kings. For my purposes, I will cal them Wise Men.

What does it take to be wise? What accounts for true wis-dom? Can true wisdom be equated with being intellectual? Perhaps not. I know many people who have studied for many years and have a great deal of book knowledge but do not have common sense. I am sure that you also know people who have advanced university degrees but do not have ordinary wisdom.

Where does wisdom come from? Is it based on life’s ex-periences? Can you learn it from other people? These are good questions.

What is the difference between wise people and wise guys?

Here are some of my observations. Wise people set out to learn things. Wise guys seem to know it all.

Some time ago I was watching a CNN news program as newscasters made their observations about what went wrong in 2009. The segment was entitled “Who Dropped the Ball?” The commentators were quick to point their fingers at other people. The problem with that is that every time you point a finger at someone else, there are 3 other fingers pointing back at you.

A wise person is someone who realized that when things go wrong that he too might be a part of the problem. Realizing that will help you to be part of the solution.

Wise guys already have their minds made up and just look for bits of information to prove their own point of view.

It is difficult to find a different point of view on the news, no matter how many stations you watch on television. There are not enough wise people prepared to changes their minds after studying the facts. But, let’s face it. It is very difficult to get the facts. It is very difficult to learn something new.

Wise people realize that they do not know it all. In fact, the more they read and study, the more they are humbled by the fact that they still have a lot to learn.

People in the Archdiocesan Biblical School tell me that after studying all of the Books of the Bible, they still have much to learn about the Scriptures. They will need to study the Holy Book for the rest of their lives because it is so profound.

Wise people like the wise men in the Gospel are searching for the star that will give their lives purpose and meaning. Wise peo-ple recognize their dependency upon a higher power. Religious people call the higher power God.

Wise guys think that the world centers around them. Consequently, they live for themselves and are oftentimes greedy and selfish. Wise guys think that they are smarter than the rest of us and will take advantage of other people for their own benefit. We are all suffering the consequences of the wise guys among us. Wise people are generous with their time, talent and

treasure because they want to make a positive impact on the world. They want to leave the world a better place after they are gone.

Wise guys d not share what they have with others and could care less about the little people.

Wise people will be remembered with affection by us and I am sure that they will enjoy their eternal reward.

Wise guys will go down in history but probably will leave the earth without many friends.
