Dear Parents,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I hope that everyone enjoys a blessed Christmas and a relaxing new year. I hope your days are filled with an abundance of family time. Two glorious weeks to spend with family is truly a blessing. Although December was a short month in school, it was jam-packed with so many wonderful activities that highlighted the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of our Lord, Jesus. How wonderful for your children to be in an environment where Christ is at the center of the season! Our pre-kindergarteners, kindergarteners, first graders, and second through fifth graders did a beautiful job giving glory and praise to our Savior with their lovely voices.

When we return on January 4, 2016, our students (and staff) should be re-energized and ready to engage in more learning. We will be well into the second trimester of our school year.

At the end of January, we will be gearing up for Catholic Schools Week 2016. Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service is again the theme for 2016. The theme highlights the fact that Catholic schools are not only communities themselves, but also part of the communities, cities, and states where they are located. Catholic schools are known for their focus on academic excellence, faith development, and service to enable students to serve their communities and nation in the future.

I hope you and your family will join us during our Catholic Schools Week celebration. Please bring your friends and neighbors, particularly those who may be thinking about Catholic education for their children. Please make every effort to be part of the many activities we have planned for this year’s Catholic Schools Week.

CHRISTMAS SHOWS

Christmas St. Mary’s style included four beautiful Christmas Shows featuring

different grade levels. Much appreciation is extended to the teachers and their

students for sharing the story of the birth of Jesus in such a lovely way.

Mrs. Jeanie Stark, Sister Aloysius, and the pre-kindergarten class; Mrs. Dana

Hilmoe, Mrs. Christine Pentony, and the kindergarten class; Mrs. Tina Forsythe,

Mrs. Jonna Larkin, and the first grade class; and Mr. Trevor Rowland, Ms. Bonnie

Cleary, Mrs. Rae Leggett, Ms. Mary Poffenberger, Mrs. Lori Balog, and the

second, third, fourth, and fifth grade classes really spread the true meaning of

Christmas.

Within our archdiocese, inspired by our Holy Father Pope Francis and led by our good local shepherd Archbishop William Lori, we are being encouraged (and challenged) as a Church to “Be Missionary Disciples.” What that means, essentially, is that each one of is called by God through our baptism to use our gifts in the spirit of purpose and mission: each one of us can make an impact and help bring others to Christ and his Church if we respond. We have a duty

CHRISTMAS PRAYER SERVICE

The NJHS also planned and led an Advent Prayer Service with the student body

on our final day before the start of Christmas Break. The Pre-K class sang their

Advent Prayer Song for the school. This was another great opportunity for us to

share our faith as a school community!

RECONCILIATION

Our students in grades three through eight attended a Penance Service and,

thanks to our local priests, Father Collin, Father Larry, Msgr. Jarboe, and Father

Jicha, were given the opportunity to have their confessions heard during this

Advent season. We also appreciate the reflection music that Mr. Trevor Rowland

provided during our time in Church.

The first trimester of the 2015-2016 school year ended on Tuesday, November

24. Middle School students are recognized for academic achievements. Students

earning a 3.2 to 3.7 grade point average for the trimester are awarded Academic

FAMILY BINGO—JANAURY 23

Mrs. Jeanie Stark and Mrs. Carrie McMahon are planning our annual Family

BINGO Night event for Saturday, January 23. Come enjoy dinner and an evening

of fun for the whole family. Meal includes pizza and drinks. Baked

goods will be for sale. Following dinner we will play 12 bingo

games for great kid-friendly prizes. Doors open at 6:15

P.M. Bingo games will start promptly at 6:45 P.M.

Registration forms will be sent home soon and is limited to the

first 50 families. We thank you in advance for your support of this

event!

AUCTION SURVEY

We need your input. Over the last eight years, the Home &

School Association has taken on more financial responsibilities

in order to help St. Mary Catholic School offer a quality

Catholic education while trying to keep tuition affordable. For

the past several years the SMCS Auction has undoubtedly

been the greatest source of income for the HSA. This single

event raised $34,171.02 in 2012, $36,841.65 in 2013, $38,750.20 in 2014, and

approximately $29,000 in 2015. In addition to covering budgetary items, profits

from the auction have covered the cost of air-conditioning five classrooms,

purchasing additional iPads to create a mobile lab for K-5 students to utilize, and

new uniforms for our basketball teams. The Auction has also directly reduced the

cost of tuition by $200 per student over a four-year period.

Although the Auction continues to be successful, SMCS family participation in the

Auction has been decreasing. We would like to understand why? What needs to

be done to make this event one in which you would like to attend? A brief

survey will be coming soon to get your input. The HSA wants to host a

fundraising event that is not only profitable but also one that more SMCS families

want to support and attend! Please give us your thoughts and suggestions. It is

all about the kids!

SCRIP

Last year St. Mary families saved over $30,000 in tuition by

participating in the SCRIP Program. SCRIP dates this month

are January 4, 11, and 25.

STAND/SHIELD THE VULNERABLE

The Archdiocese of Baltimore and Saint Mary Catholic School are committed to providing a safe environment for children. Our procedures for volunteering in schools require that a volunteer who will have substantial contact with children must complete screening and training procedures that are outlined on the www.archbalt.org website.

The current and effective version of the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Child and Youth Protection Policies and Procedures, including the Statement of Policy for the Protection of Children &Youth and the Code of Conduct for Church Personnel of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, which incorporates any revisions to the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Child and Youth Protection Policies and Procedures that may be made from time to time, is available on the Child and Youth Protection page of the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s website and on the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s online compliance management system, Shield the Vulnerable.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCIAL

Middle School Social will be held from 3:00 to 4:30 on

January 8. A dollar donation is required to help offset the

cost of drinks and snacks.

BAKE SALES

Pre-Kindergarten will have a bake sale on Wednesday,

January 6. Fourth grade is scheduled for Wednesday,

January 20. Second grade’s bake sale is on Wednesday,

January 27.

WOLFGANG CANDY FUNDRAISER

Back by popular demand is our Wolfgang Candy fundraiser. Delicious treats that

will arrive before Easter. More information is forthcoming. Mark your calendars,

because the sale will begin on February 8 and orders must be placed by February

22. The candy will arrive on March 17.

PIXIE SHOP

The SMCS Pixie Shop was simply fabulous. Mrs. Rachel O’Connor and Mrs. Stacey

Stine did an amazing job planning and organizing this special event for our

students. The Msgr. Passarelli room was truly transformed into a

Christmas boutique with gifts available at incredible prices and for

all the people on our students’ Christmas lists. Many thanks to our

elves, Carolyn Ambush, Bella Barron, Susan Burkey, Kelly Byrne, Cathy

Ellis, Mary Fink, Jen Foster, Susanne Harbert, Lucille Jardinier, Sarma

McCafferty, Carol McCardell, April Nitzell, Charlize Peyton, Karen

and Craig and Rachel O’Connor for donating our raffle items. The profit from the

Pixie Shop was approximately $1,100.

Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. The scholarship admission requirement for NJHS is a cumulative 3.7 GPA for all core academic classes during a student’s middle school career. (Core academic areas are Religion, Reading, English, Vocabulary, Math, Science, and Social Studies.) Students are also required to maintain at least a grade of Satisfactory in Special Area subjects and in Conduct and Effort across the board. Sixth grade students, new students, and current seventh and eighth graders receive an invitation to apply at the beginning of the third trimester.

CHRISTMAS GENEROSITY

Once again this year our Student Council participated in the Salvation Army

Adopt-A-Family Christmas program. SMCS students

adopted seven families. Through the read-a-thon, students

earned $2,829, enabling them to purchase toys, clothing,

and grocery gift cards for our adopted families, which is

sure to make their Christmas brighter. Our school

community is so generous! The Student Council would like to

thank Mary, Alice, and Louisa Poffenberger, Jennifer, Logan, and Delaney

Flanagan, Debbie and Sofia Corsi, Kim, Rory, and Aidan O’Hanlon, and Mrs.

Forsythe for delivering all the gifts to the Salvation Army.

DOOR DECORATING CONTEST

The Student Council sponsored a door decorating contest. All of the

teachers and students showed their true Christmas spirit as well as

their competitiveness. Congratulations to all the classes for their

festive doors. And the winners are…

TAG DAY

Student Council is sponsoring a TAG Day to benefit REACH on January 8. More

information is forthcoming.

MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE

The next dance hosted by the student council is a “Winter

Dance” to be held on Friday, January 15, from 7:00 to 10:00

P.M. The dress code for the evening is “nice dress.” That

means no jeans. Boys must wear nice slacks and a shirt with a

collar. Girls may wear either nice slacks or an appropriate dress/skirt. No

dresses with spaghetti straps or dresses that are strapless may be worn without a

shrug, jacket, or cover-up. No severely tight tops or see-through blouses may be

worn. Dresses that are too low-cut or too short may not be worn. The key is

modesty. Students who arrive at the dance without the appropriate attire will

not be admitted. Tickets will go on sale January 12. The cost is $5 if purchased

in advance or $6 if bought at the door.

NJHS SERVICE PROJECT

Members of the NJHS showed their community support by volunteering in the American Red Cross gift wrap booth at the Valley Mall one afternoon before Christmas.

OTHER NEWSWORTHY ITEMS

TRIMESTER I PBIS CELEBRATION

St. Mary Catholic School celebrated the end of Trimester 1 with a yee-haw and

some harvest-time fun. The students enjoyed a morning of kickball, football,

soccer, snacks, Thanksgiving Bingo, and classroom games, as well as some Square

Dancing lessons from GAD ABOUTS who spent time with us teaching the

basics. The students enjoyed these fun activities by earning keys for

demonstrating positive behaviors in Kindness and Gentleness, Responsibility, and

Respectfulness.

GIRLS ON THE RUN

The SMCS Girls on the Run team participated in a 5K on November 22 at Rockland

Woods Elementary School. The team is comprised of Ashley Kenny, Annabella

Kenny, Raniya Shahid, Sabrina Harman, Abigail Harman, Gabriella Tedeschi,

Georgiana Tedeschi, Lauren Stine, Isabella Muto, Josephine Muto, Isabella

Rodriguez, Juliana Rodriguez, Brianna Ellis, and Lydia Giannaris. The girls were

coached by Ms. Kelly Kenny, Mrs. Jennifer Harman, Mrs. Mo Tedeschi, and Mrs.

Lisa Muto. Congratulations for finishing the race!

CRUSADER NEWS

THE CRUSADER DEVELOPMENTAL BASKETBALL TEAM The Crusader Developmental Team (grades 5 & 6) is coached by Mr. Jonathan Hall

and Mrs. Sarah Hall. The players are Ty Ambush, Thomas

Fink, Logan Flanagan, Noah Hall, Noah Karn, Maxwell Larkin,

POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS

SMCS students have been earning keys throughout the month of December. We are truly blessed to have students who care about each other, who strive to excel in their academics, and who greet each school day with a smile.

Information concerning re-registration for the 2016-2017 school year will be sent home the week of January 4.

MARCH FOR LIFE

As many of you may know, the D.C. March for Life is taking place on Friday,

January 22, and a group of our SMCS middle school students will be participating

in the event. Please look for details and a permission slip to follow in early

MIDDLE SCHOOL GEOGRAPHY BEE

All SMCS middle school students participate in the National Geographic Bee. This year the finalists from our classroom competitions will compete on January 14, at 1:30 P.M. The 2015-16 Geography Bee winner for St. Mary Catholic School will be determined at that time.

PRESCHOOL STORY & CRAFT TIME

Mrs. Jeanie Stark and Sister Aloysius are offering a story and

craft time for 3 to 5 year olds on January 13, at 12:00 P.M.

St. Mary Catholic School follows the announcement for

Washington County Public Schools. Please listen to your local

radio stations or NBC25 for possible school cancellations, late

openings, or early dismissals. In the case of a two-hour delay,

Pre-K will not have school. An email/text through Connect5 will be sent.

MUSTARD SEED MATCH FOR ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

The date has been extended! The Archdiocese of Baltimore will

award $1 for every $2 that SMCS raises to establish an endowed

fund within the Catholic Community Foundation which will

specifically support tuition assistance for students enrolled in

SMCS. Please consider making a donation with the knowledge that it will be

matched a dollar for every two dollars you donate. To date $90,733 has been

raised by SMCS, so the Archdiocese will match with $45,366.50. There is still

time for us to meet our goal of $150,000 to receive $75,000 in matching funds

from the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

BRING A FRIEND TO SCHOOL DAY

We are having the "Bring a Friend to School Day" in an attempt to attract new families into choosing Catholic education for their children. We believe if other children spend the day at SMCS with our students and staff, most (if not all) will like their experience and will want to attend in the near future. We have spots for more students and would like to share our wonderful school community with as many students as possible. Our goal is to someday have two classrooms per grade. Please consider allowing your child to invite a friend whose family might be interested in SMCS.
