University at Buffalo Data Project

Collaboration Update

UB Professor Michael Buckley and graduate student Robert Colantuoni have been working with Gardens’ volunteers Jeanette Williams, Ronnie Dapp, Carolyn Sweeny and Gardens’ staff to make enormous progress in perfecting and populating our new plant database. The database is operational and enhancements to the system have begun. We are currently working with Robert to utilize radio frequency identification technology (RFID) to label and identify the location of plants in our greenhouses. We will be testing the new technology over the next few months. This semester, Professor Buckley’s students are also developing other improvements and our future goal is to provide public access to the data.

Gala at the GardensThe 2013 Gala at the Gardens was a resounding success - raising close to $85,000 to support the Gardens - our most successful gala in history! Many thanks to co-chairs Mary Ann Kresse and Dr. Maria Rita Andaya for their support, inspiration, and leadership!

At the Gala, we were so pleased to honor Ed Dore for his long-standing dedication to the Gardens. Ed’s hard work, philanthropy, and enthusiasm have truly made a difference in our ability to grow and continue to attract new support to the Gardens. This was a special citation given to Ed for the “unique legend of his leadership and contribution,” given so generously to the Botanical Gardens. Ed’s long list of contributions to the Gardens include the innovation of the Meridian theme, and his enduring leadership in the transition of operations of the Gardens from Erie County to the Botanical Gardens Society – both leading to our growth and community impact over the last decade. His ongoing board commitment and generous in-kind investment of his time and talents very concisely indicate the greatness of his dedication.

As a tribute to his leadership and commitment, Ed was given a one-of-a-kind crystal tree award created by artist Victor Trabucco. Schichtel’s Nursery will also donate a tree to be planted in Ed’s honor on the grounds of the Gardens. The award plaque reads, “In honor of your unwavering support, inspiring vision and exceptional dedication.” In presenting the award, Immediate Past Chairman, Mary Ann Kresse said, “Even though it is your name on the award, Ed, it is for you, your beloved wife, Barb, your beautiful children and family to whom it rightfully belongs, and it is given with our immeasurable appreciation.”

Save the date for Gala at the Gardens 2014, to be held on Friday, September 26, 2014. We are already making plans for the Gala, contact the development department at 716.827.1584 ext. 203 if you are interested in being on this year’s planning committee. Greetings from the President/CEOFrom all of us at the Botanical Gardens, we would like to wish you and your family a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. It is our hope that with your renewed support, the Botanical Gardens will continue on a path of success throughout 2014. It is because of combined efforts from our members, volunteers, dedicated staff and Board of Directors that the Botanical Gardens can enhance the quality of life for growing numbers of friends and neighbors throughout Western New York.

2013 was a great year! Attendance and participation in our education programs continued to grow as has our overall membership. Night Lights at the Gardens, The Great Plant Sale and our fall Gala were the best ever. We also made some significant changes to the Gardens in 2013 that reflect our continuing desire to improve your experience. The Panama House has been completely made over as has the Outdoor Children’s Garden. We also added an outdoor Native Garden and erected a beautiful gazebo in the outdoor Perennial Peace Garden. On your next visit, be certain to check out these improvements. Of course, none of these accomplishments would have occurred without the support of our donors, members and guests. We look forward to making even more improvements in 2014 such as adding an outdoor medicinal garden, a butterfly exhibit and introducing beneficial insects to replace pesticides to control unwanted pests in our greenhouses.

This edition includes useful information about the wonderful programs and events we have planned for 2014. To kick off the New Year, we are bringing back the very popular Amaryllis and Cymbidium Show followed by Night Lights at the Gardens. A Night Lights Launch Party to open the 12 night event is scheduled for January 28 and is being presented by Buffalo Spree Magazine. Look for details in this edition and please join us. Both events have been extremely popular and will offer you and your family excellent opportunities to have spectacular tropical experiences in the middle of winter. Also, please join us for the Spring Flower Show and annual Easter Egg Hunt. Both will be back again - bigger and better than ever.

There is no better location in WNY for a reception, wedding, bridal shower or your child’s birthday party than the Botanical Gardens. Please consider the Botanical Gardens for your next personal event. Contact our Events Department for details. Remember, Botanical Gardens members receive a discount when scheduling an event.

Be certain to order flowers for your spring planting through our Great Plant Sale Pre-Order. Our horticulture staff has assembled a variety of beautiful flowering annual and perennial plants that will make any backyard garden a sea of beauty and color throughout the summer. Check out the options in this edition and order your picks soon before your favorite choices are sold out. You can pick up your orders at the Great Plant Sale May 17-18.

Again, thank you for your support. See you at the gardens soon.Dave Swarts
