Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

What great Advent and Christmas celebrations! Thank you for sharing them with us!

As we move into this New Year via the Season of growth and renewal known as Epiphany, I want to share some updates with you: First, we continue our Wednesday Night Bible Study from 6:30 until 7:30 pm in the South Lounge. We are journeying with the Apostle, Saint Paul, through his Letter to the Romans. Join us, jump in at any time! Second, I have included the Invitation to Christian Discipleship in every Sunday Service, reclaiming our Methodist roots. Anyone can join this Church family on any Sunday, and then participate in the Methodist 101 classes that I will offer on the first and second Sundays of the month for all who are interested, member and non-member alike. Third, as we look forward to Lent, coming early this year with Ash Wednesday, the beginning of this holy Season on February 10, and followed by Easter on March 27, we will be adding some new Services and reconfiguring others. Ash Wednesday Services will be at 7 am and 7 pm in the Sanctuary and will include the Imposition of Ashes, for those of us who choose to wear them, and the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Our outstanding Choir will join us at the evening’s celebration. All this begins with Pancakes on Sunday, February 7, the Fifth and Last Sunday of Epiphany.

On Sunday, March 13, our Choir will lead us in Worship at 10 with another incredible cantata, to prepare us for the upcoming Easter events. On Holy (Maundy) Thursday there will be a Service at 7 pm, and on Good Friday a special, contemplative, Service surrounding the Seven Last Words from 2 until 3 pm in the Sanctuary. Then we will have two Easter Services, the one will continue to be at 10 am in the Sanctuary, and the new one at 7 am in our interior Courtyard. An Easter Breakfast will be served in the South Lounge between 8 am and 9:45. And I will be leading a Lenten Study, and will share more about that in our next edition. Now please don’t forget our Annual All Church Charge Conference, which will convene on Sunday, January 31, at 11:30 am in the South Lounge! Our District Superintendent, the Rev. Jan Wiley, will be presiding and every member in attendance will have voice and vote on all matters before us for the expansion of our ministries. I look forward to our first together! And then I’ll see you in Church!

Sometimes Nora Lehr believes there’s a little bit of Kansas stirring in her soul, even though she has never returned to her birthplace since leaving when she was six weeks old in 1946. “Grandma Lucretia had a dairy farm with many chickens and cows,” Nora says. “I’ve always had a love for farm animals, and I think that’s where it all started.” Before Nora was born, her parents left the San Gabriel Valley in a jeep with their three children to visit Midwest relatives. Her father had been raised in Oklahoma while her mother grew up in Wyoming.

But it was Grandma Lucretia who encouraged the Littrell family to make the trek. Nora’s parents had met in California during World War II after finding jobs at Lockheed Aircraft. But when the war ended, it was difficult for her father…a carpenter by trade … to find a steady job. “We moved around a lot, even to the mountains in Washington State where we lived within sight of a little logging community,” Nora says. “But when I was three years old, I contracted polio during the major outbreak, and the doctor suggested the family return to Southern California for a warmer climate.” Little Nora’s diagnosis wasn’t severe enough to put her into an iron lung. But she did have to remain in Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles for at least six months to undergo therapy and learn to walk again. She underwent treatments devised by Sister Elizabeth Kenny, an unaccredited Australian nurse who promoted a different approach to the treatment of polio. Sister Kenny advocated the need to exercise muscles affected by the disease instead of immobilizing them. Her principles of muscle rehabilitation became the foundation for physiotherapy, according to her biographers. For many years, Nora walked with leg braces and crutches while being home-schooled. With determination, she eventually enrolled in the public school system, and attended Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach where she worked on the yearbook. The following year, she graduated from Sierra Vista High School in Baldwin Park where she excelled in art. After graduation, she worked as a receptionist in a beauty salon and in a factory. But she soon realized she needed more schooling to progress. Determined to overcome life’s challenges, she furthered her skills at a business school where she graduated as a clerk. Later, she was accepted at Rio Hondo Community College from where she graduated with a degree in art. She also married a classmate from Rio Hondo and gave birth to her only son, David.

“The big thing has always been my health problems,” Nora says. “Throughout my life journey, I’ve had my older sister Marilyn and her husband, Duane, and my brother Doug as my constant inspirations. Now Marilyn is on hospice with a brain tumor, and I so wish I could visit with her in their Texas home.” Nora moved to Fullerton from Riverside in 1990 after she fell and broke her arm. Unable to care for her son, she wanted to be closer to her husband, from whom she has been separated, so he could watch after David. Initially, she lived in a board and care facility, but has since moved into a wheelchair-friendly apartment. The late Fullerton United Methodist Church associate pastor Frank Knaus happened to meet Nora while serving communion at her board and care. He invited her to join the congregation, and she’s been a dedicated, loving participant since. Initially, she recalls, her sister introduced her to the Methodist fellowship while living in Alhambra. Her wheelchair, which can now reach speeds of 4-5 mph, is a familiar sight on Sunday mornings as she quietly glides up the aisle for a back-row seat. “It’s a bit harder to get around now,” she confides with her winsome smile. “I have post-polio syndrome and the hardest thing to cope with is having my body adjust to temperature changes. For that reason, I miss out on evening activities.” Regardless, Nora forges ahead despite less stamina and vision problems. But her outlook remains positive. “My wish for the New Year is to stay more in tune with how I can serve others,” she says. “I want to be able to show God’s love. And I want to become the person God wants me to be.”
