/(>(52'#23*%%(?@27AB'#5CI'm involved in committee work at Guardian Angels Church and School in Chaska, Minnesota.

Recently, after Mass, a 7 year old asked if he could 'talk to me, in private'. When we found a quiet place in the back of the church, I leaned over to listen to his concern. He put his hand in his pocket, dug deep, and handed me a wad of crumbled up bills and coins ($6.57 in all). He said he didn't want me to tell his parents, because 'things are tight at home', but that he knew the church needed money to help restore the church. He said 'it's all I've got, hopefully we can get all that brick glued back in and have it ready for Jesus' birthday.'

As I tried to choke back tears, I said thank you. It was just what I needed to hear. -- Anonymous

Remembering a National Hero: Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Come join the Christian communities of the Minnesota River Valley at the Rev. Martin Luther King Celebration at Shepherd of the Hill Church, Monday, Jan. 17, 7 p.m., at 145 Engler Boulevard, Chaska. Rev. Gordon Stewart (Shepherd of the Hill), Fr. Paul Jarvis (Guardian Angels); music by Guardian Angels member, Jerry Steele, and Shepherd of the Hill’s Momoh Freeman. All Christians, lovers of civil liberties, and people of good will are invited to remember the triumph of truth and courage and integrity.

Reverend King possessed a critical consciousness and a capacity for leadership that propelled him to be the drum major for justice. He was gifted with an extraordinary commitment to make reconciliation real, despite threats on his life, his family and those who demonstrated and marched alongside him.

Facing death, Dr. King consecrated his life at the altar of racial reconciliation on a daily basis. His courage in the face of peril emboldened those who followed him as much as his brilliant oratory inflamed their hearts.

Faith and courage were the only arms that Dr. King allowed those who would stand with him before the blasts of the water cannons, the attack dogs, the stoning by hostile onlookers and brutal police arrests.

As a prophet of justice, Dr. King transformed the civil-rights movement into a spiritual force for reconciliation among people of every race. He continues to inspire Americans today, black and white, rich and poor, people of all educational levels, Americans of all religions.

Have you ever wondered what to do with all those little red and orange pill bottles that your medications come in? Wonder no longer!

Pat, at the Blessed Bee Thrift Store collects them for Franklin Graham’s ministries in Third World countries. Franklin is continuing the wonderful work of his father, Billy. They clean them up and send them to clinics and hospitals in developing countries, mostly in Africa, to be used for distributing meds to the patients.

You can drop them off in the kiosk at the back of church and they will be gathered up and delivered to Blessed Bee. They ask that you please remove the labels. It makes the cleaning process easier for them and it protects your identity as well.

Have a safe and blessed New Year!

We will be taking down the Christmas decor after the 6.1.5 Mass (roughly 7:30 p.m.) Sun. Jan 9th. The Baptism of the Lord concludes the Christmas season. With many hands this job can go quickly, come and join in the fun with fellow parishioners.

Father Conran wishes to THANK all those who offered prayers, gave cards, and gave gifts for Christmas.! He remembers all in his prayers.

Unlike most other parishes’ experience on December 26, our Masses were packed during the celebration of the Feast of the (Extended) Holy Family. Because it’s the day in which we at G.A. celebrate our being part of Jesus’ extended family of disciples. Imperfect, but holy nonetheless.

It is a time every year in which parishioners are even more intentional about inviting family members, friends, colleagues, schoolmates, and neighbors “back home.” That is, back to Guardian Angels after being away for a while, or back to their spiritual home within the Catholic Church. A church many may not have ever experienced before, or only had distorted views of from the media.

Research reveals that the number of baptized American Catholics leaving the Faith of their ancestors is approaching a stampede. We at fast-growing Guardian Angels Church pride ourselves in achieving a beautiful balance of tradition and modern relevance.

Engagement is also incredibly important to us. That is, discipleship is not only practiced at church. What happens outside of our spiritual fitness center is, in fact, as important to the program as what happens inside it.

This makes sense to younger folks. And it is one reason for our parish’s rapid growth in membership and ministries. We wouldn’t have achieved the past three years’ growth in collections—during a recession! – if it were not for parishioners actively inviting and welcoming new members in.

Please do remember to celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family next December as a gathering of the extended holy family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. But don’t wait until that important feast to invite, to evangelize. Every parishioner should be doing this every Sunday of the year.

Here are some photos taken at our “extended holy family’s” recent Homecoming Weekend. ~ Fr. Paul

Who’s In? Who’s Out? The book of Leviticus in the Old Testament contains a long list of rules for Jewish people to become “pure” and to maintain that purity. This purity has nothing to do with simple cleanliness. The rituals to ensure purity guaranteed a worthiness to be in contact with sacred things. The code for the priests who officiated in the temple ceremonies required the highest degree of purity. The Pharisees would only eat with others who were keeping those strict laws of purity. Social exclusion was the Jewish norm. The elite mixed only with the elite and the pure with the pure. Some Jews, the Essenes, took themselves off to a desert settlement to be even more pure and exclusive. So, along comes John the Baptist. He walks around in animal skins, eats grasshoppers, and doesn’t seem to care all that much about the laws of Moses. He knows the Messiah, the Savior, is at hand and he says that all must repent and be baptized—men and women alike, and regardless of social status. No wonder the Pharisees, Sadducees, and other elite people are shocked and enraged. Jesus appears and insists on being baptized, just like everybody else in the crowd attracted by John. John reluctantly agrees, knowing that Jesus is the expected Savior. Jesus breaks even more rules: he heals on the Sabbath, forgives sins, and invites all sorts of people to his table. He shares meals with tax collectors and prostitutes, as well as respectable, even wealthy, citizens. Is it any wonder that people were shocked? Jesus was a scandal. He was inclusive of all people without any limits or preconditions whatsoever. Jesus not only loved them, he made them feel wanted, cared for, and included. Should we not do the same? Remember, Jesus did say to follow him.

Gabriel's where Fr. Ravoux baptized his first Native American, in March of 1840. He left Prairie du Chien to serve as a missionary in Wisconsin Territory (eventually becoming Minnesota Territory and then the State of Minnesota) in September of 1841.

Upon arriving in Wisconsin Territory, Fr. Ravoux spent a few days with Fr. Galtier in Mendota, across from Ft. Snelling, before setting out on his travels in to the wild. He reached Traverse des Sioux after four days where he began his study of the Dakota language with Louis Provencal, a Frenchman who had been trading in the area for forty-five years. After a brief stop at Little Rock, Ravoux traveled by horseback to Lac qui Parle (straight west from us, nearly to South Dakota border) in January of 1842.

Early that spring, he returned to Mendota for the summer. Jean-Baptiste Faribault, a prolific and influential French Canadian trader who had an established trading post in Little Prairie, was an ardent evangelist of the Christian Faith. He invited Fr. Ravoux to his post to continue his linguistic studies and start the St. Francis Xavier Mission, thereby founding our parish community.

In 1843, Fr. Ravoux journeyed to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, north of Dubuque. There he authored the Wakantanka ti ki Chanku (The Path to the House of God), a prayer book intended to explore the beautiful vocal abilities of the Dakota. The book was printed on a printing press belonging to Bishop Crétin of St. Paul, and translated from the French to Dakota by Alexander Faribault and his brother Oliver and David.

In 1844 Fr. Ravoux, who had already spent three years in the area, arrived at Mendota to assist Fr. Galtier. When Fr. Galtier left to serve another parish in the fall of that year, Fr. Ravoux

assumed full responsibility for ministering to the thriving Mendota community, which was the American Fur Company's chief trading center with the Dakota (Sioux) Indians of Minnesota territory. Fr. Ravoux had the historic church of St. Peter constructed in 1853, still standing and the oldest church in continuous use in Minnesota.

Upon Bishop Crétin's death on February 22, 1857, Fr. Ravoux was named the sole administrator of the diocese of the Minnesota Territory, a position he served until the installment of Bishop Grace in 1859. He was the diocesan administrator when Minnesota became a state.

Brigadier General Henry Hastings Sibley, aware of Fr. Ravoux's favorable reputation among the Dakota, recommended him to baptize the Dakota involved in the Dakota War of 1862. Of the thirty-eight that were hung in Mankato on December 26, 1862, Fr. Ravoux personally baptized 33. When Chief Shakopee and Medicine Bottle were captured in Manitoba, Fr. Ravoux baptized them and administered their Last Rites, accompanying them up until their final moments on November 11, 1865.

There is one account that while traveling to a mission during a blizzard, his horse died in the extreme cold. In order to survive, he had to split open the horse’s belly, and crawl inside to escape the weather. This intrepid man of great survived to continue his work for God.

The final fifteen years of his life he spent incapacitated at St. Joseph's Hospital, in

St. Paul, where he died at the age of 91 on January 17, 1906. Upon Fr. Ravoux’s death he had been a Vicar general for the diocese for 42 years, and a monsignor in the Roman Catholic Church for 19 years.

The interesting this is that he spoke French, English, and Dakota. But not a lick of German. Imagine that!
