It’s taken a year o assessments, con-sultations and numerous open houses,

but AltaLink is confdent they haveound the best route or the new trans-mission lines. Early in 2011 they will besubmitting their application to the Al-

berta Utilities Commission, AUC.“I do believe, having been on the ront

line at all o those open houses andmany o the conversations at kitchentables, that we have identifed the routethat has the lowest (amount o impact),”

said Leigh Clarke, Senior Vice President,

External Engagement.“Again every route has impact and or

those olks that would be on the routethat is ultimately approved, clearly

we’ve got to work with them on an on-going basis.”  Alberta has grown by more than a

million people and electricity use hasmore than doubled in the last 30 years, and yet nothing has been done to up-grade the transmission system. AltaLinkhas been working diligently to fnd asolution, and a route, to upgrade thetransmission lines. They have come up

with a preerred route and an alternateroute.

“We’ve arrived at two routes that we’re going to put orward to the utility commissions,” said Clarke.

“One is the preerred route that willconnect the Genesee area to Langdon,to reinorce the transmission systemin Alberta and to keep up with all thegrowth.”  The alternative route runs east o

Highway 2, but Clarke said AltaLink would not be recommending that route. He said the AUC likes to see a preerredand alternative route, which is why Al-taLink will be presenting both.  The preerred route has the lowest

residential, agricultural and environ-mental impacts. The route is about 300kilometres long, and Clarke said it only impacts approximately 15 residences

within 150 metres. He said they will be working closely with the people in the15 residences to try to mitigate the im-pacts and compensate them well.

“I think we’ve done a pretty good jobat fnding the routes with the lowest

overall impact,” said Clarke.

“All routes have impacts and it’s upto us to have listened well, done our homework and we’re absolutely pre-pared to continue talking to people and

working with them to reduce the impactthat we will have.”  The residents along the preerred

route were notifed early in December. I the residents don’t agree with AltaLink’sresearch and fndings, they will have anopportunity to appear at the applicationhearing. They can oppose AltaLink, andsubmit their own evidence to deendtheir case, and the costs to do so will

be covered. Clarke said they will be do-ing consultations right up until the timethey submit the application to AUC.

“I suspect we’ll hear rom some olksthis week that want to talk about somemore specifc issues now that we’vemade our decision. I welcome thoseconversations,” said Clarke.

Clarke said a debt o gratitude isowed the people who have taken timeout o their busy schedules to providetheir concerns and input into the routes

being considered. He said that becauseo the input given, some routes weredropped and there were even a ew new routes added. Clarke is confdentthat as long as they have done their homework and correctly identifed theroute with the lowest amount o impact, the AUC should likely approve their preerred route. The general consensus

at AltaLink is that most o 2011 will betaken up by the commission’s process.

They are hopeul they will have a deci-sion by all. Clarke said a project o thismagnitude will take two years to com-plete once construction has begun.

Rehearsals are always an iportant part of preparing for any perforance and after having a few

weeks of for Christas, the perforers in Hollywood: Dancing with the movies were right back at it.

shannon LeClair Photo

Times Reporter

Since September, drama students atStrathmore High School, SHS, have beenpreparing for their performance “Holly- wood: Dancing at the Movies”.

“You hear a lot about Dancing withthe Stars on TV, so I thought we’ll call itDancing with the Movies... just kind of aplay on words,” said teacher Paula Rich-ardson.

Hollywood is the theme because all of the songs are supposed to be from mov-ies. Richardson said they cheated a little  bit and got songs from TV shows, andthere was another dance an instructortaught them.

Students have been working hard, learning a variety of different dances, in-

cluding some Latin dances.“We had a professional choreographerfrom Calgary come and work with thekids for just over two weeks,” said Rich-ardson.

Expressions the Dance Gallery alsohad instructors visit the high school toteach the kids.

“We’ve had quite a bit of work withprofessionals in the business, that’ssomething that we just haven’t done be-fore,” said Richardson.

“We’ve had little bits here and there, but this one was quite concentrated.”

When the students were about to beginlearning the Latin work, the instructorasked if there were any more boys. Rich-ardson went around the school duringlunchtime and found a couple of boys who were on spares.

“I asked them if they would like tolearn to Latin dance and I had two boysin Grade 12, that have never done dance before, actually take me up on the offer. “

The boys are getting credit for it, and

she was impressed that they gave uptheir spare and took a leap of faith tolearn. There will also be a variety of small group dances, which the studentschoreographed themselves. The students

also were able to pick their own cos-tumes for their performances. Richard-son said some picked outts based on

the song, while others picked outts thatgo with the movie.

“It goes right across the board which Ithink is really cool. In a show, a broad-  way show, generally speaking it’s onestyle throughout the entire show,” saidRichardson.

Opening night is on Jan. 6, which couldinvoke a few concerns with the Christmas break landing right in between rehears-als and opening night. Richardson is con-dent that the time off will not affect theperformance and said the students hadtheir dance moves down pat before the  break. There will be a few days beforeopening night to polish anything thatneeds a little work.

The show is running for three days,  Jan. 6, 7, 8 with all performances tak-ing place at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 at thedoor, or call Paula Richardson at 934-3135 to purchase in advance.

The second annual Robbie Burns dinner put on by theStrathmore and Gleichen Masonic lodges will be takingplace on Jan. 22. Many people celebrate the famous Scot-tish poet worldwide by holding a dinner on or near his

birthday, with the rst dinner takingplace in 1802.

“It happens all over the world, andnot necessarily right on his birth-day. Obviously people try to keep itaround there,” said Kevin Keegan amember of the Strathmore Masoniclodge and one of the organizers.

Robbie Burns’ birthday was Janu-ary 25, 1759. Due to the number of dinners being held in his hon-our they are spread throughout the

month of January. Burns was a poetand lyricist. One of his poems AuldLang Syne, is still often sung on New

Years Eve. The format for the dinner has al-

ways stayed the same, and here inStrathmore, Keegan said, dinner isalso done the traditional way.

“If we’re lucky, we’ll be able to getsomebody with a good Scottish ac-cent to do the address to the haggis, and then we celebrate dinner,” saidKeegan.

“In our program we put both whatit says in brogue, as well as in English, it’s quite long.” The basic format of the dinner begins with a welcome

and announcements, followed by the Selkirk Grace. Af-ter the grace is a bagpiper, and the cutting of the haggis

where Burns’ ‘Address to a Haggis’ is read and the haggisis cut open. Last year women from the Anglican Churchprepared dinner, and will once again prepare it this year.

“They did it last year and they did a great job for us,”said Keegan. While the tradition has been running strong for many,

many years, Keegan said it’s only new to the Gleichenand Strathmore lodges because they didn’t feel they were big enough tohost such an event.

“We’re just trying to make our-selves known in the community, and

we are trying to support the commu-nity,” said Keegan.

“All the proceeds from these din-ners that we have all go back intocharity.”

It has not been determined yet which charity the funds will be do-

nated to. Keegan said there will beas much entertainment as they canmuster up. So far there will be sing-ers from the Burns Club in Calgary, aScottish dancer, and so much more.Feedback from the guests last year has given the members ideas on

what they could improve on this year. They hope it will get better andgrow every year. Keegan said they

would like to grow slowly and prop-erly over time. Last year 150 tick-ets were printed off for the dinner,

which sold out. This year there have been some extra tickets printed up, but they are still go-ing fairly quickly. The dinner takes place Jan. 22 and tick-ets are $25. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call Kevin at 403-934-3401 or Glen at 403-901-6038.

While living in a rural community itcan sometimes be easy to forget aboutthe crimes that can be an everyday thing in bigger municipalities. On Dec.22 at approximately 8:30 p.m. Shop-pers Drug Mart was the target of anarmed robbery. RCMP was called to re-spond to the complaint.

“We don’t suspect it’s terribly con-

nected to Strathmore other than we  just happen to be the location,” saidCpl. Duane White with the StrathmoreRCMP. A suspect armed with what was be-

lieved to be a rearm entered the storethrough the main entrance and pro-ceeded to the pharmacy. The suspectthen demanded the on-duty pharma-cist grant him access to secured phar-maceutical supplies. The suspect lleda bag with the supplies and exited

back through the main entrance wherethey entered a white truck and ed the

scene.“It’s a serious crime and its not one

you want to see anywhere, but it showsthat it can happen. Our proximity to amajor city probably doesn’t help us ei-ther,” said White.  There were approximately 20 cus-

tomers and employees in the store atthe time of the robbery. The under-standing is that the suspect went di-rectly to the pharmacist and did not in-

jure or have any involvement with the

other patrons of the store.  The white truck was found aban-

doned nearby and White thinks there was a second vehicle that transportedthe suspect back to where he or they came from. The truck had been re-ported stolen earlier in the day to theCalgary Police Service. White said he

would be surprised if it were Strath-more people involved due to where the

vehicle was stolen. A search was con-ducted, involving the Calgary RCMPPolice Dog Service, but the suspect wasnot found. Members of the Strathmore

and Calgary General Investigation Sec-tion, and the Calgary Forensic Identi-cation Section are assisting investiga-tors from the Strathmore Detachment.

“They are putting together investiga-tive strategies with other detachmentsand probably (will) have the Calgary city police involved in looking for simi-larities,” said White.

“I don’t think something like thishappens in a vacuum, the reasonableexpectation would be that the folks

involved, or the guy involved for thatmatter, would be involved in other stuff.”

Shoppers Drug Mart does have videosurveillance in place, but having cam-eras does not necessarily mean they

will help stop every crime that hap-pens.

“Sometimes they are valuable andsometimes they are of limited value de-pending on how the bad guy presentshimself,” said White. The investigation was still ongoing at

press time.

Cheadle is looking at creating anoutdoor ice rink. The estimated cost of the project is $44,954.06. A letter was

submitted to county councillors to askfor help with the project. Councillor Bernice Bland said her understandingis that they are just looking for assis-tance, not for the full amount. They  would like it to be utilized year roundand are looking to have the rink as safeand as warm as possible. The issue wastabled for further discussion.

Gerald Skibinsky, Manager of Pro-tective Services for Wheatland County, presented council with a draft of the joint re service agreement to review. The draft was a sample document thathad been provided by the province of

Alberta. There were a few concernsabout the wording on some parts of the draft. One of the things that will bereworded is the statement that emer-gency crews will be able to give imme-diate response in case of an emergen-cy. Reeve Ben Armstrong said it is notfeasible for them to give immediate re-sponse, and would like it to instead say they will give reasonable response. It was also pointed out that clarication was needed in regards to emergency crews rescuing people by any meansnecessary. Instead council would liketo see it worded to say by any meansnecessary without endangering their, the emergency workers, own life. The county would also like to see a

long-term budget of what may be or isneeded. Council is not looking to dis-

rupt the process and it will not affectthe amount provided. It is just meantas a way to plan and prepare for thefuture. That way if any need for fund-ing comes up, council and the depart-ment can be prepared to possibly pro- vide extra funds.

Council will bring a revised copy  back at a later date for approval andendorsement. It will then be sent tothe each of the re ghters associa-tions for their input and approval.

 lookIng baCk at 2010

 and ahead to 2011

In 2010 everyone employed by thecounty took rst aid courses. Every-one passed the course and Skibinsky said there will now be at least oneperson at every job site who is rstaid trained. The county may be look-ing at hiring another peace ofcer atsome point during 2011, though thathas not fully been determined at this

time. Thanks to grants from AMA, 70re ghters could be trained in thepast year. Each of the re departmentsaround the county was given $20,000for small capital funding. There will beanother ve training courses in 2011for the re departments. Skibinsky ap-plied for grant funding again this year through AMA but stated he has also se-cured funds in the small capital budgetto cover costs if needed. The re de-partments will all also receive $20,000this year for small capital funding.  Another thing council and Skibin-

sky will be looking at in 2011 will beupdating and amending the disaster  bylaw. The bylaw was written in 1996and there are a number of things that

have changed since then in regards todisaster preparations.

Tanning is anatural process.

Your body is biologicallydesigned to produce melanin, which darkens the skin and is a

natural free-radical scavenger.By increasing pigmentation a  tan is your body’s natural way of

protecting you from sunburn; formost people it can be the equivalent

of an SPF 4. Sunburns are a totallydifferent process. A sunburn is aninjury; the red colour actually is

increased blood ow, which is sent to the skin to help your body repair

the damage done by overexposure to ultraviolet light.

Never Sunburn!

Letters to the editor

To the Editor 1) Wheatland County to take on a foreign aid role? From their last report, Ben Armstrong’s idea of con-

tributing to the Canadian Foodgrains bank is a greatgesture and if he and other councillors wish to becomeMAJOR CONTRIBUTORS then good for them as longas it is their money. This is not what our county taxdollars are collected for and consequently the councilis proposing to make a policy to allow the expendi-

ture. We pay federal taxes that contribute much to other countries, that is part of their mandate not the county’s.

I believe residents of the county have done an amaz-ing job on the Foodgrains front year after year withoutthe county. Yes, Wheatland has strong roots in agricul-ture and produces a lot of grain, but it is not coun-cil’s right to collect taxes for any charitable organiza-tion or to exercise their personal choice by dictating which organization should receive funds. Do they feelso ush with our tax dollars that they can’t spend it allin Wheatland County?

We have volunteers involved in many very goodorganizations that support the less fortunate. In fair-ness, shouldn’t all of these organizations also receive aportion of our taxes? Every organization spends many hours fundraising, I’m really not comfortable with thecouncil wanting to champion their personal favourite, and I don’t believe that putting Wheatland County as a

MAJOR SPONSOR of the CFB, an overseas endeavour, would in any way promote our county. Would a busi-ness or person looking to relocate from another townor province know of it, or even care? If you were to asksomeone in Strathmore or Calgary about it, I bet they  wouldn’t know. If a portion of my tax dollar is to go toan agricultural charity, I would like to see more go toour own local Wheatland County foodbank and localhamper societies.

If my right to choose my charity is being taken, is my right to the amount also gone? Will I get a charitable taxreceipt? Will people stop making charitable donations because they think their taxes are taking care of it?

If these councillors wish to collect funds for their special charity they could hold a fundraiser for thatpurpose, outside of the county framework. That’s whatthe rest of us do.

2. Are our elected ofcials really representing us?Over the past year, our county councillors and school

trustees have been questioned on how they are operat-ing the boards they represent. A letter to the editor inlate November got me thinking. In response to criti-cism that a CAO position was given to a board member  without the usual staff posting, the letter stated that this

person is “nice” so it shouldn’t matter. I am sure thisperson is nice BUT...

Boards are made up of people just like you and me, with the mandate to represent the populace on govern-ing issues. We expect our board members to be honest, trustworthy, informed and up to date with the issuesfacing our county and schools. We expect them to show decorum beyond reproach. The persons in the letter seem to feel that as long as a person is “nice” then the

other attributes can be overlooked and our councillorsand trustees do not have to adhere to the appropriateprocedures. Our lack of response allows the boards to believe that we accept this.

It has happened within the county council and also with a school trustee who did not step down after he was disciplined for providing condential information which made its way to public meetings during his elec-tion campaign. Our lack of response has allowed the board of school trustees to operate without public in-put from Ward 5 for the next year, although this person will receive his trustee remuneration.

The mandate in a democratic society is for the publicto be able to take part in the governing process. Candor appears to be lost in our political environment. Candor is telling it like it is, being honest and up front. Candor is what make strong relationships, governments, and businesses. I am wondering if people are not getting in-

volved because they do not look at comments/opinionsas discussion or debate but as a character aw. If youagree/disagree with me/them, you are nice or nasty?Do people feel their character is being judged if they speak? Do we see it as a weakness to give an opinion.Have we become a society where we all need to thinkthe same (or at least pretend we do) in case we mightlook “bad”?

There is a lot of negativity around both our elect-ed and volunteer boards, people do not want to goto meetings. When people do not take ownership of the government then the board’s personal agendas startcreeping in. We all need to do our part to keep edu-cated, up to date and involved with the decisions thataffect our lives. Parents need to go to school councilmeetings, rate payers need to go to public meetings. If  you are part of an organization, you need to volunteer. It takes time and effort, but that is what democracy is, itdoesn’t come free. It doesn’t happen without you. Our elected/volunteer boards are only able to develop our  way if we participate in the discussions. In fact it is theonly way our communities will develop as we envision.

To the Editor

For some of you out in the country you are likely still waiting for parcels and cards from loved ones; but haveno fear I’m sure Canada Post will get them to you sometime next year.

I have had it with the mail service in this area. Thepost ofce used to be known for its service no matter the weather. Trust me I know. I once delivered mail tothe good people on R.R.#1. Now we don’t even get that.

Good service that is. Or even a carrier who cares.I was informed on the 30th that our mail carrier went

on holidays before Christmas and no one was availableto deliver our mail. Now when I put in for holidays my  boss says either yes those dates work or no. If I get a yes, I plan my holidays. I wouldn’t have a job if I justdidn’t show up to work.

When I had the contract for R.R.#1, I had to trainsomeone on my dime then rely on them to do the mail while I was gone and pay them on my dime as well. Idid nd a reliable person and I felt so good about thatperson that I gave him my contract. He did the mailfaithfully for several years. I even went back and didthe Mail Run for him when he needed a minor surgery. How is that for dedication?

But now you just leave your job and take the holiday

when you know there is no one there to do the job.Now how do you think your customers feel? Not very

jolly I would say. I wonder how many presents wereleft for him in the mailboxes. I would get at least 30 or more cards, not to mention the boxes of chocolates that were shared.

If this is how your customers are treated Canada Post you are in a sad state of af fairs. I and my extended fam-ily have decided to use Grey Hound, UPS etc anything

but you.Oh if you need to complain to Canada Post on your

service please don’t bother going into the local ofcethat will do you no good. Phone the 1-800 number or send them an email. Then once you get a case le (ohgoody I can’t wait for that) you can send a letter to your Ombudsman to get some help there.

Good luck with that it may be several years before hegets to you with all the complaints there are.

I for one don’t want to have to wait till 7:30 p.m. topick up my mail. I would like it within a timely fashion. It shouldn’t take two weeks to get mail from Edmontonor two weeks to get an express post that should taketwo days.

RCMP

During the month of January 2011, the Pro-  vincial RCMP and Sheriff Integrated TrafcUnits will be focusing their attentions on Inter-

section Safety. With the goal in mind of promoting public

safety by lowering the rates of injury and fatalrelated crashes, Motorists as well as Pedestri-ans are reminded they should be vigilant whentraveling on Alberta Highways, especially in thearea of intersecting roadways.

Intersections can be very dangerous areas, especially during peak driving times such as“rush hours” when vehicle trafc volumes areat their highest. The following safety tips areprovided to assist in getting everyone homesafely.

Motorists should always:• Pay close attention to your driving and that

of others.• Watch out for other drivers and pedestrians.

• Always look before proceeding through in-tersections regardless of the trafc light color.

• Be prepared for the unexpected and sharethe road safely.

Do Not:• Run red lights.• Roll through a stop sign.• Speed through intersections.• Follow too closely.• Make unsafe left-hand turns.• Rely on having the right of way.

Pedestrians should always:• POINT, PAUSE, and PROCEED.• Be alert at intersections and always look

out for possible dangers when crossing the

street.• Make eye contact with drivers before youcross the street. James Johnston Staff Sergeant RCMP K Divi-

sion Trafc Services says: “In Alberta, in 2008,89 people were killed and 9,134 people wereinjured in collisions at intersections in Alberta. About 90 per cent of collisions are attributableto driver error. Driving properly and safely isimportant to reducing collisions”.  John Zee A/Inspector Alberta Integrated

Sheriffs says: “Each year lives are needlessly lost or injured and property damage occurs asa result of intersection related collisions on our  Alberta highways. Virtually every collision can be attributed to driver error, be it inattentionor disobedience of trafc laws. Our hopes are we can gain full compliance of all trafc laws

and prevent intersection related collisions from

occurring.”

Alberta Driving Statistics:• In Alberta, in 2008, three of the top ve

most frequently identied improper driver ac-tions were making a left turn across the pathof an on-coming vehicle (12.5%), committinga stop sign violation (8.6%), and disobeying atrafc signal (7.4%).

• Failure to stop at a stop sign results in a$287 ne and 3 demerits. At a stop sign, driversare required to come to a complete stop, whichmeans the wheels of the vehicle must not bemoving, before proceeding safely through theintersection. This complete stop gives driversthe opportunity to look for oncoming trafc, pedestrians, or cyclists.

• The proper procedure for executing a turn

is to signal in order to provide reasonable warning to other drivers of your intention toturn, check trafc and conditions on both leftand right and left again before making the turn.Check for vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traf-c. Maintain your lane through the turn.

• Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a cross-  walk carries a ne of $575 plus 4 demeritpoints.

• Pedestrians always have right of way at anunmarked intersection or stop sign unless oth-erwise indicated by signage.

• Pedestrians may indicate their intention tocross the road by holding their arm straight andpointing across the road in the direction they intend to cross.

• Pay attention! Remove headphones; putaway cell phones or other electronic devices

 when crossing the street.

Edmonton won3-2 over the Sas-

katoon Contactsdespite the factthat the Athleticstook 11 minor pen-alties to three by Saskatoon.

“One team was alittle rougher thanthe other,” Hallpointed out after the game. “The

team that got penalized more came out withthe win.”

Linesmen Tyler Jensen, of Drumheller, and  Jon Wiens, of Calgary, joined Hall to ofci-ate in the Mac’s nal after being selected for the honour by the tournament committee. Lo-cal referees Justin Geeraert and Dallas Duch-eminsky also took part in the weeklong tour-nament.

“It’s an important job,” noted Mac’s tourna-ment chairman Neil Robertson. “Obviously wecan’t play the game without the three on-iceofcials. For our tournament we try to makesure we have the best ofcials here that wecan. It’s a very important job that they do and

we really do try to get the best of the besthere just like the players.”

Robertson explained that the ofcials are allsupervised and evaluated during the prelimi-nary round of the tournament before a deci-sion is made as to who will work the nalgame.

“It’s a big deal,” Robertson said. “For an of-cial to make the nal games, male or femaledivision, is a big feather in their cap. They hada great week and they deserved to be here.Congratulations to them.” Jensen, who does quite a bit of ofciating in

Strathmore at the minor hockey, Junior B andsenior women’s levels, referred to his selec-tion as a great honour.

“They just supervised us and judged us

based on our overall performance throughoutthe week,” said Jensen, who also worked as alinesman in last year’s nal. “All the guys here worked hard, but it was just great to be ableto come out here and skate in the nal.”

Hall played hockey in Strathmore until hisearly teens when he decided to take up of-ciating.

“I played minor hockey up to Bantam andthen I didn’t grow as quick as everyone else,so I decided to throw on the stripes and bravethe hockey still,” said Hall, who worked his way up through the minor hockey ranks untillanding a job as a referee in the Alberta Midg-et Hockey League two seasons ago.

Hall, who also works as a linesman in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, has aspirationsof eventually working his way into the West-

ern Hockey League.“I’d love to work in the Western League,”

said the 29-year-old, who now lives in Cal-gary. “That’s my ideal goal, absolutely.”

He would also like to land some more high-prole events with Hockey Alberta or Hockey Canada and perhaps eventually work an eventlike the World Junior Hockey Championships.

“World Juniors would be great,” Hall said.“Next year, it’s in Calgary. The likelihood of me getting it with my age and my experienceisn’t very good, but yeah, absolutely, that would be a dream.”

Despite failing to reach the heights they obtained in last year’s tournament, the UFA Bisons can classify the 33rd Annual Mac’sMidget Tournament a success. After reaching the tournament nal last

year, the Bisons were eliminated in a closeplayoff game to the eventual tournament winner, the SSAC BP Athletics, this year.

“We learned a ton – you learn way morefrom losses than you do with wins,” saidhead coach Parry Shockey. “If this tour-nament gives us the opportunity to wina championship down the road, then thisis small price to pay. I told the guys, ‘re-member how you feel right now, becauseI’m going to remind you every practice. Do you want to prepare to never feel like thatagain? Then let’s go to work.’ “ According to Shockey, the Bisons showed

ashes of dominance during the weeklongtournament. It was evident that when theBisons are ring on all cylinders, they’retough to stop.

“I liked that when we turned it up, wereally turned it up,” said the coach. “Thegame against Red Deer (the 6-2 win), that’sour hockey team. If we (play) that hockey (way) every night, we’re happy. In the oth-

er games, we saw bits and pieces of it. Weneed our guys (going) for 60 minutes and Idon’t think that we’ve had 60 minutes this year.”

After nishing the round-robin portionof the tournament with a 3-1 record, theBisons qualied for a wildcard berth inthe Mac’s Playoffs. Another highlight for the Bisons was the announcement of theall-star team, which included goaltender George Merik and forward Kirby Ruzesky. The team is now focusing on the remain-

der of their AMHL schedule and the 10 reg-ular season games they have left. The Bisone are currently in third place,

just three points out of rst in the SouthDivision. According to Shockey, it is impor-tant for the team to earn one of the top

two spots in the division and receive a rst-round playoff bye.

“I don’t think that we should settle for anything less (than one of the top twospots),” said the coach. “If we settle for anything less, then we’re basically settlingto not be successful. We came out of this(tournament) with a few bumps and bruis-es, but don’t have any real injuries, so wehave … some time to get rested up, getrecharged and be ring on all cylinders.” The Bisons are back in league action this

weekend, when they travel to Calgary toface the Buffaloes at Acadia Arena Jan. 8(7:15 p.m.). Their next home game is Jan.15 (5:30 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.

On December 12, hockey players who were at the Stan-dard Arena had a chance toskate with the Chilliwack Bru-ins and see a former Standardresident honoured. ColtonGrant is a name that was once

well known in the area when itcomes to hockey. His illustri-ous career followed, and some

Standard residents still keeptrack of the boy they are sure

will be a professional player.“Colton’s a big hockey name

in this area,” said Steve O’Neill, manager of the Standard Arena.

“A presentation was made onice and they retired the sweat-er and it’s going to be put in aglass frame case. We’re going tond a nice spot for it here inthe arena so it can be viewed

by all that come in.”Grant wore #12 for the Chilli-

wack Bruins, and that is the jer-sey which will be hung in thearena. Every year on a road trip, the Bruins stop in a small townand skate with the kids. Grantsaid from playing with them last

year they knew he was from asmall town and so they decidedto stop in Standard for the day.

“Our head coach Marc Hab-scheid kind of surprised me. Hepresented me with the jersey and stuff like that and they’rehanging it up in the Standardrink,” said Grant.

He wanted to spread thanksto all of the kids and parents

who made it out to the arenaon Dec. 12.

“They made the event happenand I know Chilliwack had an

awesome time, all of the play-ers and stuff.”

Grant began playing hockey   when he was four-years-old.He said his dad and his broth-er are all about hockey all thetime, and that it was inevitablethat he would start playing thegame too. Grant spent three

years playing for the MedicineHat Tigers before being tradedto the Bruins. Grant has n-ished his WHL junior hockey career, and he said his educa-tion has been pretty much paidfor by them. He is currently tak-ing open studies at the Univer-sity of Calgary and playing for their hockey team.

“So I’m kind of just taking ad- vantage of that, going to univer-sity. After university maybe see

what happens as far as playingpro and stuff but either way Igot Plan B now,” said Grant. What Plan B is Grant isn’t sure

yet. He is condent he has timeto gure it out. For him, playinghockey for a living would be adream come true.

“We’ll see how it works out.Sometimes it’s not the best tfor everybody. If an opportu-nity comes along, especially

when I’m done school, I’ll de-nitely take a shot at it. We’ll see

what happens, and if not, I gaveit my best shot,” said Grant.

Sixteen girlsfrom the Strathmore Storm Bantam female hock-ey team will be heading to Kelowna from Jan. 26to 31 to take part.

“What it is, is kind of a mini Olympics for 12 to14-year-olds,” said Dawn Tessemaker, trainer andhead of delegation for the team. There will be opening and closing ceremonies,

with awards being given to the top team at theend of the Games. Athletes will have a chance tocompete in alpine skiing, snowboarding, Crosscountry skiing, curling, gure skating. This year marks the rst time hockey and speed skatinghave ever been a part of the games.

“During the day they play hockey and at nightthey are running all kinds of festivals for thekids,” said Tessemaker.

A celebration of children’s sports, the Gamescalls youth from all over the world to meet eachother and become friends in the context of asports event held exclusively for them. Kelowna will host international youth, ages 12 to 15, for a week of fun-lled games, sporting events, fes-tivals, and more. The aim of the Games is not to win, but to create strong bonds of friendship andsolidarity between young athletes from all over the world.

Due to the holiday season, there hasn’t beenmuch practice for the girls but Tessemaker isn’t

concerned.“They will be going full tilt from here to the

end.”Parents will cover the costs of transportation

to get to Kelowna and back, with everything else being covered by the ICG.

“Certainly I wish them well and I want to makethe town of Strathmore known,” said Mayor SteveGrajczyk. Grajczyk will also be in attendance atthe ICG representing the town, and said he hopesto learn something about the winter games andpossibly one day have them set up here in Strath-more.

Offence lights is up

Valley West Hawks vs UFA Bisons Dec. 26 at Father David Bauer Arena

For the frst 40 minutes, it was any-one’s game. For the fnal 20 minutes, it was all

UFA Bisons.Either way, the local triple-A midget

team opened the 33rd Annual Mac’sMidget Tournament with a convincing6-1 win over the Valley West Hawks.  Ater a tentative frst two periods,

the Bisons exploded with our third-period goals to take care o the Hawks.

“I didn’t think that we brought our   A-game to start it,” said head coachParry Shockey. “We kind o tappedthem out and got a eel or them – they didn’t scare us, so we played that way.

We allowed them to be a part o it … but in the third period, we picked up

the pace and took charge.” Ater allowing the frst goal 5:44 into

the opening rame, the Bisons scoredtwo goals in the second hal o the frstperiod, beore exploding or our goalsin the fnal rame.

Sam Johnson had a two goals and anassist to pace the Bisons, while LukePhilp and Kirby Ruzesky each added agoal and an assist.

“We elt them out or the frst peri-od and a hal and then I thought wekicked it into gear,” said Johnson, who

was named player o the game. “Ater that, we had a really solid game. I think

we tried to eel them out too much and we weren’t playing our game. We were

trying to see what they had when weshould have been going at them hard-er. Eventually we realized that i weplayed our game, we’ll be successul.”

 Bisons lost in the Wild

Winnipeg Wild vs UFA Bisons Dec. 27 at Max Bell CentreOne bad stretch in the second pe-

riod cost the UFA Bisons a chance atfnishing frst in Pool A.  Ater exchanging goals in the frst

period, the Wild steamrolled the Bi-sons with our second-period talliesen-route to a 6-2 win over the localsquad.

A stretch just over three minutes costthe Bisons three goals midway throughthe second period, beore both teamsexchanged third period goals.

Despite dominating the third period, the Bisons could only muster one goal.

“The third period is our hockey team,” said Bisons head coach Parry Shockey. “The rest o it was – I don’tknow what you call them … immature, not ocused, not ready to play. In thethird period, when we turned it up,there was not enough time let.

“Attention to detail, a sense o ur-gency – it’s all the things that make ahockey club. We had no hockey player today until the third period.”

Kirby Ruzesky, who had a goal andan assist, was named player o thegame or the Bisons, while Connor Chartier had a pair o helpers. MasonBurr also tallied or the locals.

“We’re going to have to win the resto them and probably by a little bit o a

hety score i we want to continue on,”said Ruzesky o the Bisons chancesto make the Macs Playos. “We pretty much have to battle or our lives. Wedidn’t come out strong – we had a frstgood shit, we had a couple o big hitsand we thought we’d have the momen-tum – and then we just lost it. Untilthe third, we really didn’t come aroundand it was too late.”

 Bisons hammer Rebels

UFA Bisons vs Red Deer Rebels Dec. 28 at Father David Bauer ArenaConnor Chartier picked the right

time to have the game o his lie. The bruising power-orward scored

our times to lead the UFA Bisons to a6-2 win over archrival Red Deer. With no room or error, the Bisons

needed the victory to remain in thehunt or a wildcard berth in the tour-nament’s playos.

“It eels great – I haven’t done that ina while,” said Chartier, who was namedplayer o the game. “It was good to getthe team going there – this was a biggame and I tried my best to help theteam out.

“We all knew that we had to comeready to play and come out hard. Weknew we had to outplay that team to

 win.”

Chartier netted a rst period hat-trick, while Jared Potter scored once to spark the Bisons to a 4-0 lead after the rst

period. Shayne Gwinner and Chartier scored in the second pe-riod to build up a 6-0 lead, before the Rebels scored two in thethird period. Kirby Ruzesky assisted on all four of Chartier’sgoals.

“I thought we were outstanding through the rst period andI thought that we were really good throughout the secondperiod,” said head coach Parry Shockey. “Our discipline wasreally solid and our guys came to play. That’s the hockey teamthat we would like to see.

“When you rise to the occasion and answer the bell, it’spretty satisfying.”

 Merik steals the show

UFA Bisons vs Prince Albert Mintos

Dec. 30 at Max Bell CentreDespite being vastly outshot, the UFA Bisons earned a wild-

card berth in the Mac’s Midget Playoffs after a 4-1 over Prince Albert.

After giving up the rst goal midway through the rst pe-riod, UFA Bisons netminder was stellar between the pipes, making 42 saves in the win.

“All the action really keeps me in the game, especially in apressure game like this,” said Merik, the obvious player of thegame. “I could see the puck today and everything was work-ing. They are a very offensive team and we didn’t know how to handle it right at the start. We adjusted to it and we startedtaking it to them.”

Luke Philp, who also collected an assist, scored early in thesecond period to tie the game, before the Bisons responded

with three goals in the nal 20 minutes. Sam Johnson, Kirby Ruzesky and Mason Burr capped off the scoring for the Bi-sons.

“All we can say is we gave it our all this game,” said Merik.“We could have made it easier on ourselves if we won thatother game (versus Winnipeg), but we played well today.”

According to assistant coach Cody Leavitt, theteam is condent with Merik between the pipes, especially after last year’s performance at the Mac’s,

where he was selected to the all-star game.“George is George – for some reason he gets

up for this tournament and it really brings out the best in him and it’s really nice to see,” said Leavitt.“Everybody on this team has gone through roughpatches – and he’s had his too – so it’s nice to seehim shine for us when it matters the most. Espe-cially on this stage.”

Bisons ousted by AthleticsUFA Bisons vs SSAC BP Athletics

Dec. 31 at Father David Bauer Arena  The UFA Bisons defeated the SSAC Athletics

in their two regular season games in the AlbertaMidget Hockey League.

However, all that meant nothing at the Mac’sMidget Hockey Tournament.

Despite taking two leads, the Bisons were de-

feated 4-3 by the Athletics, eliminating the localsfrom the prestigious tournament.

“We ran into a hot goaltender, you have to givethem credit,” said Bisons head coach Parry Shock-ey. “Their four goals were on our errors … we havea really good hockey team, we (just) have to limitthe mistakes we make. I’d say we made six or sevenmistakes today and four ended up in the back of (our) net.

“At the end of the day, we’re an exciting hockey team to watch and we do a lot of great things – we

just don’t do them for 60 minutes”

Samuel McKechnie scored twice and Luke Philpscored once to pace the Bisons attack. Despite be-ing named player of the game, McKechnie was dis-appointed in the loss.

“You can’t even enjoy (the player of the game) because it’s all about the team,” said McKechnie.“I don’t think that anyone is happy about the loss.

Their goalie was hot … maybe the hockey gods were on their side a little bit.”
