Mass Obligation Dispensation Extended Again
Archbishop Blair has once again extended the dispensa-
tion from the Sunday obligation up to and including
Sunday, May 23rd, which is Pentecost Sunday. Mass
from St. James Church will continue to be broadcast
weekly on YouTube.com. To view the YouTube Mass
or for complete Mass attendance protocols, please see
the parish website, www.stjamesmanchester.org.
Please be reminded that the requirement to
wear a face mask when in church pertains
to everyone and includes private prayer
time, adoration as well as Mass attendance.
The Online Giving option available to all parishioners
is an easy, convenient and secure way to make regular
offertory donations. In addition, Online Giving may
also be used to make donations on Holy Days, for sec-
ond collections (i.e., Saint James School, seasonal shar-
ing and St. Vincent de Paul) as well as Archdiocesan
collections which occur throughout the year. Taking
advantage of Online Giving eliminates the need to
write checks and keep track of envelopes. It also bene-
fits the parish because of the consistency of the support
and it eliminates the cost of printing and mailing enve-
lopes. To learn more or to sign up go to the Parish web-
site, www.stjamesmanchester.org; scroll to the bottom
of the page and click on Online Giving. If you have
questions or need additional information, call Marisa
Howard, business manager, 860-643-4129.
JUST A REMINDER…
When dropping off donations or items for the rectory,
please use the slot in the door. Please do not leave
anything in the black USPS mailbox on the building.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN
YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

Embracing Change in Christ
It’s officially one month since we popped the cham-
pagne, toasted 2021 and wrote down a list of resolutions.
This is usually the time when we start to take a good,
hard look in the mirror to assess what we have done —
or have not done — with the first month of this brand-
new year.
New years can be scary, can’t they? Full of promise, sure,
but also full of room for failure. Full of space for our old
baggage, old fears and the continuation of old mistakes.
The same can be said of Christ, and the new life he offers
us, if we are brave enough to accept it. Opportunities
like that can be intimidating. In that moment, we might
find ourselves like the man with the unclean spirit crying
out: “What have you to do with me, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?”
Jesus is a comforter of the afflicted; he is a consoling fig-
ure, but he is also a challenging one. Sometimes we have
grown attached to our afflictions. The idea of correcting
bad habits or forming new ones is frankly terrifying to
us. We have a voice deep inside who sees Christ and his
invitation to repentance, and it cries out in fear: “I know
who you are!”
When we live in the present, disavowing the baggage of
the past or fear of the future, we submit ourselves to the
promise of redemption. Let us be brave everyday stew-
ards and invite Christ’s healing power into our lives. We
won’t regret it — I’m sure the demoniac never did.

NEW FOR LENT:
A PERSONAL ENCOUNTER WITH THE
POWER OF THE GOSPEL
Lent is an important season in the Church’s liturgical
year. It is the time when we take stock of where we
are in our faith so as to prepare for the death and
resurrection of our Savior. Often we lose sight of the
point of this season because we get caught up in our-
selves: how hard it is to fast; how we fail at fasting;
and just waiting for the season to be over at Easter.
Because of this, we often arrive at Easter with our lives
no more changed that they were on Ash Wednesday.
A way that our parish is seeking to prepare for Jesus
and experience true transformation in our lives in this
powerful season is by engaging with a new program
from Ascension. This program is The Ascension Lenten
Companion. This resource follows the Gospels for each
Sunday of Lent so we can better prepare for Mass and
grow closer to Jesus each day. It has daily medita-
tions, space for journaling, original sacred artwork and
weekly videos that will keep us on track.
The program kicks off on Ash Wednesday,
February 17, after the 7 p.m. Mass at St. James
Church. Meetings will take place Wednesdays during
Lent at 7 p.m. Masks and social distancing will be re-
quired. A Zoom session will also be available on Fri-
day evenings if preferred.
Each participant will receive The Ascension Lenten Com-
panion to accompany him or her throughout the entire
Lenten season. This is an opportunity for our whole
community to enter into the season of Lent intentional-
ly and receive the grace God is waiting to give us in
this holy season. Join us and take full advantage of
this transformative experience.
Books are limited so you must pre-register by calling
Karen at 860-916-4298 or emailing
[email protected]. Please include a
phone number and whether you prefer the Zoom or
live class. The cost of the workbook is $10 and a check
made payable to St. James Parish is preferred.

WOMEN’S CONFERENCE:
GOING VIRTUAL!
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the
Archdiocesan Women’s Conference, orig-
inally scheduled for November 7, 2020,
has been postponed in-person. However, the experi-
ence of the Women’s Conference will take place in an
extended format, running from November 2020 to
May 2021.
A chance to “attend” a workshop and prayer experi-
ence will be available monthly. These virtual events
will take place on the first Wednesday of every month
at 7:00 p.m. Attendees will register in advance for the
virtual event and are welcome to come as they are—
yoga pants, sweatshirt or stilettos, glass of wine or cup
of tea—to partake in spiritual nourishment and time in
community as a taste of the experience of the Women’s
Conference (workshop and prayer experience) in this
socially distant time… and it will be free of charge! Vis-
it www.CatholicEdAOHCT.org to register for these
monthly events.

information or to apply, call Frank & Margie Pearson at
