King Herod was interested in eliminating any threat to his power. His interest in the Magi’s journey to find the new king of the Jews was purely political. While we do not live in a world where infants are mass murdered because one of them might become a rival leader, we do understand the struggle for political power. People will go to great lengths to discredit others and can be very nasty to one another. It doesn’t even have to be at a national or local level; it could be in our class elections or the choosing of a homecoming court. There is something about power and dominance that drives people to act in ways that they normally would not. The only account that we have of the Magi is the Gospel passage we hear today. Much of what we know of them comes from tradition and the way the Church has interpreted this passage. The term “magi” refers to learned or wise men. Because of their study of the sky, these men were probably astrologers and realized that a significant event was associated with the start’s appearance. They were aware of Jewish prophesies, because they asked King Herod about the new king of the Jews. They were open to God’s direction, because they followed the star to find Jesus. Although King Herod’s desire to find Jesus was driven by his fear of losing his power to another person, the Magi were driven by their desire to honor the newborn king. It is likely that the Magi were Gentiles, non-Jewish people who did not share in the Jewish faith. However, their presence in this Gospel passage shows us that God uses many ways to reach out to people and bring them to an encounter with Jesus. This Gospel account of the Magi’s visit to Jesus demonstrates two different reactions. The Magi were open to being guided by the Spirit to encounter Jesus. They approached him humbly, without expectations. They recognized him as a great king. On the other hand, Herod’s reaction was defensive and full of fear of losing his power. We also have a choice of how to act when we encounter Jesus in our daily lives. The Magi were inspired by their encounters to honor Jesus and give him gifts. These three gifts given by the Magi have traditionally held a prophetic meaning. They tell us something about Jesus’ life. Gold is a kingly gift while frankincense is a priestly gift. Myrrh was reserved for burial and used as an ointment on one who would die.

Liturgy of the Word
Every Saturday the 9:00am Mass will be The Liturgy of the Word. It will be celebrated by either Deacon
Frank or Deacon Chris. There will be Distribution of Holy Communion and the daily intention
will be announced.
The Giving Tree
We would like to express a huge THANK YOU to the secret “Elves” who work tirelessly behind the
scenes to arrange, organize, sort and pack the overwhelming amount of gifts that our generous
parishioners donate to those less fortunate. Preparations began in September with the
making of the ornaments to hang on the trees and coordinating with organizations. We all
know that many hands make light work and we give thanks to the “Official” Elf Team
The Carucci Family, The Esposito Family & The Zito Family
who work quietly and selflessly for the past 12 years. In addition The Gibbons Family, Michael &
Sheri Dogali, Joe DePaelo & Josephine DeLuca and many anonymous parishioners all pitched in to help keep everything running smoothly. We collected 61 full black bags filled with toys and many, many gift cards. Of course, there always
has to be a Chief Elf, so we also extend our appreciation to Ellen Morris who coordinates everyone year after year to help those in need.
God Bless you all for your kind and giving hearts!

Celebration Of Mass
♦ Masks must be worn in Church.
♦ Please maintain social distancing. (6 feet)
♦ Purell is available in the vestibule of Church.
♦ Mass is limited to 25% capacity (about 120-140 people).
♦ Families from the same household may sit next to each other.
♦ Offertory baskets will be placed in the sanctuary on either side of the altar and in the back of church by the double doors. You may put all your first and second collection enve-lopes and offerings in any of the baskets.
♦ There is not to be any gathering in the ves-tibule before or after Mass.
♦ Please feel free to ask if you have any ques-tions or concerns.
♦ The Church will be sanitized twice a week, on Friday and Monday, before and after week-end Masses. Receiving Communion
♦ The communicant should come before the minister of Communion with their mask on for the dialogue (“The Body of Christ, Amen”) and then, moving to the side, lower the mask and consume the Eucharist and replace their mask.
♦ The Precious Blood WILL NOT be distrib-uted.
♦ Parishioners will come for Communion ob-serving at least 6 feet of distance between them as they approach. The floor has mark-ings on it.
♦ IT IS VERY STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT PARISHIONERS RECEIVE HOLY COM-MUNION IN THE HAND. This is for the safety of the parishioner receiving Holy Communion and the minister of Holy Communion. If a pa-rishioner wishes to receive on the tongue they should come forward at the end of the Com-munion line so they are the last ones receiving so that the Communion ministers can disinfect their hands if need be after each person re-ceives.
