Workforce housing spotlighted in statewide tour

BIG SKY, Montana. The 2019 Economic Outlook Seminar—put on by the University of Montana’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research—will examine a variety of trends shaping Montana, including the acute need for workforce housing—this year’s top issue of concern. Titled “Facing the Challenge of Affordable Housing,” the 44th

Annual Economic Outlook Seminar series will share critical research findings from the BBER.

It all kicks off in Helena Jan. 29, with the 66th Legislature in session before traveling on to Great Falls, Missoula and Bill-ings. On Feb. 6, there will be a live webcast from the seminar in Bozeman, held at The Commons on Baxter Lane (8 a.m.-1 p.m.). Then, after presenting in Butte, Kalispell, Sidney and Miles City, the tour wraps up with a final seminar in Big Sky, March 14 at the WMPAC (8 a.m.-1 p.m.).

Here’s how a report from the BBER describes the statewide challenge to provide workforce housing: “Buying a house in Montana can be hard. A recent Gallup study found 45 percent of Montanans were dissatisfied with the availability of good af-fordable housing. This tied Montana with Maryland and Oregon for eighth worst in the country.” The report goes on to conclude, “Montanans, or at least Montanans in certain places, may need to learn to adapt to relatively unaffordable housing.”

Our Yellowstone community is hurting. When even one of us is hurting from outside forces we are all hurting! Therefore many folks have banned together to provide financial help where needed, no questions asked. Funds are available for gas and diesel only at the Conoco (ask clerk for details), for food at the Gardiner Market (call Rebecca at 848-7524) and Food Pantry. Additional funds are available to help with rent, heating and electricity, day care center fees and perhaps other unexpected expenses (call Jim at 406-223-1579). At the end remaining funds go to the food pantry.

The Livingston Food Resource Center is eager to support community members affected by the shutdown. They provide organic, local produce, milk, meat (including wild game), prepared meals, personal items, baby formula and diapers, pet supplies, and more. There is no income requirement and recipients do not have to be Park County residents. The pantry is open Tuesday and Thursday from 1-3pm, or by appointment. Call 406-222-5335.

Yellowstone Federal Credit Union has a number of options available for federal employees affected by the government shutdown. These options include short-term, no interest loans, and loan extensions for existing loans. Other terms and conditions may apply. These special programs will continue through the duration of the shutdown. Please call our office (307-344-7974) for more details. Federally insured by NCUA.

Community Closet Furloughed Federal Employee Sup-port Program Furloughed federal employees (with proof of employment) can acquire Community Closet thrift merchandise and suspend payment until after the government opens and has issued paychecks. There will be a flexible payment plan. How it works: Federal employee customer tells register clerk they would like to use the Furlough check-out. We will fill out a form where we note name and amount. We will not take addresses or phone information, this is completely based on trust that when the customer can repay or make a payment they will come in and do so. We anticipate a budget of $100 per furloughed employee per month, but are flexible if there are special needs that need to be met. Why: these folks are our community. They have ongoing needs for outdoor gear, clothing, household goods, and more, and special needs arise like gifts or their children’s school activity requiring supplies. Please share with anyone who may benefit from this program. Community Closet is located at 416 East Park Street in Livingston, open daily from 10 am – 5:30 pm, phone 406.222.6200 or visit https://www.communitycloset.org/ for more information.
