SAINT PATRICK’S SEMINARY & UNIVERSITY COLLECTION

January 21/22, 2012 Tuition, room and board pay for approxi-mately half the cost of educating a seminarian. To sustain our vitally important work of priestly for-mation, we rely on the generosity of our benefactors and of the parishioners whom our seminarians will one day serve as priests. Your donation will help fund our core program of academic, spiritual, hu-man, and pastoral formation of priests and to pro-vide language resources that will prepare our semi-narians to communicate and minister effectively within an increasingly culturally diverse Church. St. Patrick’s carries out its mission according to the Church’s magisterial teaching, under the direction of the Archbishop of San Francisco, in accordance with the U.S. Bishop’s Program of priestly Formation and in the values of the Sulpician tradi-tion. For more information about the Seminary, please visit our website, www.stpatrickseminary.org Thank you for your generous support.

FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora The first Sunday of Advent is the New Year of the Church. January 1st is the Calendar New Year. This Monday, January 23rd is Chinese New Year, The Year of the Dragon. Another year indeed! Each year, for most of us, we see our doctor for our annual check-up. This year consider going to a different and special clinic. I went to the Lord’s Clinic to have my routine check-up and He confirmed that I was ill. When Jesus took my blood pressure, He saw I was low in tenderness. When He read my temperature, the thermome-ter registered 40° of anxiety. He ran an electrocardiogram and found that I needed several “love bypasses” since my arteries were blocked with loneliness and could not provide for an empty heart. I went to orthopedics, because I could not walk by my brother’s side and I could not hug my friends, since I had frac-tured my bones when tripping with envy. He also found that I was short sighted, since I could not see beyond the shortcomings of my brothers and sisters. When I complained about deafness, the diagnosis was that I had stopped listening to Jesus’ voice talking to me on a daily basis. For all of that, Jesus gave me a free consultation thanks to His mercifulness, so my pledge is to, once I leave this clinic, only take the natural remedies He prescribed though His words of truth: Every morning, take a full glass of gratitude. When getting to work, take one spoon of peace. Every hour, take one pill of patience, one cup of brotherhood and one glass of humility. When getting home, take one dose of love. When getting to bed, take two capsules of clear con-science. Do not give in into sadness or desperation for what you are going through today. God knows how you feel… God knows exactly and with perfection what is being allowed to happen to you in your life at this precise moment. God’s purpose for you is simply perfect. He wants to show you things that you can only understand by living what you are living, and by being in the place you are now. May God give you… For every storm, a rainbow, For every tear, a smile, For every care, a promise And a blessing in each trial. For every problem life sends, A faithful friend to share, And for every sigh, a sweet song, And an answer for each prayer.

HOLY NAME SCHOOL Dear Holy Name Families, Thank you for supporting our fundraising efforts, Team Natasha, to benefit The Pediatric Brain Tu-mor Foundation at UCSF. On Monday, January 15, Patxi’s Pizza Restaurant was busy from morning until night serving Holy Name families, taking phone orders and preparing gift cards. It was won-derful to have families come together in this com-munity effort to support the incredible work that UCSF does for children with brain tumors. Natasha Holmes was seen at Patxi’s with a big smile on her face. Thank you so much. Mr. Tom Galvin received a letter from St. Anthony Foundation’s Free Clothing Program expressing their gratitude for our generous donation of 1,200 items of clothing. You helped to carry their message of “never-ending hope” to the people of San Fran-cisco. Thank you, Mr. Galvin and 6Bstudents for your work in sorting the clothing and all of you who helped to make this a successful drive. Mr. Dennis Dea and Ms. Anna Rivieccio received a letter of appreciation from the San Francisco Fire Fighters Toy Program for the bags of gifts brought to the fire station by our Student Council members and for the generous check presented to the firemen that day. Christmas day was a happy one for over 40,000 children. Thank you to Mr. Dea, Ms. Riviec-cio, our Student Council members, parents and stu-dents of Holy Name School who added to the Christmas spirit of giving. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos, Principal

THE RAW MATERIAL Someone has suggested that if Jesus were to send his twelve disciples for psychological testing today he might receive this reply: “Thank you for sub-mitting the résumés of the twelve men you have picked

for managerial positions in your new organization. All of them have taken our complete battery of tests. In addition, we arranged personality interviews for each of your candidates with our psychologists and vocational aptitude consultants. It is the opinion of our staff that most of your nominees are lacking in the background, education, and skills necessary for the success of your enterprise. None of them shows an understanding of the team concept. Simon Peter is impulsive and would benefit from anger-management counseling. Andrew has no measure-able leadership qualities. The two brothers, James and John, place personal ambition above company loyalty. Thomas shows a skeptical attitude that would tend to undermine morale. In his previous business, Matthew was blacklisted by the Jerusalem Better Business Bureau. James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus definitely have radical political lean-ings, and appear to have unstable temperaments. One of the candidates, however, shows real poten-tial. He is a man of ability and resourcefulness, pos-sesses excellent social skills, and has contacts in high places. He is highly motivated, ambitious, and responsible. We recommend Judas Iscariot as your comptroller and right-hand man.” Today Jesus calls us. Like Peter, we lack faith. Like Andrew, we have much to learn. Like James and John, we are selfish. Like Matthew, we have a past. Like Thomas, we sometimes doubt. If Jesus could use them, he can certainly use us. With God’s help, we too can grow from strength to strength and accomplish great things for God and the Kingdom. The call to follow Jesus is urgent. Answer now.
