I once read in a health magazine, that everyone over 60 should do mental exercises to keep their minds sharp. I have shared this concept in several places around the church because it seems to me to be such a simple and good idea anyway. The implication in the article is that the subject matter needs to be something new, something that the individual didn't already know so that it would be challenging, a stretch for the mind. The suggestion in the article was simply that if everyone over six-ty took a class on a subject that was new to them, or if they would study something new, or do some-thing like learning to play a musical instrument, that would do the trick. So why do I bring this up once again? I bring it up again because it is the beginning of a new year when folks think about starting over in various areas of life. The New Year's resolutions might need some help, so let me offer some possi-bilities. Our church offers interesting courses and learning opportunities all year long. I want to en-courage you to always check the announcements in the bulletin, newsletter or e-news to see what is being offered that might not only meet this health suggestion, but also be a lot of fun. Our Spiritual Enrichment and Education Program is frequently coming up with new learning opportunities. The Pastor's Academy is also a place to check and see what is being presented. I won't try to list all things offered here at the church because that list of things is constantly changing but let me offer a cross section of possibilities you might want to consider as we begin 2020. Okay, so how about learning a new language? Did you know that our church offers a Spanish class on Monday nights? This meets the "stretch the mind" requirement listed above. If not interested in that, perhaps your New Year's weight resolution, exercise resolution, or diet resolution could be ad-dressed at the Daniel Plan class offered on Tuesday afternoons. Want to do an in depth study? How about Disciple 3, which is beginning a two year cycle of Bible Study, or my class on the Book of Rev-elation which will be offered soon. Perhaps a writing class on writing your life story might seem bene-ficial to you and loved ones. These are just a few of the opportunities offered. Again, if you are inter-ested, check the bulletin, newsletter or e-news for times, places and details. So, New Year, Fresh Start means "give it a shot." Your brain might really appreciate the workout!

See you in Church!

Pastor Gary Kennedy

Thank you Choir Thank You Choir for allowing me to provide robes in memory of Jean Preisendorf, I wanted her to still be a part of a wonderful loving group of peo-ple. The Choir and the Desert Belles were very much a love for her.

Music and serving others was the JOY of her life, in Grand Island—Help Life Line, Citizen Advocacy 25 years, Stephen Ministry Leader 30+ years, Grand Island Little Thea-ter, Grand Island Singers and her trio—The Casuals for 30 years. Here in Sun City—a Stephen Ministry Leader and Grief Share, Women’s Chorus, Westbrook Singers, plus she loved writing poetry for friends and her Beta Sigma Phi sisters annual conferences for 60+ years. Her love for others and sharing were her outside-the-family projects! Her voice coach and provider was God and she is now singing in His Choir!!!

Thank you, Lord for sharing her with us!

Advent Service of Light

Thanks to each of you whose ministry made possible our Advent Service of Light on December 8th. Health and Wel-fare Committee/Touches of Love chair Marge Barton and helper husband Dale; sound booth techs Jim Piland and Edward Jones; organist Loretta Nash and soloist Patty Mason; and ushers Leslie Fountain, Billie Kay Gordon, Dick Preisendorf, Sandy Wilson and Marilyn Gudith; and hug giver Diane Nelson made it a comforting and memorable service for all the grieving people who attended. As always the reception afterwards made our church and community members alike feel welcomed and refreshed. Thanks to those who made cookies and sandwiches, helped set up and clean up: Bonnie Anderson, Marge and Dale Bar-ton, Billie Kay Gordon, Bill Jesson, Patty Mason, Diane Nel-son (who also provides table settings) and Dick Preisendorf. Thanks to Barb Christie for running the kitchen, and the UMW members who baked extra cookies and made extra sand-wiches for us. And in addition to their many other duties, our appreciation to Marjorie and Dale Barton for making sure our votives are plentiful, clean, and filled every year. Your dedication, hard work and compassion combine to make the Advent Service of Light the comfort and support it is, to the members of our church and community.

A UMC Foundation Moment Think About It!

Charitable giving not only improves the lives of others but has been shown to increase happiness more than personal spending. Additionally, improved happi-

ness and health have been linked to reduced rates of stress and lower blood pressure. The Willowbrook Foundation is a charity that aligns with your values as a member of our church. After assuring the church’s day to day support, some of our members have voiced an interest in leaving a lasting legacy. Donations to 501(c)3 charities result in itemized deductions, which reduces taxable income for taxpay-ers. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 increased the standard deduction to $12,200 for single filers and $24,400 (2019) for married filers. These articles are meant to hi-light the possibil-ity of increasing the size of the Foundation. Inspired support from present members assures the future of our church and what it stands for. Willowbrook Strong! Gifts to qualified charities qualify for a deduction to taxpayers who itemize. The most common gifts are cash, checks and highly appreciated stocks. But other possibilities are highly appreciated real estate, cars, old life insurance policies. Also, qualified direct distributions from retirement plans make attractive giving options as well. Consider what you might do to strengthen the long term future of our Willowbrook Church. Contact Charles Musgrave or Rev. Gary Kennedy for more infor-mation to make it happen!

Did you know? Christianity is spreading in Algeria! The Christian faith in Northern Algeria goes back centuries, particularly among the tribes of Berbers. The early church father, Augustine of Hip-po, was thought to be a Berber from Algeria. Many Berbers are rediscovering their heritage and converting to Christiani-ty. However, Sunni Islam is the major religion and converts are persecuted by the government and their own families.

Colossians 4:3 reminds us: "And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ for which I am in chains." (NIV) Please remember persecuted Christians in your prayers.

A Faith Friend is a current member of the church that enjoys welcoming persons who are new to our church. Visitors and guests often feel overwhelmed when attending a new church. We offer so many activities and ministries that new members are sometimes intimidated in choosing how to become involved at Willowbrook UMC.

A Faith Friend will choose to walk with a new member for his/her first six months to one year. The responsibilities will be to attend a training meeting on January 12 at 3:00 p.m. in Wil-son Hall. You will be able to sign up to register to join this ex-citing new member ministry December 8 and 15 in Wilson Fellowship Hall.

A SPECIAL EVENT

The UMW is hosting a fundraising night at Panera Bakery at 20199 N 67th Avenue on January 29 between 4 and 8 p.m. The proceeds from this event will benefit the Legacy Fund, which will be an endowment so that in the future 100% of all proceeds from local UMW organizations will go to missions, both worldwide and here in the U.S. One must present a flyer at the time of service. These flyers will be available at circles, the unit meeting and after church on January 19th and 26th as well as on the UMW table. Enjoy a nice evening out and help the Legacy Fund meet its goal.

Coffee and treats contribute to the sharing atmos-phere. The Kris Krafters receive many donations from Willowbrook members and friends throughout the year. We try to use these donations to create washable, com-fortable, useable items for babies, children, disabled adults and those in need. Donated items that cannot be used by the Kris Krafters are passed along to other local charities. When was the last time you thought about your bed pillows? For most people, pillows are something we take for granted. But for a homeless person, they are a luxury. On the weekend of January 11/12, Willowbrook will be collecting pillows

for homeless veterans. The pillows do not need to be expensive (Walmart has some for only $3) but they do need to be NEW. Place your donated pillows on the stage in Fellowship Hall. If you don’t want to shop, we will also have pillows for sale for $3. L39’7 733 IR 43 H5A LTIKJ 5 FBTA95IA BR UIKKB47.

L3H9IBA56C—Y356 A Last month in Advent we began Lectionary Year A, which will continue until Advent 2020 when we cycle into Year B. The Year A Gospel readings are mostly from Matthew, with some interspersed from the Gospel of John. You might notice Matthew’s emphasis on Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. Matthew serves as the “bridge” between the Old and New Testa-ments. Jesus is portrayed not as a break or disruption in the story of God’s work in the world, but as the fulfill-ment of God’s word and will throughout scripture. We begin January by looking forward in time to Judgment Day, then revert quickly to “real time” with the Magi’s visit inspired by the star of Bethlehem. Next thing we know, Jesus is baptized and is calling his disciples!

Honor the life or memory of a loved one. Purchase the altar flowers for a worship service as a beautiful expression of your love. Locate the FLOWER BOOK in the Narthex. Write your name, your loved one’s name, the occasion you want to remember (birthday, anniversary, etc.) and the date you would like to have the altar flowers presented. —Place your $40 check marked “flowers” into the offering plate or bring it to the office.

Remember or honor a loved one with the UMW Mission Candle. Make your $15 check payable to United Methodist Women and place it in the special envelope in the pew pocket. Drop in the offering plate or bring to the office to help support UMW mission projects.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY Have you been waiting for just the perfect nudge to help out at

church? Wait no longer! Consider joining our communion stewards the first Saturday morning of the month for about an hour. With enough help, that’s all the time needed to prepare the communion elements for the following Sunday. Contact Nancy Prevost.

Please plan to join other members of the church family Monday, January 6th at 9:00 a.m. as we take down and stow away our Christmas decorations. The more folks we have, the faster this task will be accomplished for the year. And, YES, there will be donuts. Thanks!

Have you been telling yourself lately that you really need to lose some of that weight, get your body in better shape, feel closer to God? Are you ready to start a journey with fellow Willowbrookers to a healthier life?

We will begin that journey in January with The Daniel Plan. This is a program that has helped thousands of people toward a healthy body, mind and spirit through the five essentials of The Daniel Plan - FAITH, FOOD, FITNESS, FOCUS and FRIENDS. With the help of videos by professionals in each of those areas, small group discussions, and weekly exercise and diet tips, we will experience a new way of losing weight, getting in better shape, finding new friends, and growing clos-er to God.

Of course it will take individual work, but you will also be part of a group - supporting and encouraging each other toward our goals. And most important is the faith component. Experi-ence how God will energize your efforts, giving you strength to work toward your goal of a healthier lifestyle.

We will meet on Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m. for 6 weeks beginning January 7, 2020 (taking a week off for the Rummage Sale, of course.) The Study Guide is $9 and available when you sign up at Coffee Time on Sundays or in the office. Optional, but helpful, are The Daniel Plan Journal ($10) and The Daniel Plan - 40 Days to a Healthier Life ($15.) Both are available at www.DanielPlan.com or most places that sell books.

You can help us raise money for our out-reach projects by bringing in your paper (catalogs, newspapers, magazines, and

cardboard; BOXES MUST BE BROKEN DOWN). Place in the big recycle bin at the back of the parking lot. We can feel good about recycling and know we are helping missions as well.
