Welcome to the newly renovated and expanded Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center! We have added 3 new rooms

to the Senior Center with our 2,000 square foot expansion: a billiards room with 2 new pool tables, an exercise

Mr. Charisma- Camron Robertson, aka Mr. Charisma, will be here to entertain us with songs from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, Buddy Holly, and much more. This popular performer has been called a 'young man with an old soul' and his talent is sure to impress! Join us on Monday, January 13th from 1 2:30-1:30.

January Movie: The Greatest Showman Inspired by the true life story of the creator of the Barnum & Bailey circus. Phineas Taylor 'P.T.' Barnum is a driven and imaginative 19th-century entrepreneur. After his museum fails, he creates what will become the Greatest Show on Earth, with a ragtag troupe of performers, oddities, and animals. Starring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron and Michelle Williams. To be shown on Friday, January 31st at 1 2:30.

Winter Weather Preparedness- James Krempel from the Office of Emergency Management will be here to talk about tips to prepare you for a potentially hazardous winter. Topics include handling power outages, winter fire safety, and winter weather and health hazards. Presentation will be held on Monday, January 27th at 10:30.

Potbelly Special Meal! Thursday, January 23rd at noon. Menu includes salami, angus roast beef, oven roasted turkey, hickory ham and melted swiss cheese sand-wich, macaroni salad and chips. Sign up with the nutrition desk by Janu-ary 15th.

Join us for a Super Bowl party that’s sure to be a blast! Thursday, January 30th from 11:00-1:00.Trivia, games, 50/50 raffle and a special meal from Mission BBQ. Menu includes choice of sliced brisket or pulled pork, slider roll, mac ‘n cheese, baked beans, smashed potatoes, cookie or brownie, and lemonade or iced tea. Sign up at the front desk by Friday, January 24th. There is no fee!

Taxi Voucher Program Outreach- Bay Ellis, Taxi Voucher Coordinator with the Department of Aging & Disa-bilities, will be available on Thursday, January 16th from 1 0:30-11:30 to as-sist seniors with applications for the Taxi Voucher program and answer any questions about this valuable service. Information and Assistance- English Harper, an I&A Specialist, will be at the center on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 9:30-11:30 to visit with center members, provide educa-tion on department and county ser-vices, and provide referrals as needed. If you are in need of services or have questions, contact I&A at 410-222-4257 to make an appointment. Exercise Equipment Room- Anyone wishing to use the equipment MUST first attend a FREE one-time safety orientation session. January orientation dates are: Monday, January 13th from 10-11 & Wednesday, January 22nd from 11-12. Sign up for the orientation

at the front desk. Mem-bers are also required to sign in each time before using the exercise equip-ment.

Brooklyn Park Seniors, Inc.– This non-profit organization’s mission is to supplement the county budget for the programs, services and activities of-fered at the Brooklyn Park Senior Cen-ter. The Brooklyn Park Seniors, Inc. meets the first Monday of every month at 10:00 a.m. Meetings are open to all center members.

Coming in February… Meals on Wheels- Julie Hollander, Senior Director of Volunteer Services for Meals on Wheels, will be at the center on Tuesday, February 4th from 10:30-11:30. Julie will speak about the various volunteer opportunities and services Meals on Wheels can provide. Dave Miceli– Dave will be performing timeless oldies and some of your favorite DooWop hits on Monday, February 10th, from 1 2:00-1:30. Living Well with Chronic Conditions– This FREE 6-week Chronic Disease Self-Management Program helps those who have been diagnosed with chronic health issues such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, depres-sion, or any other physical or mental health conditions. This workshop teaches participants the self-management skills of action planning, problem solving and decision making. In addition, participants will learn about healthy eating, suggested modes of exercise, and how to manage stress levels. This workshop will meet from February 25– March 31, from 9:30-12:00. Call 410-222-4368 to register. Harry Evans– This one-man band will be performing for us on his steel gui-tar! Come listen to Harry perform hits from country, blues, Motown and old-ies. Thursday, February 27th from 12-1:30.

Taxi Voucher Program– The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities Taxi Voucher Program offers discounted taxi vouchers to support taxi fares with participating cab companies in Anne Arundel Coun-ty. In order to qualify, one must be an Anne Arundel County resident, 65 years of age or older or 18 years of age or older with a disability. Each book costs $5.00 and is worth a value of $10.00. Limitations may apply. For details regarding the program, call 410-222-4222. State Health Insurance Program (SHIP)- A trained volunteer from the Department of Aging & Disabilities SHIP program is available to discuss your questions about Medicare and Medicaid, long term care insurance, supplemental health insurance, medical claims management and more. Call 410-222-4257 to schedule an appoint-ment with a SHIP counselor. AA County Police Liaison- Corporal Megan Ott can help seniors with community issues, complaints, safety concerns, etc. Call 410-222-2447 for assistance. Grief Counseling– Available for any in-terested Anne Arundel County senior who is experiencing a difficult time with loss. Call Beth Mucciacciaro, RN Grief Counselor, at 410-222-0263 to inquire about individual help or group support. Public Use PC– The center has 1 com-puter available for use during normal center hours. Please limit your use if someone if waiting.

Transportation- The Anne Arundel County Office of Transportation pro-vides rides to seniors and individuals with disabilities to senior centers, nu-trition sites, medical appointments and for other needs. Wheelchair vans are available. Advance reservations are re-quired. To schedule transportation, call 410-222-0022. There is no fee for this service, but donations are appreciated. To apply for this service please visit www.aacounty.org/transportation for instructions and to download the Para-transit application. Senior Nutrition Program- Meals are served at the center Monday-Friday at noon. Call the Nutrition Program at 410-222-6869 from 9:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. to reserve a meal. Reservations are re-quired for meals, and should be made one week in advance. Cancellations should be made as soon as possible. Each meal costs the County $4.25 to provide. Anyone age 60 and over may make a donation towards the cost of the meal. Anyone under age 60 must pay the full cost of the meal. See p. 8 & 9 for the monthly menus. Wi-Fi Service- Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the center. AAC-Guest is the account name; no password neces-sary. Maryland Access Point (MAP)- This service is provided by the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disa-bilities. MAP is the "one stop shop" for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers to both private and public re-sources. An Options Counselor is availa-ble to help you access resources. Touch Screen Sign In- It is extremely important that you scan your key tag and “touch” the activities that you plan to attend each day you enter the center, and then hit ‘press when completed’. If you do not have a key tag, see a staff member and one will be issued. Keep-ing accurate data about center usage is crucial to providing support to any building and programming requests for the center. It is also important that we keep track of not only the num-ber of individuals coming into the cen-ter, but also what activities people are participating in.

Senior Center Eligibility Guidelines- Anne Arundel County Senior Activity Centers offer free memberships to individuals age 55 and older who are active, self sufficient and able to function independently. Your key tag allows participation at any of the seven senior centers in the county. Please remember to update your membership form each year. For more information, visit your local senior center to obtain orientation materials and take a tour. Adults age 55 and older who need assistance with daily living activities, or their caregivers, should contact Infor-mation and Assistance at 410-222-4257 to learn more about alterna-tives to Senior Activity Centers.

Inclement weather policy: - Announcements regarding AA County Senior Activity Center delays or closings due to inclement weather are made on local TV and

radio stations and the Department website. - When AA County Government offic-es are closed due to inclement weath-er, Senior Centers will be closed. - When AA County Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather, Senior Centers will be closed and all activities will be cancelled. All AA County Department of Transportation services, with the exception of dialy-sis appointments, will be cancelled. - If schools open two hours late due to inclement weather, Senior Centers will open at 10:00 am. Transportation to the Centers, lunch at all Centers and Nutrition Sites and Senior Cen-ter Plus are cancelled. Classes with start times prior to 10:00 will be can-celled. Classes that begin at 10:00 or later will be held as scheduled. - If schools close early for inclement weather, lunch will be served and the Senior Centers will close at 1 pm. Classes that begin at 1:00 or after will be cancelled. Vans will depart the Senior Centers early. - If there is inclement weather and the AA County Public Schools have a regularly scheduled closure, the AA County Department of Aging & Disa-bilities will make a determination about Senior Center closures, Trans-portation and Nutrition based on weather conditions and safety.

Emergency Evacuation Procedure- Should it become necessary to evac-uate the building, members should stay calm and exit the building as quickly as possible through the near-est exit. There are marked emergen-cy exits throughout the building. Please take note of the emergency exit nearest your location. Do not stop to gather personal belongings, and assist any individual that may need assistance in evacuating. Pro-ceed outside to the far right side of the fence, at the ‘Assembly Area’ sign. Do not re-enter the building for any reason until notified by designat-ed staff or emergency personnel that it is safe to go back into the building. As a reminder, the senior center experiences mandatory fire drills throughout the year. Thank you for your cooperation.

The AARP tax aide program will not be located at the Brooklyn Park Senior Center this year. Seniors can receive assistance through this program at the Brooklyn Park li-brary. Trained volunteers will be available to answer tax questions and assist with tax preparation on Mondays, February 3 – April 13 from 9 am - noon. This service is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center

Anne Arundel Community College Classes- Registration occurs 4 times per year, and most classes run for 10 weeks. There is an administra-tive fee of $80 for seniors age 60 and over. For ages 55 to 60, the cost is $40 per class plus an $80 adminis-trative fee. Spring classes start on April 6th, and registration begins February 13th. Spring classes in-clude Tai Chi, Zumba, Aerobics, Arm-chair Exercise, Google Tools and Chi-nese Brush Painting.

We need updated member information forms! Please stop by the front desk and complete a membership form, to en-sure we have accurate and up-to-date contact information. This is vital when an emergency occurs and an emergency contact must be notified. Volunteer Opportunities- We are cur-rently in need of several volunteers at Brooklyn Park! We need volunteers to help serve lunch, assist with the snack bar, call Bingo, help with parties & spe-cial events, and teach workshops. Please see staff if interested. Have you always wanted to learn how to line dance? The center now offers a beginning line dance class every Tues-day from 10-11. Come join us for this free class and learn some new moves!
