President’s Corner
2018 is right around the corner. And with the new year we reflect on the past year as well as think about what is to come in the new year. As I think about my 2017 quilting journey, I am pleased with my pro-gress. This past year I joined 2 different quilt guilds, pieced 5 quilts, quilted 2 of the 5 quilts, contributed to 4 charity quilts, and taught a quilting class. So what about 2018? Did you know that be-sides the most common resolutions of exercising more, losing weight, and eating healthier, one of the top 5 resolutions is learning a new skill or hobby? What does that mean for us quilters? Well, besides learning some new quilting skills, one of the things that I am doing in 2018 is entering a quilt into my first quilt show. It is not a very compli-cated quilt, but it is one of the best ones that I have done. I don’t expect to win any sort of ribbon, but I am looking forward to getting feedback from the judges. Will they like my color choices? What about the bind-ing which is hand-stitched? What other comments may they have? It is a little nerve-racking, but exciting as well. So, I guess what I am saying to our newer quilters is …Take the risk! Put one (or more) of your quilts into our February quilt show. We are all on this quilting journey together. Happy New Year!
Alison Parks
We meet on the first Monday of each month at the Salvation Army, 5328 24th Street E, just off SR70 west of 301 in Bradenton, FL. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. A $3 donation is appreciated
from non-members visiting Guild meetings when we have outside speakers.
January 8 Meeting Please note that our January meeting is on the second Monday, since New Year’s Day falls on the first. This meeting will be devoted to quilt-show preparation, informa-tion, and updates. We hope to fill all our vol-unteer time slots for the show. In addition, we’ll be looking for all your last-minute quilt entries—and hope you’ve already emailed Carol Lipp at [email protected] with as much preliminary information as possible about your entries! As this newsletter is being prepared, we have just over sixty, but need many more—our last show had over 150! Our deadlines unfortunately are earlier this time than in the past and conflicted with holiday activities. The good thing about our early show is that there are few other shows that weekend anywhere in Florida, which we hope will boost our attendance numbers, and we have a nice mix of vendors. So get those entries prepared! Our January library display will be held at the Central Library. Bring your quilts on January 2 at 10:00 and pick them up on January 31. Sandi Routhier can provide more information, [email protected].

Minutes of the December 4 Guild Meeting President Alison Parks opened the meeting. Alison reminded members that Ruth will be stepping down as VP and we need a replacement. The Minutes were approved as read. Vice President Report – Ruth Baggs – Programs for February, March and April will be updated soon on the website. Three people finished their PHDs: Sheila Walker, Janice Dentler and Sandi Routhier. Janice won the award to have a quilt long armed. Carol Lipp gave the Quilt Show report. The most important part now is getting enough volunteers. Carol Malone is the chair of the volunteer committee. Please consider signing up for a shift. Quilt Show entries are due by December 30th. Mary added that we want to see quilts from everyone! The form can be emailed. Only a simple picture is needed as it is simply used to identify the quilt. Turn in date for quilts is January 27th. Carol also gave a report on membership. Please remember it is time to renew memberships. Our Decem-ber visitors are Bill and Anna along with several new mem-bers. There were 49 members in attendance. Rose Ryan and Janice Dentler gave the Community Service report. There will not be a community service meeting on the third Friday of the month for December. Rose thanked members for their participation on the quilts. There will be a group meeting at the Salvation Army tomorrow. Last month we did 30 cat mats and 55 dog beds. Rose reminded members to save washable scraps to be used for stuffing the dog beds. Sandi Routhier will be leading the Library Display. Please bring your quilted items (non-Christmas). The dis-play is January 2nd to January 31st. Items for the quilt show cannot be included since the dates will overlap. When Sandy has a definite time, members will be informed by email. Drop off on Jan 2nd and pick up on Jan 31st. Jann Warfield invited members to attend a Friend-
ship Knot class presented by Deb Karasik. The member
price is offered to our guild - $40. Turning a New Leaf is a
class on paper piecing that will be Saturday, January 13th
followed by a more advanced class on Monday, January
15th.

Community Service We meet to make dog and cat mats the Tuesday after the guild meeting at the Humane Society on 14th Street W. at 10 am. We meet to work on quilts on the third Friday of the month at the Salvation Army at 10 am. Please come join us for quilting and fun while making a difference for our community. We support organizations like the Salvation Army, Guardians ad litem, Humane Society, and Hope Family Services. In December we were able to donate non-perishable food items to the Salvation Army as well as fourteen tote bags filled with hygiene items for women without children who depend on the Salva-tion Army. The group working on dog beds and cat mats at the Humane Society ask that you donate only the following items: Washable fabric of any fiber con-tent and batting scraps. Fabric does not have to be cut. The dog beds get wet and washed often. Please do not give us anything with staples or clips, like bras, denim, drapes, or elastic. They do not work well in the dog beds. We do not want the dog beds to be too heavy or have any sharps that may hurt the dogs. Again, the committee thanks you for all you do. For the number of members we have, we do an amazing job! If you have any questions, contact Janice Dentler at [email protected] or Rose Ryan at [email protected].
We need a cottage-group coordinator. Contact any board member for information or to volunteer!
Cottage groups mean fellowship, friendship, and accomplishment! We would like to encourage our snow-
bird members to form a cottage group which will meet during the fall and winter months, so contact Alison Parks if you’d like to be a part of that group! Your cottage group should be mostly members but can
include others—think of it as a recruiting tool!

the second and fourth Fridays at 10:00 am. Please contact Sheila Walker, 730-6735, or Rose Ryan,

Signup sheets will be out at the Janu-ary meeting for volunteer time slots at the quilt show . We need the help of every member for a successful show, so peruse the signup sheets and decide what suits your abilities and available time. Most of the shifts will be for two hours. Plan a full day (or two!) at the quilt show around volunteer stints, shopping, and viewing the quilts. We welcome your suggestions for more busi-nesses that we can contact who might be in-terested in vending at our show. Let Carol Lipp know at [email protected]. See the current vendor list at right, but it would be nice to have more!
Our 2018 quilt show will be held at the Bradenton Area Convention Center on Friday and Saturday, February 2 & 3, with setup day on Thursday, February 1. We will need the help of every member to have a successful show, and lots of
beautiful quilts! So consider what you will do to make this the best show ever. Keep in mind that this is Manatee
Patchworkers’ only major fundraiser and only every two years!
You can pick up your tickets for our beautiful opportunity quilt at a guild meeting, or
contact Susan Fickey at [email protected] for your tickets to our fabulous quilt!
Vendor Tenders Needed! How would you like to be a “vendor tender” at the
quilt show? You can help vendors by bringing coffee or water or lunch or performing other tasks which allow them to stay with their booths and
make the most of their time. Jann Warfield has volun-teered for Friday, but we still need more help for both days! If this sounds like the job for you, you can get in touch with Carol Lipp at [email protected] and let
her know. We also need someone to help with continu-ing contacts with our vendors—an important job you
can do from home! Contact Carol for info.

Consignments Randy Carman and Robin Adorna will be
manning our consignment booth at the show and hope to have lots of things for sale. The
consignment form is available on our website on the 2018 quilt-show page, and the guild only
gets 10%, so this is an opportunity to get plenty of exposure for items you’d like to sell!
13
We’re hoping for lots of beautiful quilts in our show. Are you working on yours?
Entry forms are available to download—as many as you need—from our
website, www.manateepatchworkers.org. We encourage lots of entries, and entries
should be in by the end of December, but if you email Carol Lipp at
[email protected] with your info, you can turn in your entries at the January
meeting. Carol is working on the layout for the show and needs your quilt info as soon
as possible!
We Still Need Batiks!
The batik basket is always the most
popular offering in the Basket Promenade at
the show. If each member brings two batik
fat quarters for that basket, it will be
Irresistible! So bring your batik
donations to a guild meeting and leave with
Carol Lipp or Alison Parks and we’ll have an
overflowing basket!
Basket Promenade We need donations for our Basket Promenade! Quilt-related items are great, but there are lots of other pos-sibilities—wine, chocolate,
specialty food items, baby, gift certifi-cates for restaurants or other businesses, crafts of many kinds, fabric collections
for quilters, etc., etc. Use your imagina-tion! Contact Alison Parks for informa-tion or to give her your ideas or offer
your help.
Your Tickets Are Ready! Pick up your opportunity-quilt tickets from Susan Fickey at guild meetings. We’re asking that each
member buy or sell twenty tickets to help us succeed with our major fundraising event, our every-
other-year quilt show!
SUPPORT THE SILENT AUCTION! Nancy Luse and Irene Bowersock would like to remind members that there is still time
to make a wonderful small quilt for the silent auction. This is a major fundraiser at
the show, and donations have been coming in slowly. Take a look through your
unfinished projects, plan something eyecatching, or find something you can bear to
part with to donate! There are no restrictions on size, but it’s nice to be able to
display lots of smaller items to encourage plenty of bids. What about a set of blocks,
a purse or tote, or something “gifty” you’ve made in a workshop? Bring your dona-
tion to our January meeting, or contact Irene or Nancy at
[email protected] or [email protected].
They will welcome your donation until setup day.

Suncoast Sights
2018 Suncoast Quilt Expo Challenge
Do you have a favorite sight along the Suncoast?
Why not take a photo and turn it into a challenge
quilt for our 2018 show! The requirements are
few—it must have three layers and be quilted,
and should have a total perimeter measurement
of no more than 96 inches. You don’t need a
sleeve, and you can embellish and/or thread-paint
as you choose. Contact Mary Lewis if you have
questions at [email protected].
Download the entry form from

willing to greet people as they enter for meetings and direct them to where they need to go. You can be a friendly face for
newcomers and help make everything move smoothly! Contact Alison Parks at
[email protected] if this sounds like a good fit for you!
New Library Page Check out the revamped Library page on
our website. There is a link to a library list, and you can email our librarian, Ruthann McIntyre, and
request a book that you can pick up at the next meeting—we have lots of books, and Ruthann can’t put them all out for meet-ings, so take a look at the list, which will be updated regularly. More changes will
