WICHITA A’S MEETING MINUTES Minisa Park, November 27, 2017

Happy New Years!!! 2018 is here and what a great start it was for those of us who began the New Year attending the First Tour of the Year on January 1st. To say it was a bit chilly would be an understatement as it may have been the clubs coldest 1st tour to date, but as always there was good fellowship, lots of food, and a very interesting tour (this year we were introduced to the creative and thought provoking world of outdoor art). We will start the planning process for the 2018 tour and activity schedule at an upcoming meeting. There is no better way to enjoy our hobby than getting the cars out and driving them, so please plan on attending these plan-ning meetings and sharing your ideas for tours and activities that allow us to fellowship, enjoy our Model A’s and share our cars and hobby with others. The board will meet at 7PM on January 15th at the Ruggles home, this is an open meeting that all are welcome to attend, (let one of us know if you plan to attend, if 50 people show up it might be a little tight in Dawna’s living room) or if you have something you would like the board to discuss let me know and I will add it to the agenda. Best Regards, Randy Frazer, President

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

A huge thank you to Linda Kibbe for being the Wichita A’s editor for so many years. Linda has spent a lot of time and effort in getting the newsletter to all the members of the Model A group and keeping everyone posted on what is going on with our members and events that are happening. With that said, I have big shoes to fill, but will do my best. Be patient, I am still learning! Thanks to all members for all their planning and efforts! Let’s go forward and have a great New Year in 2018!!! Sheila Orr, Editor

Robert “Bo” McHenry, 80, passed away on Nov. 28th. “Bo” has been a club member for about 50 years. He is survived by his wife, Pat, 6 children plus grandchildren, siblings and other relatives. “Bo” had a very successful business in South Derby, The Spring Creek Tree Care and Landscaping business. He purchased his first Model A in 1957, and Early 28 Roadster which he still has. He and Pat purchased a 29 Fordor a few years ago. “Bo’s” funeral was held at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Derby. The family encouraged members to drive their Model A’s to the service and at least 25 did. “Bo’s” cars were there and the Model A’s led the procession to the cemetery.

Mervyn Criser, 83, another long time member passed away on Dec. 24th after a 2 1/2 year battle with cancer. Merv is survived by his wife Marcia, a daughter-in-law, a grandson, granddaughter, a half sister, nieces, nephews and cousins. After graduating from North High, Merv served in the Army for 2 years. He then joined the Wichita Fire Department, and retired 20 years later as a Lieuten-ant. Merv also owned Air Capital Vending and Criser Development. Merv was a founding member of the Kansas Firefighters Museum and a found-ing member of the Archives of the Wichita Fire Department. In 2002 Merv asked the Wichita A’s to help restore a 29 Model A Fire Truck, to be exhibited at the Fire Fighters Museum. With Merv’s leadership and coordi-nation the project was completed in a few months and was a shining example of his meticulous passion for detail and excellence. This trait was reflected in his

Also, some of you may remember, Jim Gooch, a very active member of the A-Birds from 1966-1980. In 1980 Jim and his family moved to Mission, Texas. Jim passed away on Dec. 17, at the age of 84. In 1970, Jim and member Larry Andra, now deceased, along with Jim’s father Hugh, his son ,a nephew and Larry’s son drove their Model A Fords to Mexico City and on to Acapulco. This was a 4400 mile Model A driving trip, not a vaca-tion. They completed the journey in less than 2 weeks with only a couple of flat tires and 7 quarts of oil. Acapulco is 270 miles beyond Mexico City. The trip was documented in The Wichita Eagle on April 26, 1970, and later in The Re-storer magazine.

MODEL A CHRISTMAS PARTY

On December 2, forty eight club members arrived at Minisa Park with food and gifts in tow. After setting up tables and chairs we enjoyed good fellowship and the spectacular array of foods provided by our outstanding cooks. The club provid-ed the turkey and ham which Linda Kibbe roasted to perfec-tion. It was a feast to remember! In lieu of entertainment, we exchanged and opened gifts. Only one of our famous horses made it to the luncheon this year and Helen Louise Beaver took “Miss Pink” home to care for until next time. Thanks to everyone who helped with this event. If you prefer this type of Christmas Party or have a different idea, let your board members know. Thanks, also, to whoever left the marvelous cranberry salad that I got to take home and enjoy. I want that recipe! Please share.-Dawna Ruggles

Our lunch was attended by 29 ladies, including 5 guests. Our aim was to help newborn babies and small tots of needy families through Birthline, a charity operated by volunteers. The charity receives a lot of their requests for children’s cloth-ing from area hospitals. Our members and guests outdid themselves by donating everything from diapers (lots of them) to outfits to tiny socks and sleepers. Several ladies even brought homemade items such as beautiful warm blankets, bibs, etc. Thanks to John Stone for helping us completely stuff Bonita‘s trunk and back seat with all the donations. We had asked for one donated item but we think every single lady doubled or tripled their donation. Thank you all for being so generous! Our table decorations were lots and lots of little Santa Clauses purchased at a garage sale. A lady had been a collector of Santa’s for years and was selling them for a quarter each. What a find with great timing! Each lady picked one Santa to take home. Our caterer did an excellent job of preparing and serving our luncheon. Thanks to Susan for arranging for us to use their church’s facility for our luncheon. Thanks to all who attended! Rita Hoffman

New Year’s Day-First Tour of 2018

If you did not make the first tour for 2018, you missed a beautiful sun shiny day! We had 28 members and 19 model A’s. On the tour we had a leisurely drive through downtown Wichita to look at 15 works of art on various buildings. The nice things about this tour we could look at all the art without getting out of our car because the temperature was only 4 degrees when we started! Don Gra-bendike

WATER VS ANTIFREEZE IN THE SUMMER

WATER VS. ANTI-FREEZE IN THE SUMMER – John Stone This is a thread from Fordbarn.com. The initial question was “I’m thinking about running straight water in my ford radi-ator. Anyone had any experience with a good rust prevented to add to the water to prevent rust in the block?” The best answer came from a teacher in Maine: “A marginal cooling system may benefit from running straight water. However, the absence of rust inhibiters may eventually cause enough restriction in water passages to outweigh the benefits of running straight water. Here's what an internet site has to say: The specific heat of water is 1 calorie/gram °C = 4.186 joule/gram °C which is higher than any other common substance. The specific heat of a 50/50 water/ethylene glycol solution is 0.85 joule/gram C. The specific heat capacity of ethylene glycol based water solutions are less than the specific heat capacity of clean water. For a heat transfer system with ethylene glycol the circulated volume must be increased compared to a system with clean water. In a 50% solution with operational temperatures above 36 degrees F the specific heat capacity is decreased by approximately 20%. The reduced heat capacity must be compensated by circulating more fluid.” This was a comment on his statements above: “I may be mistaken but I am fairly certain antifreeze raises the boiling point at normal atmospheric pressure substan-tially to something around 230-245F. Pressurizing the system also raises it even higher to around 260F.” His response: “You are absolutely correct. But the difference in specific heat value between water that boils at a lower temperature and the specific heat value of a 50/50 mix that might boil at a higher temperature cancels out any benefit as far as heat transfer is con-cerned. In English, even though a 50/50 mix might boil at a higher temperature, an equal volume of straight water absorbs much more heat at a lower temperature than the same volume 50/50 mix can at a higher temperature. Therefore straight water is a superior cooling medium regardless of temperature in non-pressurized systems. No rust protection though. Remember, temperature and heat are two very different things. Overheating is caused by heat, not by temperature. Modern cooling sys-tems run fine way above 212 degrees and cause no overheating problems. Your Model A cooling system will overheat and fail at or below 212 degrees. Temperature is not the cause of overheating. Excess heat is! You need a modern, pressurized cooling system to take advantage of the higher boiling point of a 50/50 mix. In a Model A, the engine will overheat faster with a 50/50 mix. It takes less heat to get that mix to its higher boiling point, than it takes to get straight water to its lower boiling point giv-en equal volumes of liquid.” The final conclusion would be it is best to run straight water with ant-rust rather than anti-freeze in the summer especially if your cooling system is marginal.
