I have come to view our Airstream vehicles as merely hunks of aluminum (although expensive hunks of aluminum) that serve only as the front and back covers of a book. The important story about our Club is written between those covers; it is where everything of significance occurs; it is where we actually live and where the human interactions that add those measures of richness to our lives take place. That story has been pretty dynamic. Since 2013, we have increased our membership 179% with the 16 new members joining in 2016 (our greatest single year of increase). The process is called growth, and it is completely value neutral, earning the handle of good or bad depending on how it is managed and developed. This growth has left me with a significant knowledge deficit about the people living between the covers of this book. I don’t know how many of you work or are retired; what you may consider a reasonable distance to travel for a weekend rally; or what rally venues you may prefer. To learn more, we are working on a survey which will ask you to provide this and other information. A first draft has been prepared and will be finalized shortly. PRESIDENT’S CORNER

By Robert Kirkpatrick

Greetings to All,

After just coming from a very fine January rally at the Pechanga RV Resort, I would like to invite you all to join me in the rather unconventional view of our Airstream Club.

Once released, complete control of how useful this effort proves to be passes to you. I hope that you will respond with enthusiasm for the purpose of keeping the real story existing between those expensive aluminum book covers as dynamic and satisfying as it was at Pechanga.

By now you may have heard that we are in a search for a new Membership Chair and a new Recording Secretary to assume these responsibilities at year’s end. If you would be interested, or would like a copy of the job descriptions, please contact me. I have already had some serious interest expressed in the Membership Chair position (for which I am most grateful).

As a last point, I want to address rally attendance cancellations. Since the formation of our Club in 1968, we, like other similar organizations, have had to deal with this issue. Our Club members have a very good track record in this area and the President and Treasurer have adequate authorizations and tools to handle issues as they arise. Usually, for us, this is a slight irritation, but no big deal. HOWEVER, where the issue can have critical impact is with the hosting team. For each rally, they do the heavy lifting. A cancellation after the food assignments have been made can be critical if unknown to them. Last minute cancellations are a particular burden. During our 7 January Executive Board Meeting, we decided to ask your help with this since we have had late cancellations occur several times. Our request is that if you must cancel, please make a phone call to the Host. I think you all can see how useful this could be especially if the hosting team has already left for the rally site (sometimes even a day early). An email to the President is always appropriate, but we think the extra courtesy to the Host will have big payoffs. You will hear me mentioning this frequent-ly.

Thank you for your patience reading this and for your support. Karen and I hope to see you all at the next rally.

Warm Regards,

Bob K.

MEETING MINUTES

January 7, 2017

General Meeting Minutes

Attendees: Barefoot, Bruce & Marya; Bowman, Marlene; Carmichael, Steve & Jane; Cram, Dale & Susan; Crowe, Ray

& Billie; Frauenzimmer, Richard & Mary; Gingerich, Edith; Johnson, Scott & Dawn; Kirkpatrick, Bob; Koblick, Tane &

Linda; Lasswell, Ron & Lisa; Miller, Mark & Connie; Roybal, Bob & Jan; Sommerville, Tim & Diane; Spence, Larry &

Clara; Stapleton, Nora; Terhorst, Phil & Lynda; Visnic, Chuck & Linda.

President Bob Kirkpatrick called the meeting to order after dinner.

He presented a proposal which had been suggested at the Executive Board meeting earlier in the day. The proposal

is that the procedure of reimbursing the rally Hosts $10 per rig be stopped. There was concern about adequate

reimbursement for the Hosts. Therefore, instead, the hosts for each rally would present their receipts for expenses to

the Treasurer, and the Hosts would be reimbursed for their total expenses. This was unanimously approved by the

members.

Bob will be looking for a new Membership Chair and Recording Secretary for 2018, and he will be placing an

announcement regarding this in the newsletter.

Respectfully submitted,

Jane Carmichael,

Recording Secretary

A Note From Your Treasurer

As noted in the Minutes above, there has been a change to our club procedure for re-

imbursing our hos.ng teams. It was felt hosts were o:en spending out of pocket funds

for some of the excellent entrée dishes we have recently been served and other serv-

ing items that exceeded the amount of reimbursement received under the old sys-

tem. To correct this and to recognize the heavy li:ing that hos.ng teams do to make

our rallies so enjoyable, the Board recommended and the membership approved a

receipt based reimbursement plan. Addi.onally, the hosts will con.nue to only be

responsible to pay the cost of their RV site, but not the addi.onal rally fee.

We have been experimen.ng with a receipt system for some .me and have been

pleased with both the reasonableness and posi.ve response the approach has generat-

ed. A funding cap has not been established. We hope that one will not be neces-

sary. Your board will watch this carefully.

Dale Cram, Treasurer

The weather at Pechanga was surprisingly beautiful, but on the nippy side, until Sunday evening. Those of

us who stayed an extra day got a dose of rain into our departure. As you can see above, we had a large

number of first-time rally attendees, and it made for a memorable and fun weekend getting to know

everyone. We thoroughly enjoyed the company of all those who attended, and hope to see them at more

rallies in the future.

The clubhouse was just the right size for our 50-something gang. Saturday night had Bob and Cecelia

Stansbury from Region 12 visiting us for our Happy Hour and dinner, and the picture of everyone (although

a few attendees were missing) was for the purpose of telling those who couldn’t make it that they were

missed. The two puzzles (500 and 1,000 pieces) were completed by one and all—a great team effort—with

no pieces missing. Great food (thanks to everyone who contributed), great company, and another great

rally!

Important Reminders

A. When our President sends out an announcement about a rally and asks you to respond if you wish to a6end, rally

spaces will be given priority in the following order:

1) Regular Members of Unit 019

2) Club Affiliates (members of another Club or Unit but affiliates with South Coast)

3) Guests

Therefore, even if you are the first to respond and you fall into categories 2 or 3, you may not actually secure a camp

site to one of our rallies. You could be “bumped” by a Regular Member who responds a:er you do but before the dead-

line to sign up.

B. If you are signed up for a rally but find that you must cancel for whatever reason, please contact the rally Host or Co-

Host immediately BY PHONE, as this may have an impact not only on the site spaces but also on the food assignments.

The Host or Co-Host will no.fy the President. E-mail or text is not an acceptable form of no)fica)on.

C. We are looking for Hosts and Co-Hosts for several rallies in 2017. Please step forward and assist your club with

organizing our great rallies. Partner with another couple that has experience doing this and Co-Host together. Hos.ng

opportuni.es are needed for May 5-7 (Newport Dunes) with Nora Stapleton, June 2-4 (Pala), July 7-9 (Idyllwild) with

Tim and Rebecca Mustard, October 6-8 (Emerald Desert) with Larry and Clara Spence, and November 3-5 (The Springs

at Borrego). Just call Bob Kirkpatrick to volunteer (phone and e-mail contact on first page of this newsle6er).

Written by Dale for Dale and Susan CramWritten by Dale for Dale and Susan CramWritten by Dale for Dale and Susan CramWritten by Dale for Dale and Susan Cram

We started my first full year of retirement with a threeweek Mediterranean cruise. We started out in

Venice for three days then boarded our ship in Trieste, Italy. Our ports took us to Dubrovnik, Croatia, Kotor,

Montenegro, Athens and Crete, Greece, Valletta, Malta, Palermo, Sicily, Rome, Florence/Pisa, Italy, Marseilles,

France, ending in Barcelona, Spain. We stayed in Barcelona for three days before we flew home. Great fun.

We were home for about four weeks, then loaded up the Airstream and followed our friends, Bob and Cathy

Adams, to their cottage on Prince Edward Island. On the way, we spent a night just outside the North Rim of

the Grand Canyon, drove through Monument Valley and stood on the four corner states, went to Mesa

Verde National Park and took a tour of the cliff dwellings, took the train from Durango to Silverton on the

narrow gauge railroad, went to the top of Pikes Peak, drove through the Garden of the Gods in Colorado

Springs, and took a tour of the Air Force Academy. The Cadet Chapel is beautiful and really something to see.

We saw the first Pony Express original building in Omaha, Nebraska, then spent a couple of days with

family in Wisconsin then up through Sault St. Marie and into Canada. To get to Prince Edward Island, we

had to drive on the Confederation Bridge, the longest bridge over ice covered waters in the world. It is eight

miles long and takes about 10 minutes to travel. Arriving on Prince Edward Island (PEI), we had traveled

4,300 miles. We spent a week on PEI sightseeing and ate many lobster dinners. One night, Bob cooked Paella

with fresh (not frozen) mussels, shrimp, clams, onion, and tomatoes on paella rice .

From there, we headed south through Nova Scotia, went to Fortress of Louisbourg (18th century French

fortress) on Cape Brenton, over through Maine (saw LL Beans stores), continued south through New

Hampshire, Vermont (visited a maple grove farm), stayed in Cape Cod, and took a ferry and rode bikes in

Martha’s Vineyard, spent a day in Boston and the next day, took a tour of West Point and the Purple Heart

Museum. We drove through Hershey, Pennsylvania, and Amish country, then zigzagged down the 13

original states. Along the way, we went to Gettysburg and took a tour of Annapolis Naval Academy.

We spent a week in Washington, DC where we went to Mt. Vernon, visited the Smithsonian museums, went

to Lincoln, Jefferson, and Washington Monuments and all the War memorial walls, took the subway to

Arlington National Cemetary then went to the Capital and saw the White House from afar. We took a day

and went for a tour of Monticello.

We then drove through the Blue Ridge Parkway to Asheville, North Carolina, where we took a tour of the

Biltmore Estate, the largest privately owned estate in the United States. Originally built for a bachelor, it has

65 fireplaces, indoor pool, bowling alley, 250 rooms including 33 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and three

kitchens. It has a whopping 135,926 square feet of living space. Quite impressive. When we were in

Charleston, we took a carriage ride tour of the town.

Our next week was in Orlando, Florida, where we went to Epcot, Key West, Mallory Square and the mile

zero marker. We took a swamp tour, and drove through the Everglades.

We went to the confederate POW camp in Andersonville where Susan’s great grandfather was a prisoner

after being captured at the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia. We have a copy of his diary. The POW museum

was most interesting. During the 70’s, I had a POW bracelet with the name “Major Douglas Peterson” on it.

After Vietnam, I never found out his demise until the visit to this POW camp. They showed a film at the

visitor center in which Major Peterson was interviewed about his capture, torture and release after the

Vietnam war. It was very gratifying to learn he made it home.

From Georgia we went into Alabama and up to Nashville where we went to a radio show and backstage tour

of the Grand Ole Opry, then visited the George Jones and Johnny Cash museums. the Tours included the

Ryman, the Country Music Hall of Fame Museum, and Andrew Jackson’s home. From Nashville, we crossed

Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado and took a drive through the Colorado National Monument. Our

final stop was for a few days just outside Las Vegas to visit my best friend.

Our trip lasted three and a half months, and we traveled almost 14,000 miles on twolane roads with very

few interstates (they are just too fast and the truckers are too pushy).

We have seen so many places in our beautiful country, and we have now been to all 50 states and most the

Canadian Provinces. We met and stayed with some very nice Courtesy parking members from WBCCI.

Airstreaming is nice. It fosters a lifetime of friendships and travel.

It was difficult to consolidate our trip into a version that would only tease the places we have been. Hope you

enjoyed the trip.
