In the In-Between Times
We Must Hold Hands and Stick Together

This is “our” Year of Transition.
Our priest has transitioned onward and upward. We
have been left to tend the fires he built and stoked
for us. This is our year of Transition. We must
embrace it. St. Andrew’s is more stable than it has
been in many years. We must focus on all of the
hopes and possibilities this transition offers to St.
Andrew’s. The parish needs to stand tall and
together in order for us to make our way thru what
will at times be difficult.
Father Carl lit the spiritual fire at St. Andrew’s and
tended it for four years. The fire still burns in his
absence. And St. Andrew’s fire will continue to
burn as long as we, the congregation, continue to
feed it and embrace the spirit of the Church. We
need to embrace the fact that the laity has always
been the root and backbone of our church. We have
been here thru sixty odd years and numerous Priests
and countless turmoil. We, the parishioners, are
still here.
There is an old children’s game played with the
hands. You fold your hands together, and say “here
is the church.” Then you point your index fingers
together and say, “Here is the Steeple.” Then you
roll your hands up and wiggle your fingers and say,
“open it up and see all the people.” See all the
people not see all the bishops and priests and
deacons. See all the people. The people are the
church. Not the building. Not the Priest in charge.
Not the altar or the cross but the people. Look to
the bible to see all the people who surrounded Jesus
and welcomed him into their homes. Look at the
people who carried on his commission. We need to
be those people. We need to be that kind of church.
Father Carl had some parting thoughts on our
pending Year. I thought it might be good to share
them with you.
(1) St. Andrew's should really emphasize the Year
of Transition, and all of its hopes and possibilities,
now that we are stabilized and have a new and
somewhat firm foundation to build on.
(2)The idea of minimizing differences and
highlighting our strengths as a St. Andrew's Family
should be expressed practically every Sunday. The
two Wardens should do the Sunday Announcements
every Sunday till we get a new Priest-in-Charge.
(3)Our new families and our neighbors need to hear
that we are a caring parish "family" where
everybody participates, as they are able. Their
value is not necessarily contingent upon their
attending every Sunday, but upon them believing
that St. Andrew's will meet their needs, and that
they are a part of the Family.
(4)The idea of "containing" the negative/toxic
voices is also crucial; and you do it by loving them
and making sure the positive/life-giving voices are
louder than the negative ones.
(5)The metaphor of "hold hands and stick together"
is a keeper. It appeals to people. I got it from Robert
Fulghum's book, "Everything I Needed to Know I
Learned in Kindergarten! We must learn how to
play well with others; and not over-react when
someone behaves badly. Conversely, we must
always do our best to highlight and reward good
behavior. Just like in kindergarten.
(6) Continue to use food and fellowship to rebuild
our congregation. Our folks had become so
accustomed to potlucks and paying for everything
themselves that they were at first shocked when we
had 2013 Lenten Lunches for them, each Sunday,
and for the first time they didn't have to work; they
didn't have to pay; all they had to do was come and
enjoy. I am a firm believer in "random acts of
kindness," especially from the Leaders to show our
members we value their sacrificial service to this
parish.
(7) Everybody needs to be thanked all the time for
everything, no matter how small or large.
(8)The preaching and the music! For most
worshipers, old or new, their ONLY experience of
St. Andrew's is Sunday morning! (Cont. on next page.)

We must do everything in our power to give them a
"quality product," if you'll pardon the business
language.
(9) Above all, “trust in the Lord with all your heart;
and lean not upon your own understanding. In all
ways acknowledge Him; and He will direct your
paths.” (Proverbs 2:5-6)

Illness and relocation have thinned the ranks of both our handbell and vocal choirs. Since "In the middle of every difficulty, lies opportunity" (Mr. Einstein said it, and I believe it.), now is your chance to join one of these groups and help us to glorify God with our music. See you on Wednesday evening at seven to ring and Thursday evening at seven to sing! "..be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.." Ephesians 5:18b-19
HYMN FOR THE EPIPHANY SEASON
Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus, Lord, to thee we raise, manifested by the star to the sages from afar; Branch of royal David's stem in thy birth at Bethlehem; anthems be to thee addrest, God in man made manifest. Manifest at Jordan's stream, Prophet, Priest, and King supreme; and at Cana, wedding guest, in thy Godhead manifest; manifest in power divine, changing water into wine; anthems be to thee addrest, God in man made manifest. Manifest in making whole palsied limbs and fainting soul; manifest in valiant fight, quelling all the devil's might; manifest in gracious will, ever bringing good from ill; anthems be to thee addrest, God in man made manifest. Manifest on mountain height, shining in resplendent light, where disciples filled with awe thy transfigured glory saw. When from thence thou leddest them steadfast to Jerusalem, cross and Easter day attest God in man made manifest. Grant us grace to see thee, Lord, mirrored in thy holy word; may we imitate thee now, and be pure, as pure art thou; that we like to thee may be at thy great epiphany; and may praise thee, ever blest, God in man made manifest.

Arundel House of Hope Winter Relief. To everyone who assisted with the Shelter this year, giving time, talent, treasure and/or prayer, I offer a big thank you. St. Andrews offered shelter to 26 men for a week of nights and one day. The meals were given high ratings by all who shared them. I even heard from the AHOH director that back at the day center, good things are said about St. Andrews. So thank you very much for your contributions. Do you enjoy semi-formal parties? Good food? A chance to bid on neat stuff? The AHOH Bid for Hope Live and Silent Auction Gala is Sunday February 12 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Tickets are $40.00. Please see David Richardson for more information.

CONFESSION OF PETER THE APOSTLE
(18 JAN NT) On 18 January we remember how the Apostle Peter was led by God's grace to acknowledge Jesus as the Christ (Matthew 16:13-20), and we join with Peter, and with all Christians everywhere, in hailing Jesus as our Lord, God, and Savior. PRAYER - Almighty Father, who didst inspire Simon Peter, first among the apostles, to confess Jesus as Messiah and Son of the Living God: Keep thy Church steadfast upon the rock of this faith, that in unity and peace we may proclaim the one truth and follow the one Lord, our Savior Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
THE CONVERSION OF THE APOSTLE PAUL
(JANUARY 25) On January 25 we remember how Saul (or Paul) of Tarsus, formerly an enemy and persecutor of the early Christian Church, was led by God's grace to become one of its chief spokesmen. Our chief sources of information about the Apostle Paul are several of his own letters, preserved for us in the New Testament, and the account of him given by Luke in the book of Acts. PRAYER - O God, who by the preaching of thine apostle Paul hast caused the light of the Gospel to shine throughout the world: Grant, we beseech thee, that we, having his wonderful conversion in remembrance, may show forth our thankfulness unto thee for the same by following the holy doctrine which he taught; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
