Principal’s Note
Dear Students and Parents,
Happy 2016 to you all! It is amazing that we are already half way through the
academic year. Last week, our teachers sent home the 2nd quarter report cards.
We certainly hope that all our students are performing ideally and will only get
better as we move closer to the end of the school year. I encourage you to
continue to have a ‘visible’ relationship with us so that your child will understand
that we are all in this together.
On Thursday, January 28, we started our Breakfast with the Principal series with
Kindergarten and 1st grade parents. It was phenomenal to see the parents and
discuss school life while enjoying delicious authentic breakfast. Please watch out
for upcoming announcements inviting you to come and have breakfast with us.
This new initiative is your opportunity to tell us what you would like to see
different next school year. Please, give us a bit of your time to listen to your voice.
In the upcoming months, NSS will also be hosting a number of open houses. We
have already kicked off the enrollment process by sending home re-enrollment
forms. Parents, if you have not already sent these forms back, please do so as soon
as possible.
We are working assiduously to incorporate additional programs next year. Please
recommend us to your community; your friends, and their friends too. You may
forward this link for them to easily apply:

Christina at the front office 813-933-5025.
We are looking forward to seeing all of you (except our 8th graders) back here with
us in 2016-2017!

Kindergarten Report
After a long and rejuvenating winter
break, we are back at the grind with
reading, writing, and math in
Kindergarten! The students set their own
goals for the remaining 2016 year in
Kindergarten and we as a class agreed to
get fluent in reading and writing. We have
been having fun with our text-based
readings and writing down our thoughts in
our reading journals to gain comprehension and details. The more we have exposure
and practice in writing, the better we will become!
1st Grade Report
This month in first grade has flown by!
We have been very busy learning about
our place values and counting past 120!
The kids also have been learning a lot
to get ready for Black History Month.
We really enjoyed learning and
discussing about Martin Luther King
Jr. Soon, we will be diving into
learning about movement and force in
Science. Stay warm!

2nd Grade Report
Our 2nd graders returned to school with an even
greater drive to succeed! We have talked about
using our time more wisely, and we are committed to
being respectful and nice to each other. On the
academic side, we have been exploring the realm of
geometry; practicing our paragraphing skills,
investigating the concepts of weather; and
discussing how Earth’s features help us satisfy our
needs. We have had much fun interacting with the
elements and instruments of weather! Special
thanks to Mr. Memon for having us prove that water
is present in air, and for giving us the opportunity to
interat with actual weather tools.
3rd Grade Report
Our third graders are ready for a brand new year! Students wrote about their
resolutions and explained why they have
these goals. Some popular ones (to name
a few) were: read more books and take
AR tests, practice my multiplication and
division facts more, and get straight A's.
With hard work and dedication I know
these students will complete their goals.
Some topics we are focusing on...
Reading: poetry
Mathematics: fractions
Science: different types of energy
Social Studies: English explorers
Happy New Year from third grade!
4th Grade Report
The new year has started and the
students in 4th grade are haave been
working hard to sharpen their
languange and arithmetic skills. In
Science, they focused on the different
types of rocks that make up the
Earth’s structure. They enjoyed
investigating the properties of rocks
that were igneous, sedimentary, and
metamorphic. They used their inquiry
skills to observe, research, and make comparisons between the different types of
rocks. They also used candy to make models, and demonstrate their knowledge of
rocks.
5th Grade Report
Fifth grade students have
been busy this month in math
class learning about geometry
and finding the volume of 3-D
figures. We are wrapping up
the unit and will be jumping
into the fractions
unit. Students will be adding,
subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions.
During this month's science unit on energy, students conducted a science
experiment on electric circuits. Students enjoyed checking if different objects
such as aluminum foil, a penny, a plastic spoon, an index card, and a paper clip
created a closed circuit to light up a bulb.
Some of the students were able to join the 6th graders on a trip to see the Street
Beat show for kids at the Straz Center. They certainly enjoyed the music as the
musicians played percussion using "repurposed" every day material.
Ms. Alexander’s Report
Our 8th graders are integrating technology and Language Arts!
Mr. Ates’s Turkish Class Report
Turkish Dinner Party!!!
Teaching language is not only about grammar,
reading, vocabulary but it is also about the
culture, and the food is a big part of a
culture. In order to show some samples of the
Turkish cuisine, 6th grade Turkish Class were
invited to the Turkish Dinner Party at Mr.
Ates’ house in the last week of the
1st semester. It was a huge event! In total, 19
students joined us to taste delicious Turkish
food. We also had some parents who got the same opportunity and they didn’t miss the
chance . It was very nice to hear some offers/advice from our guests. These included:
“Open a cooking class”; “Invite us again”; “Teach me how to cook like this”. Well, good news!
Your advice will be considered soon. Thanks to everyone who made this great event happen!
Mr. Ak’s MOSI Field Trip Report
This month, we went on an exciting field trip to
MOSI with 8th
graders. They all loved watching
‘the mystery of the unseen world’ on IMAX and
experiencing natural disasters like hurricanes,
earthquakes, and tornadoes.
They rode in the Meridian Shuttle, an autonomous
vehicle that is 100% driverless and electric. They
enjoyed MOSI's new Drone Zone where you can
fly, drive and dive commercial drones in the air, on
land and underwater!
