Message from our Administrators
Welcome back!
We hope that you have had a safe and restful holiday!
Our board’s Parent/Guardian School Climate Survey 2013-14 was completed by our families at the beginning of June 2014. We will be sharing the results of this survey with our School Council on Thursday January 29th from 6:30 to 7:30. This survey gives us some very important information about how you feel about the school’s expectations about safety, your engagement, how inviting you feel the school is, opportunities, student well-being, and provides data about what you expect from us in the future. Overall it seems to be consistent with the Report Card information our families filled out for us in June except this survey goes deeper and gives us some things to think about.
December was another busy month for us @Aldergroveps. On Thursday December 4th the Aldergrove Choir performed on the Grand staircase of the Ontario Legislature. MPP for Markham-Unionville Michael Chan took the time to come and see our school perform having visited our school last school year. The choir was led by 歌詠团各主導老師 Katherine Sametz, accompanied by Ms. Roumbanis, and Ms. Jackson performed as a part of the choir. Our Gingerbread Workshop was a huge success bringing in over 200 families and over 500 people. We greatly appreciate all of the assistance we received from our teachers who organized and prepared for this event. 薑餅屋活動老師 Thank you Ms. Riley, Ms. Schmid, Ms. Anderson, Mr. Berberick, Ms. Kaura, Ms. Tohn, Ms. Baig, Mr. Frankfort, Ms. Yuen, Ms. Atkins, Ms. Wright, Ms. Luu, Ms. Rasool, Ms Joshua, Ms. Carey, Ms. Hopper, Ms Chandy, Mr. Dark, Ms. Rajan, Ms. Pothacamuri, Ms. Kizilbash and Mr. Sun. Thank you 聖誕音樂晚会老師 Mr. Dark, Mr. Bergerson, Ms. De Silva, Mr. Bereznick, Ms. Rasool, Ms. Riley, Mr. Frankfort and Ms. Sametz for all of the efforts in making this production a great success! We also had town halls for our students from Gr 1-8 to get feedback from them about their thoughts and School Improvement Planning sessions where we asked students to give us feedback about our School Plan for 2014-15. A huge thank you goes to board researcher, Scott Milne, for his support and all the teacher candidates who helped.

Intermediate Boys’ Volleyball
On Tuesday, Nov. 25th
the Intermediate Boys’
Volleyball Team attended the area
tournament at Armadale P.S. With our
confidence and spirits high, we came
ready to play but were thrown off by
the new environment: the court
seemed smaller, the net was higher,
the ball bouncier. We ended up losing
our first two games, but not by much.
Our turnaround came when Jordan
gave them a taste of our “solar beam”
serve, which caught the attention of
everyone on the court and meant we
shouldn’t be overlooked or
underestimated yet. Then everything
seemed to fall into place.
True to our mascot the Phoenix, we
“rose from the ashes” and snatched
victory for our next two games.
Suddenly we were tied for a spot to
play in the semi-final match! In our
last game, we battled furiously and the
team had never been in more sync.
The rallies were long and the points
crept ever slowly for both sides. But in
the end, we were eventually defeated
by the closest of hairs.
We want to congratulate and thank the
team on their valiant efforts and high
enthusiasm. Their lighthearted and
fun-loving natures never dampened
once, even after we had lost some
games and demonstrated true
Aldergrove spirit throughout the
whole tournament. They never gave
up and fought to the very end. As
coaches, we couldn’t have asked for
more passionate and hardworking
members and we are so very proud of
each and every one of them.
Great season boys!

On severe weather days with
extreme wind chill temperatures (-
15 C or lower), we use our
judgment along with an alert from
Environment Canada to bring all
students into the building early or
use indoor recess routines.
We often receive requests from
parents asking us to keep their
children indoors during recess
times because they are not feeling
well. Unfortunately,
we do not have the staff or
facilities to supervise students who
are sick or still recovering from an
illness. Students who are ill should
remain at home until their
condition improves. This will
benefit the students concerned and
prevent the spread of illness to
others.
Information sessions for the French Immersion (FI) program will take place at Coppard Glen PS on January 15, 2015 at 7 p.m. FI registration starts January 16 to February 13. WE Create Change
During the month of November
the me2we club organized the "WE Create Change" Campaign that was designed to collect change from our staff and students in order to buy goats for a village in India. The goats had numerous purposes, most notably for their milk and nourishment but also as an extra income for the families to allow the young children of these families to attend school rather than stay at home and work.
Our goal as a school was to raise enough money to buy 10 goats. At the end of the campaign our school raised a grand total of $650.07 which was enough to purchase 13 goats!!! Well done Aldergrove!!!!!

Intermediate Girls Volleyball
On Wednesday, November 26th the
Aldergrove Phoenix Intermediate Girls Volleyball Team traveled to Armadale PS to compete in the annual Area Tournament. The girls were in a tough pool but every player showed up and played hard.
We did not advance in the tournament but we were known as the team that had the most spirit and fun! The coaches were very proud of the girls for their commitment to learning the sport and also how well they stuck together as a team.

Did you know that a can (355 ml) of pop has nine teaspoons of sugar and a bottle (474 ml) of ‘fruit drink’ can have 18 teaspoons of sugar? Even a container (250 ml) of chocolate milk has four teaspoons of added sugar.

Beverages like pop, ‘fruit drinks’, sports drinks and even 100 per cent fruit juice and chocolate or flavoured milks are replacing healthier choices, such as plain milk and water. This can result in the development of unhealthy habits in children’s diets, both at school and at home.

To help our kids quench their thirst and to keep them hydrated all day long, send water to school in a reusable bottle. To help keep water cold put it in the refrigerator overnight and add ice cubes in the morning.
