PHOTO CONTEST!It’s been a spectacular year for photos at VFC. Our members and friends have sent us count-less amazing images of stun-ning scenery, airplanes, and the people who fly them! Our Photo of the Month contest has come to a conclusion for the year, as well as the strut logo photo contest that has been running on our Facebook page for the past few weeks!

All submissions for Photo of the Month were entered into a ran-dom draw, and this year’s winner of a $100 Victoria Flying Club

gift certificate is Elgin Penner. Congratulations Elgin, and you can pick up your prize from the VFC Dispatch Desk.

The strut logo photo contest has been great fun, and the collec-tion of photos we received was unbelievable and it would be impossible for us to choose our favourite. But... the people have spoken. Votes were given by “Likes” or comments and the landslide winner was Alethia Forsberg with a grand total of 89 “Likes” and comments. Congrat-ulations Alethia! Ramona has

some great prizes for you!

We have some great ideas for photo contests in 2015. Look for details in upcoming issues of The Patrician, or visit our Face-book page at facbook.com/FlyVFC

And remember to always keep your camera in your flight bag!

Congratulations to our latest photo contest winners!

Feature Article

The start of a new year often lends itself to introspection and reflection. It’s a chance to look back on the previous year, and to look ahead to the next 12 months. It’s also a great time to evaluate your current position in relation to your goals, and to set new ones.

When it comes to flying, what would you like to accomplish this year? Here are some op-tions for you. Pick a goal and make it happen!

• Finish a licence or rating that is in progress.

• Complete a night rating, and extend the available hours that you can fly.

• Go for a Seaplane Discov-ery Flight and explore a whole new dimension of aviation.

• Challenge yourself with an IFR or MIFR rating.

• Connect with other pilots and mentors who will in-spire and inform you.

• If you’re not current, make this the year you get back in the game. Book an an-nual checkride and brush up on critical skills.

• Get involved. Join the fly-outs, attend the AGM, reserve your tickets to the Wings Banquet on Janu-ary 31.

• Make a career plan and set a timeline to keep you on track.

• Buckle down and get that written exam out of the way.

• If it’s been awhile, book a lesson with your instruc-tor and get back in the groove.

We know that earning your li-cence and launching a career in aviation are incredible accom-plishments. And accomplish-ments of this magnitude can seem daunting. But we also know that you can do it!

Instead of looking at the whole task ahead of you, break it down into small, manageable pieces. Do one thing each day that brings you closer to your ultimate goal, whatever that may be. Go online and book your next flight. Commit to 15 minutes of studying each day for the next week. Spend a few minutes planning a timeline with all of your goals for the year and set deadlines for each event.

Most importantly, don’t give up! You started flying for a reason. Don’t ever forget that reason! And if you’re struggling to make it all happen, let us know. Talk to your instructor about your concerns and work together to come up with a plan to ensure your success. We’re in the business of helping you achieve your dreams!

This is your year! Together, let’s make it an awesome one - the

Please Join Us At This Year’s Wings Banquet!

Mark your calendars for Saturday January 31, 2015 and plan to attend the Wings Banquet, in celebration of 2014 accomplishments by VFC students and pilots.

Join us at the Ward Room (1586 Esquimalt Rd) at 6:00 for cocktails before a delicious dinner and the awards ceremony. Dress is semi-formal.

Tickets are $40 and are available to members and guests from the VFC office. PPL and CPL graduates receive one complimentary ticket. Please RSVP by January 24th.

We do hope you will join us for a night of celebra-tion, great food, and a chance to get to know other club members. Along with recognizing our graduates, a number of flight training bursaries will also be awarded (see page 8 and 12 for more information on how to apply).

This year we are pleased to welcome back Ret. Colonel George Miller as our guest speaker for the night. For more than 35 years Colonel Miller was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, flying F-86 Sabres and CF-104 Starfighters in Eu-rope, and with the Golden Hawks, Canada’s first jet military aerobatic team. He went on to become a team leader of the Canadian Snowbirds. We are looking forward to hearing him share stories and photos from his extraordinary experiences. The Wings Banquet is a long-standing tradition at the Victoria Flying Club. Because our mem-bers are busy people who all operate on different

schedules, it is not often that we gather together as a group to celebrate what we have accom-plished as individuals, and as a club. That’s what makes the Wings Banquet special!

Everyone is welcome to attend and graduates are encouraged to invite friends, family, and guests. VFC members are certainly encouraged to attend, even if they are not among this year’s graduates. It is an inspiring and encouraging evening for everyone!

The Butler Flying Award

Claude Butler served as president of the Victoria Flying Club several times over the years. He was a successful businessman, inventor, and a man with many visions. His compassion and generosity knew no bounds. Claude always referred affectionately to his loving wife Jean, who was the Mayor of Central Saanich for several years, as “Her Warship.” He asked “Her Warship,” in his last moments, to do something memorable and worthwhile on his behalf for the Victoria Flying Club and this is how the Butler Flying Award was born.

Betty Wadsworth Scholarship

Betty Wadsworth joined the Victoria Flying Club in 1958 and was active in the support of general aviation all her life. As a director of COPA and a member of such organizations as BC Aviation Council and the Western Canada Aviation Museum of Flight and Transportation, her contributions have been recognized by numerous awards and citations. Betty Wadsworth maintained her connection with the Victoria Flying Club where she learned to fly, and when she died in April 1986 she left a portion of her estate to the Club. Since 1991, the interest from this grant has been awarded each year to further a member’s training, qualifications, or skills at the Victoria Flying Club.

Michael Cooper-Slipper Award

Michael Cooper-Slipper was born in England January 11th 1921 and he joined the AF Squadron 605 equipped with Hurricanes, at the tender age of 17. At 19 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for valour during the Battle of Britain. After the war he joined AVRO Canada and test few the CF-100, CF-102, and Orenda powered F-86. He also flew a modified B-47 as a test bed for the AVRO Arrow Iroquois engine. After his career as a test pilot he embarked on a career in aviation sales, first with de Havilland and then with Field Aviation. Mike is survived by his wife Rita who resides in Victoria.

Brian Smedley Award

Brian began his aviation career as an Aviation Mechanic for the Flying Fireman. This led him to become a pilot for the Flying Fireman followed by the BC Government Air Services. After 24 years with the BC Government, Brian flew for Ainsworth Lumber in 100 Mile House, BC. After retirement from flying, Brian was able to follow his lifelong dream to become a cowboy. He worked for many ranches in the Cariboo his last one being the 112 Mile Ranch.

The Long Family Women in Aviation Bursary

Deadline January 5th

The Long Family’s Women in Aviation Bursary is awarded annually to an individual who is under-taking her advanced pilot training at the Victoria Flying Club. The successful applicant will have already obtained her Commercial Pilot Licence and will be initating plans to obtain her Multi-En-gine IFR Rating.

This Bursary consists of $1,500.00 offered by Stephen and Olga Long. It is designed to alleviate some of the cost of dual instruction in the light twin aircraft at the Victoria Flying Club. In addi-tion to the monetary award, the Bursary also includes approximately six (6) hours of flight time in a glass cockpit Cessna 182 equipped with the most up-to-date technology available in a general aviation aircraft. This aspect of the Bursary is intended to give the successful applicant hands-on experience in a complex, GPS-equipped aircraft with an aim to putting the GPS-related questions on the INRAT examination well within the experiential reach of the examinee.

To apply for The Long Family Women In Aviation Bursary the applicant will, in a handwritten letter, introduce herself and explain why she has chosen the field of aviation as a career path, outline her aspirations within the aviation industry, and describe how this bursary might contribute to ful-filling her aspirations.

Feature Article

Thanks to VFC Member Dan Waldie for passing this on to us. What a great story!

In the spring of 1944, Bill Over-street and his P-51C, the “Berlin Express” were near Paris when the scene that is immortalized in the artwork by Len Krenzier of Action Art that leads this article took place. Bill had followed this Bf109 from the bombers he was escorting when most of the German fighters left. The two planes had been in a run-

ning dogfight. The German pilot flew over Paris hoping that the heavy German anti-aircraft artillery would solve his prob-lem and eliminate Overstreet and the “Berlin Express.” Bill managed to get some hits in at about 1500 feet. The German’s engine was hit and Bill stayed on his tail braving the intense enemy flak. His desperation undoubtedly growing, the Ger-man pilot aimed his plane at the Eiffel Tower and in a surpris-

ing maneuver, flew beneath it. Undeterred, Bill followed right behind him, scoring several more hits in the process. The German plane crashed and Bill escaped the heavy flak around Paris by flying low and full throttle over the river until he had cleared the city’s heavy anti-aircraft batteries.

In 2009, Bill Overstreet was presented France’s Legion of Honour. Before the ceremony,

The Pilot Who Flew Through the Eiffel Tower

Page 15: January 2015

Feature Article

Overstreet had previously said that, if he lived long enough to receive the Legion of Honour, he would be accepting it in memory of his fallen brothers. In particular he wanted to pay tribute to a friend, Eddy Simp-son, who died fighting the Nazis on the ground so his comrades, including Overstreet, could escape. After the award was pinned to his lapel, Overstreet said, “If I said ‘Thank you,’ it

wouldn’t be enough,” before adding, “What more than ‘Thank you’ do you need?”

Bill Overstreet recently passed away at a hospital in Roanoke, Virginia. He was born in Clifton Forge, Virginia in 1921, and after Pearl Harbour, he enlisted in the Air Corps as a fighter pi-lot. By February 1942 he was a private and sent to California for training. There, his instructors

prepared him for the unexpect-ed while in mid-flight by cutting the engine as he landed.

He was always humble. When-ever the press interviewed him, he said, “I didn’t do anything. We were a team.”

RIP Bill Overstreet, 1921-2014.
