Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice. Philippians 4:4

There’s just something about the purr of the engine, windows down, music blaring, and the pavement rolled out before you that gets the heart pumping.

Before moving back to Illinois in 2009, I lived in Denver, Colorado, for 7 years. Gas wasn’t yet $3 a gallon, so I’d often make the thirteen-hour drive back to see my family. And I did it so often… I developed a system.

Stage One was “Prep.” This included loading the car, gassing up the tank, and, most importantly, a snack run. I’d swing past Kroger on the way out of town and load up on the four main food groups: something sweet, something salty, something meaty, and something cheesy. This usually consisted of Zebra Cakes, roasted peanuts, beef jerky, and string cheese… though occasionally I’d live on the edge and get cashews instead of peanuts. A bag of ice for the cooler, some bottled water to prevent dehydration, a six-pack of Sioux City Sarsaparilla, and like a “Ramblin’ Man,” I was on my way.

Stage Two was “Head East.” From Denver, the directions to my hometown were simple: Get on I-70, go east 1000 miles, turn left. It took a little while to get out of the metro area of Denver, but there was always one spot, just on the other side of the I-70 & I-255 junction, where the traffic died down and the road opened up. It was the perfect metaphor. With the easing of the congestion, the frenetic nature of the big city behind me, and the freedom of the open road before me, there came a physical release of tension, a break from the insanity, and the comfort of knowing I was heading home. I’d throw on Tom Cochrane’s, “Life is a Highway,” and sing at the top of my lungs.

Stage Three was “The Cruise.” Sheryl Crow had a song in the 90s called, “Every Day is a Winding Road.” She obviously never took I-70 through Kansas. It’s flat, straight, and as boring as watching paint dry. Actually, I may have preferred watching paint dry. The interesting thing, though, was I could get a lot done: listen to new CD’s or books on tape, think about all life’s quandaries for hours upon hours, scientifically test the appropriate way to eat a Zebra Cake, call friends or family, or stop in Colby to see the world’s largest groundhog.

Stage Four was “The Arrival.” I knew I was getting close when I crossed the Chain of Rocks Bridge over the Mississippi River and saw the sign, “Welcome to Illinois: Land of Lincoln.” One hour and 37 minutes of corn and bean fields later, I’d be pulling into the drive of the home I grew up in. There was a peace that accompanied that familiarity. Denver was great… but this was home. And yet, the journey didn’t end there. That’s where it began. Spending time with family and friends, eating Mom’s cooking, playing games, eating Mom’s leftovers, going out to the farm with my Dad, eating some more. Though I was home, the journey wasn’t over.

January 3|4 “Ramblin’ Man” (or woman)

January 10|11 “Life Is a Highway”

January 17|18 “Everyday is a Winding Road”

January 24|25 “Jesus, Take the Wheel”

Our spiritual lives mirror such a road trip. Some of us are stuck in craziness, not yet on THE Journey, just considering what it means to have a relationship with Christ. Maybe you’re stocking up on the snacks but haven’t yet hit the road – going to church, learning more, but haven’t accepted Christ into your life. Perhaps you’ve just set out on the highway, fired up, windows down, Tom Cochrane blaring – you’ve given God your life and are growing in faith. Or, you could be one who is on the road, moving toward the goal, getting things done… not quite there, but close. However, the ultimate goal is to be Christ-centered, a symbiotic relationship where one can’t tell where He ends and you begin… where Christ has taken the wheel in your life as the ultimate and only source of control. This is the warmth and familiarity our hearts long for. This is the goal of our Journey. And yet, it’s not the end, but a beginning… a way of life that changes everything. This is home.

We’ll explore each of these stages of our spiritual lives in our January worship series called, “On the Journey.” And you may even hear some of the tunes I would rock out to on my road trip. Roll down the windows, turn up the tunes, and come with us “On the Journey.”

weather closing information If we must close our building due to inclement weather, it will be communicated on WICS News Channel 20 and WRSP Fox Channel 55/27. We will also notify all ministry leaders that have events planned so they may communicate this information to their group. If the facility is open and your activity is canceled, please notify those in your group. Also, please contact Lana Salomonson at [email protected] or Sharon Sweeney at [email protected] , so we can respond appropriately to inquiries.

JANUARY KIDLIFE

Preschool CurriculumWe all need Jesus. I need Jesus. You need Jesus. Even our little preschool friends need Jesus. And, that’s what we’re sharing with them this month. Each week, our preschoolers will hear a story of someone who really needed Jesus—in a very big way. The blind man needed Jesus to help him see for the very first time. (Oh, how preschoolers love the mud aspect of this story.) The lame man needed Jesus to heal him so he could get up and walk. The deaf man needed Jesus to help him hear and talk. Can you imagine suddenly being able to hear and speak clearly having never done so before? How awesome! The ten lepers needed Jesus to heal them, and He did.

All these men really needed Jesus to do some pretty big things. And, sometimes preschoolers need Jesus for some pretty big things; at least they’re big to them. What we want our preschoolers to know is that we all need Jesus, and He is there with us each and every day to love us and to help us. What an amazing Savior He is.

elementary curriculum It takes practice to grow and mature in your relationship with God. It takes commitment. That’s why we’re spending the whole month of January to discover how commitment can show up in our lives as we practice our faith. Commitment is making a plan and putting it into practice. If we want to know God better, we need to practice our faith. And the best place to start is with spiritual disciplines; or what we call “faith skills.”

In KidLife, we have four faith skills that we think kids need to practice to know God better, and we are going to dig deeper into these faith skills to help kids get a handle on what it means to practice their faith. We use four simple words to help us remember these skills:HEAR. PRAY. TALK. LIVE.  Each week this month, we’ll focus on one of the faith skills as we talk about making a plan and putting itinto practice.

We can’t wait to see what God will do in the lives of kids and families this month as we commit to practice our faith and grow in our relationship with God.

JANUARY 2015 11

When we hear the word entourage, most of us think of

celebrities walking the streets of Beverly Hills, barking

orders at their “people” — people paid to hang out with

their famous “friends.” The actual definition of entourage

is a group of people attending or surrounding an

important person. Even if we don’t feel important enough

for an actual entourage, most of us want at least a

handful of people who like to hang around us—people

who laugh at our jokes, go to the movies with us, and

simply have our back. In the Old Testament, King

David, his son Absalom, and David’s grandson Rehoboam

were no different. As royals, each had an entourage

and, through their experiences, we see that the choices

we make with those around us can change everything.

Looking ahead to the January ONETHING:On January 25th, StudentLife will host a God’s Not Dead movie night at Fusion. The night will include free food, popcorn, and of course music from our amazing Fusion Worship Band. This event will be open to all students in 6th to 12th grade and will be a great chance to invite friends with questions about the Christian faith. Be sure to check out www.godsnotdeadthemovie.com for more info on the movie itself and be praying about who God might want YOU to invite!
