Students First At The Test Centre If you happened to pass by the Newnham Test Centre during exam week you may have noticed there were a lot more smiles and a lot less stressed students than one would expect to see, at the Test Centre, during this time of the semester. An average of 350 students were processed, per day, during exam week at the Newnham Test Centre. Traditionally, this influx of high traffic would cause long lines to form out- side the Centre, add unnecessary stress to students and in turn make their visit to the Test Centre a stress- ful one. This unnecessary anxiety and agitation was recognized by Test Centre management and various steps were enacted to help eliminate this stress. Greeters were placed by the Test Centre entrance to answer questions and direct students. Learning Centre staff were recruited to help manage the high volume of students. Test Centre Lounges were assembled for students waiting to write their exam. At a Test Centre lounge students were provided with refreshments, information regarding Test Centre pro- cedures and a quiet study space. These changes were met with an overwhelmingly positive response by both students and staff. The expansion of these services to the Seneca @ York campus is currently in motion and the expansion of these services to the Markham and King Test Centre is currently being evaluated. Welcoming New Seneca Students

Skills Assessment Preparatory Workshop

Make sure to keep an eye out for the Learning and Test Centre during all Orientation and Open House events. Both centres work together to inform new students of the resources and services avail-able to them through Seneca Learning Services and to offer a free Study Skills workshop.

Faculty/Instructors are able to request an in-class visit or a

tour of the Learning Centre via the Learning Centre website, under the Faculty/Instructor tab.

Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from both Seneca students and staff, the Learning and Test Centre have decided to con-tinue to combine their resources and to offer Skills Assessment Prepara-tory workshops to all new Seneca students. Piloted in the fall semester, the Skills Assessment Preparatory workshops were designed to review basic mathematical and essay writing concepts while preserving the integrity of the Skills Assessment test.

The workshops were especially well received by both mature students who are returning to school as well as by students who English is their second language. Workshops are held twice a week at both the Newn-ham and Seneca@York campus and will recommence in February 2014.

SenecaLibraries

Seneca’s Libraries and Learning Services is comprised of the Learning Centre the Test Centre and Seneca Libraries

Seneca Libraries has been partnering with the School of Fashion and ITS to build a digital fashion library that will contain 360 degree images of the 15,000 histori-cal costumes in Seneca’s Fashion Resource Centre collection. The team is led by Dale Peers, Coordinator of Fashion Arts, and includes Lydia Tsai, Metadata Librarian, and student workers.

Our digital fashion library will make Seneca College and our School of Fashion unique in the country. Upon completion, it will enhance both the national and international reputation of our college and programs. The repository is expected to launch in late Summer 2014.

The Sandbox is a new initiative built in partnership with The CAE, Learning Centre and ITS that helps support and promote digital literacies. Now open at Seneca@York library, a second Sandbox location is scheduled to open in B2082, the Newnham Computing Commons, in early Winter 2014.

The Sandbox provides flexible spaces and equipment for faculty and students to explore and create digital media projects. In collaboration with The CAE, The Sandbox instructional program provides workshops to the college community on topics that include designing digital assignments, creating video projects, digital story-telling, and presentation skills. Drop by the new space or sign-up for an upcoming workshop.
