MISSION
STATEMENT OF FOUNDER2013-2014* has been an extremely important period for the Institute. During this period we have cemented historic new institutional pillars and partnerships that have enabled us to greatly expand our facilities and programs. Our merger with Artists for Peace and Justice through the joint creation of the Audio Institute, in partnership with the We are the World Foundation, has given birth to an entire new division and to our new larger institutional umbrella of the Artists Institute. Through this expanded entity and mission we now offer college training, employment and professional support in film, music, and audio engineering. Over the next 12 months our student body will double.
This expansion and growth, fueled by the firm belief in the talent and artistic capabilities of Haitian youth, is precisely the type of concrete investment in local institution building that Haiti so desperately needs. The nation severely lacks long term brick and mortar investment, and as a result Haiti’s youth lacks concrete modern skills that they can use to get jobs. As you will see in the coming pages, our work and investment is paying off. Well trained film, music and audio producers and technicians are in demand, and their lives and careers are being dramatically transformed as a result of their time with us. Creative industries are certainly vibrant and matter financially everywhere in the world and each year through our work we are helping to move the local economic needle higher for countless students and graduates.
On behalf of the entire APJ and Artists Institute team, we thank you for your support and solidarity.
David Belle Jacmel, Haiti
*Note to reader: To streamline reporting we decided it best to move into a scholastic calendar year - so this report covers January 2013-July 2014. Future reports will be issued annually based on the scholastic calendar.
Artists Institute is a free college for art and technology. We offer high quality training, professional development, and employment services. The Institute is made up of two divisions: Ciné Institute, Haiti’s only film school, and Audio Institute: We are the World School of Music and Audio Engineering.
VISIONWe believe Haiti’s future lies in the hands of its youth. Our vision is to create modern opportunities for Haiti’s underprivileged youth by fostering entrepreneurship and business development in local creative industries.
3
IT IS OFTEN SAID THAT HAITI HAS MORE ARTISTS PER CAPITA THAN ANY OTHER NATION IN THE WORLD
NEED: NOT EVEN OF HAITIANS ATTEND COLLEGE
To address this fundamental need, Artists Institute created a free modern post-secondary program, making college accessible to Haiti’s industrious youth, and offering employment opportunities and professional support to alumni.

Founded with the We Are the World Foundation, in partnership with Artists for Peace and Justice, Audio Institute aims to transform Haiti’s music industry into an equal opportunity economic driver by providing free two-year college education in audio engineering and music production, as well as employment and professional services for students, alumni, local artists, and international artists.
The centerpiece of the Audio Institute is a magnificent professional recording studio, where students receive hands on experience and renowned artists visit for sessions and collaborations.
Our audio facilities are designed and certified by world renowned acoustic design firm WSDG, and include a world class recording studio, multiple tracking and mix rooms, and of course, classrooms.
In addition to training Haiti’s next generation of engineers and producers, our facilities are used by national and international artists and producers.
17
TRAINING The first institution of its kind in Haiti, Audio Institute features a world-class recording studio, Pro Tools-enabled writing rooms, and a technical curriculum based on the use of tablets developed in partnership with some of the top audio engineering programs in the world.

VISITING ARTISTS
Over the course of the two-year curriculum, students work under the mentorship of industry professionals and visiting faculty, learning the necessary technical and business skills to prepare them for local sustainable careers at international standards.
The Audio Institute Presents Series gives students real world experience in which to apply the skills they learn in class. Students work together to promote, do pre-production, set up and live sound work, with the assistance and oversight of faculty and staff.
Audio Institute also focuses on recording and cataloging the country’s musical traditions – playing a crucial role in the preservation of the musical culture that is an integral part of Haitian identity.
In just its first two months, Audio Institute welcomed Haitian and international music industry professionals including:
Claude Pierre, of Haiti’s famous big band Ensemble Nemours Jean-Baptiste, gave a Master Class about band dynamics and the importance of copyright.
Fritz Gerald Francois, Haitian music studio owner and audio engineer, gave a Master Class on sound and stage settings, which students would apply directly for the first Audio Institute concert.
Boulo Valcourt, one of Haiti’s original troubadours and an international musician, gave a Master Class on the importance of melody, musician skills for engineers, and communicating with artists to achieve goals.
Haitian troubadours, Ti-Coca and Wanga-Nègès, Jean Marc Jepiel, Boulo Valcourt and Audio Institute students, DJ Greg and DJ Winner, performed for our first Audio Institute Presents concert series.
APJ Advisory Board Member and Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame artist, Jackson Browne, gave a Master Class on the creative process.
Socially conscious Haitian Pop-Star and Audio Institute Advisory board member BélO gave a Master Class on the role of an artist in society and the importance of being conscious of the message you pass on through your art.
Grammy Award Winning band Arcade Fire took part in Jacmel Canaval activities and helped to produce Jakmel Jou Bare’n. The band talked to students about how they were inspired by Haitian music and culture and how that came out on their recent album “Reflektor”.
Haitian music legend Sanba Zao, and founder of the Racine music genre that blends Vodou music and popular music, discussed with our students the importance of culture and keeping it present even as music evolves, as well as his personal process of rediscovering Haitian music. He also gave a drumming Master Class.
Music promoter Harry Luc, who is BélO’s manager and the founder of the HandZup group who co-promoted Jakmel JouBaren, talked about the current music industry in Haiti.
Music legends Boukman Eksperyans discussed music and performed an unplugged concert for the students.
Up and coming Racine band Lakou Mizik played a show for the school and talked to students about how they were bringing modern sensibility to Haitian traditional music.
Sound Engineer and acoustician Eddy Renaud gave a Master Class in sound and discussed the evolution of the music industry in Haiti. He also helped build the Audio Institute music studio and owns the largest sound company in Haiti.
Socially conscious hip-hop artist and rapper from Chicago, Psalm, visited the school and collaborated with students on a beat making and lyric writing workshop.
