Elizabeth College International Student Staff

I have really enjoyed working with students on the International Students Program at Elizabeth College this year. As manager

with Yvonne Sypkes my role has involved organising excursions and providing academic and lifestyle support for international students at our school.

All our international students work hard while they are at Elizabeth College and Yvonne and I provide whatever academic support we can. We also believe it is important that students see as much of our beautiful state of Tasmania as possible while they are here.

I was born and grew up in Hobart, however I have spent most of my working life in Japan. Here I met some wonderful people who went out of their way to show me their fascinating

Elizabeth College is proud of its long tradition of working with international and exchange students. The College

in enriched and enlivened by the number of students who come to us for cultural and educational reasons from all over the globe.

Truly we are an international College and the articles and photos in this newsletter are a collage of the journey that these students have taken with us over the course of the year.

We have wonderful support staff who are highly skilled and experienced. I want to assure you that the education of your son or daughter is in very good hands at Elizabeth College. This newsletter is a representation of the journey that our international and exchange students have taken throughout 2011. We hope you enjoy reading about their time at our College as much as we enjoyed having them as students.

country. Now I want to do the same for students who come to study at Elizabeth College.

This year we went to historical sites such as Richmond, Port Arthur and the Cascade Brewery, met some Tasmanian animals at Bonorong Wildlife Park and the Shot Tower. We finished the year with a luncheon at The Boat House Restaurant. The excursions have been great fun and I hope that the students who participated have seen a little more of Tasmania than they would have otherwise.

It has been very rewarding to get to know all the International students better and help them progress towards their goals. I look forward to hearing about all their fantastic achievements in 2012 and beyond.

Students who are interested in attending Elizabeth College either as an international fee paying student or exchange student should email Assistant Principal Craig Carnes at [email protected].

My role at the Elizabeth College is to support International students. In 2011, we have had 25 students from Japan, Vietnam, China, South Korea, Nepal, Italy, Germany and France attend the College.

I have worked with Heath Watts, Craig Carnes and other staff to provide students with academic and lifestyle support, assist students to access government services, enrol at universities and TAFEs from around the country and organise excursions.

My office is next to the student common room where students spend their free time in a relaxed and supportive environment – having lunch together, helping each other with their studies, and practicing their English. It’s a great place to make new friends.

The students have worked hard all year to achieve the results they need to go onto further study. Our students have chosen many different careers to pursue – most will remain in Australia

to continue on with their education and others are returning home to attend university. This year I have helped students enrol in a wide range of courses at universities across Australia including Business, Architecture, Computing and Information Technology, Health, Science and Teaching.

As well as working hard, students have also had the opportunity to spend some time together outside school. We have visited Port Arthur and Richmond to learn about Tasmanian history, Mona Museum, Bonorong Wildlife Park to see koalas and kangaroos, walked on the beaches close to our school, and attended the College production.

I wish the students all the best in their future endeavours and I hope they will keep in touch and let us know how they are going.

International Education Awards 2011

Special International Award for Fay Millikan

It is with sadness that we recognise the passing of Fay who had a very special influence on international students for over

20 years. Her diligence and support of the

international students in all aspects of their stay, while studying at Elizabeth College, had been outstanding.

She always went out of her way and spent many more hours than required to ensure the students were supported and nurtured.

The students often commented on Fay’s warmth, care, support and great sense of fun. The students remember her with great fondness.

Fay and her work has been an integral foundation stone of the current international program at Elizabeth College.

MHA Jackie Petrusma, Hobart Lord Mayor Damon Thomas and Assistant Principal Elizabeth College Craig Carnes.

Rebecca Thompson receiving the award on behalf of her mother from Education Minister, Nick McKim.

Her legacy not only moulded what was to come but also shaped the future in terms of curriculum and welfare support; excursion programs and integrating international students within the college framework so they had a sense of identity and belonging to the school community.

It was special moment recently at the International Awards Ceremony that Rebecca Thompson, Fay's daughter, was given a special certificate by the Education Minister to commemorate her tireless work in this area.

Craig Carnes,Assistant Principal.

Recently Principal Dianne Purnell, Assistant Principal Craig Carnes, International Student Manager Heath

Watts and support teacher Yvonne Skyes attended the International Education Awards in Hobart.

There were a total of twelve awards in several categories; homestay, community, teaching and international student. Two award ceremonies were held in the north and south of the state.

Elizabeth College was very pleased to note that our own Sangwon Lee was nominated in the student category and was given a special mention. Sangwon is a wonderful ambassador for his country and Elizabeth College.

Sangwon on the 11th of November during the final assembly for students was awarded Best International Student 2011. Heath Watts, presented the prize and said that Sangwon will no doubt achieve his dreams at university level.

We wish him all the best in his studies for the future.

Australian Prime Minister Visits Elizabeth College

On Friday the 26th August, Elizabeth College was proud to have the honourable Prime Minister Julia

Gillard visit our school during a short visit to Hobart last week. A fortunate group of year eleven and twelve students waited in anticipation for the arrival of Julia Gillard, as camera crews and photographers set up around the theatre and excitement began to build.

The PM spoke and answered questions for nearly an hour about her vision for the future in regard to global warming and the carbon tax, and the ways in which this will affect future generations of Australians. She answered

questions from college students on a variety of different topics including gay marriage, public education and the money which goes into hospitals. Student journalists were also given the opportunity to stand in the background of a press conference which was held at Elizabeth College after PM Julia Gillard’s speech, she even asked us if we had any questions!

It was a great chance for these students to get a feel for what goes on behind the scenes in journalism, and overall it was a valuable experience for all involved.

Visit to Elizabeth College by International Education Agents

On 14 November, Dianne Purnell (Principal of Elizabeth College), Craig Carnes (Assistant Principal

International Education), Heath Watts (International Student Program Manager) and Yvonne Sypkes (International Student

Program Support) attended an international education Networking Event at the Old Woolstore which was part of the 2011 International Education Agent Familiarisation Tour sponsored by the Minister’s Round Table on International Education. At this event we

met agents from Korea, Malaysia, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Hong Kong. This was a fantastic event and a great opportunity to promote Tasmanian and Elizabeth College to a large group of education agents and talk to the agents about the needs and desires of their clients.

The next day the same group of agents came to Elizabeth College. In the international student common room we talked about the wide range of subjects available at Elizabeth College, university entrance requirements and the career pathways of past and present students. We then went on a short tour which included the recently redeveloped science laboratories, the library and performing arts department.

On the way we walked past much of the artwork on display which was completed by Elizabeth College students. All of the agents were amazed by the high standard of the student work.

It was an honour and a privilege to host so many international education agents and we hope that we have a long and fruitful relationship.

Steven Fu - China

My name is Steven Fu, I’m from China. I really enjoy studying at Elizabeth College and living in Hobart. This is a really good and beautiful place to stay. I have been to lots of wonderful places, like Wineglass Bay, Mount Wellington, and Richmond etc. which is great. I’ve been studying here for two years and I have made a huge improvement in my English. I made many friends here who are from Korea, Japan, and Germany etc. and they are really kind and good in study as well.

I fall into many troubles but my friends and teachers helped me a lot. Nothing difficult, you just work hard and you teacher will help you. Although I will graduate this year I will miss Elizabeth College and this school memory will still stay in my mind. For the future I am planning to study at the university of Tasmania because I love this state and want to find a good job in Australia, find a beautiful wife, have lots of kids. If you want to try western education, choose whatever subjects you like and your dreams will come true. So what are you waiting for? The next student may be you.

Yukun Wu - China

Hi, I’m Yukun Wu. I come from North-Western China. I have been in Australia and studying at Elizabeth College for two years. I really enjoy my life here in Tasmania. It is quite a big challenge for me to study in such a different place especially in terms of culture and language background. During my last two years stay in Australia, my English has improved a lot. I have to really thank the people here who have been of help to me. Compared with the competitive study life in China, it is much more easy-going and practical in Tassie. I can choose the subjects I am interested in. Apart from school work, I have a lot more extracurricular time to do my own things.

Furthermore Tasmania is a very beautiful place with lots of amazing natural sceneries. I am leaving Tassie as soon as I finish my college study and I plan to attend university in NSW. It is wonderful to have stayed here for two years!

Japanese Sister School Visit a Huge Success

From July 27 until August 8 Elizabeth College hosted 14 students and two staff from our sister school ‘Hiroshima

Inokuchi Senior High’. The reciprocal arrangement whereby Inokuchi visits us each year and we send a contingent of staff and students to them, has now been in operation for a period of 13 Years.

We have sent over 100 students and 20 staff during this period of time, for a fantastic cultural and educational experience.

Our guests from Hiroshima enjoyed their time in Tasmania immensely and were involved in numerous activities including bushwalking and sightseeing on Tasmania’s beautiful East Coast (Bicheno and Coles Bay), eagle hang gliding at Tahune, working with students from Lansdowne Crescent Primary and Lenah Valley Primary, and visiting Port Arthur, the

Salmon Ponds, Salamanca, Mount Wellington, Cadbury, Bonnorong Park, Richmond, and Government House.

The students also got to sample a typical day at school which included lessons in cooking, Japanese, and volleyball. Many of the students commented on the excellent facilities at Elizabeth and how they would like to come here full time.

Many people contributed to the success of the tour and our thanks are extended to all of the host families who gave up their time and energy to look after a student or staff member.

We received excellent feedback from many families who believed that it was an enriching and rewarding experience for all.

International Student Excursion to Port Arthur

Tassie Wildlife - Bonorong Park Excursion

On Wednesday the 3rd of August 18 exchange students went to Port Arthur, among them were Italians (Marta,

Valentina, Matilde and Fiametta), Chinese (Yukun), Japanese, Korean and French (Jules, Marie and Me) people. Just arrived, we made a boat trip to see landscapes, the cemetaries and the old jail: Port Arthur. I didn't enjoy the boat trip because I was sick because of the rocky boat but the landscapes were amazing. After the boat trip, the guide gave us a card (like a game card) , each card corresponded to a convict. My convict was a young French man who stole 10 dollars. His punishment was to spend seven years in prison.

After lunch, we visited a house built by the convicts. It was impressive because building a house takes a lot of work. After we saw an old church in bad conditions (no roof). The weather was excellent.

We also did some shopping and stopped for ice cream on the way home. Tasmanian is so beautiful, I would love to return one day!

Elizabeth College Connects with Hanban

College Assistant Principal Craig Carnes has recently returned from a study scholarship to China offered by Hanban,

the Chinese Language Teaching Office and had the opportunity to work with 60 Australian and New Zealand educators at Beijing language and Culture University for a week to learn about Chinese culture including language and review teaching materials.

As a result of this trip Elizabeth College was delighted to receive teaching materials from the Hanban Institute which were delivered by the Hanban Melbourne office via liaison officer and study tour coordinator Irene Guerin.

Hanban is a non-profit organization affiliated to the Ministry of Education of China. It is committed to making the Chinese language

and culture teaching resources and services available to the world, to meeting the demands of overseas Chinese learners to the utmost, to contributing to the formation of a world of cultural diversity and harmony.

College Assistant Principal Craig Carnes said that the material from the Chinese Language Teaching Office, would add to our resources to provide up-to-date teaching materials to help improve the quality of programs for international students at the college.

“It’s also an important step in enhancing the exchange and cooperation between China and Tasmania in the field of Chinese language teaching.”

The Chinese language resources from Hanban will help international students make a

smooth transition into Tasmanian schools.” Mr Carnes said.

Highlights of the Hanban donation to Elizabeth College included:

• Multi-media Chinese textbooks for all levels and age groups

• Books and DVDs on Chinese history and culture

Elizabeth College offers its thanks and gratitude to the Hanban Office for the wonderful opportunity to visit the Beijing language and Culture University and take away so many wonderful ideas to assist the learning of Chinese students in Australia based on pedagogy styles in China.

Guangyi Li - China

My name is Guangyi Li. I come from Guangzhou which is a big city in Southern China. Several years ago I moved to Guangzhou with my parents. My mother is not from Guangzhou, so she always speaks dialect with my father, but I cannot speak dialect so I feel very sad. When I came to college, I could not speak English fluently so I had to say sorry to everyone because I am not good at communication with people.

I don't like people criticizing me and I am sure nobody likes to be criticised by me, particularly about language. I have my own faith and concept and say believe in yourself!

Aki Matsumoto - Japan

My name is Aki Matsumoto. This is my second year at Elizabeth College and I am a year 12 student. I am studying English as a Second Language, Mathematics and Japanese. I’m having fun at Elizabeth College and the teachers are really nice. I live with a homestay family and I enjoy spending time with them. They like to talk to my twin sister and I about Japan. We hope that they will visit us in Japan. Next year I am planning to study at university in Japan or TAFE in Australia.

I made many international friends while I have been at Elizabeth College. In my free time I talked with my friends and studied at home. Next year I would like to study hospitality at Queensland. I am very interested in hospitality so I would like to study it. Next year I will leave Hobart but I would like to come back someday. Tasmania is beautiful place and I would like to show my friends in Japan places like Russell Falls, Port Arthur, and the beaches around Hobart.

Sangwon Lee - South Korea

Hello, I’m Sangwon from South Korea. I came to Elizabeth College in 2010 and am in year 12 now.I have been studying exciting subjects such as Maths Specialised, Maths Applied, Chemistry, Physical

Sciences and English. Maths Specialised is my favourite subject because I’m good at it and feel relaxed and confident when I’m studying it.

I’m planning to go to the interstate for university next year but I don’t know which state I will go to yet. I will go to Sydney or Melbourne. What I have enjoyed most is hanging out with my international friends many times. I went on excursions and had nice parties with them. I had a great time and it must be one of my precious memories.

I would like to be a specialist in a specific area of Medicine because I have an interest in that area. That’s why I spend most of my time studying Chemistry and Maths. I hope I get offers from universities associated with Medicine.

Joel Hwang - South Korea

My name is Andrew Wong. I am from Malaysia. Being a student who loves travelling abroad to gain new experiences, I decided to further my education in Tasmania, Australia. Although I find it hard to adapt to these new circumstances when it comes to the difference in lifestyle, I try my best to do so. Living with my foster parents and their son makes my life easier and comfortable by helping me to understand the lifestyle of Australian people. A peaceful and quiet environment like Tasmania gives students a better place to work and study efficiently without distractions.

I am currently enrolled as a Year 12 student and will be completing my education in a year. It may be difficult for me just to complete this tertiary education in a year, but I will strive to do my very best. I am studying 5 pre-tertiary subjects which are, English Communications 3, Maths Methods 3, Maths Specialised, Chemistry and Physics. The subjects that I am undertaking make me feel like a “geek”, but building a solid foundation in my education background will prove essential to be admitted into a good university.

As an enthusiast for astronomy, I will be doing a course in Physics then move on to Master Astrophysics in a university in the United States of America. Many people have asked me why I am studying in Australia if I am heading to America to further my education. It was because my parents thought the cost of living in Tasmania which includes the education fees will be much cheaper than in America. Hence, we could save the extra education funds for university purposes in the United States. Unfortunately, things became different when the currency of the Australian Dollar proves to be stronger than the current US Dollar. Although having a practical career proves to be a wiser decision, I remain persistent to pursue my dream as a successful astronomer. Elizabeth College is definitely a place filled with friendly communities, helpful teachers and most of all, they are always willing to lend a helping hand to ensure you succeed in your pathway.

Xuan Le - Vietnam

Hi, my name is Lam Xuan Le. I am from Vietnam. I started studying at Elizabeth College in 2011. This year I studied English as a Second Language 1, English as a Second Language 2, Maths Methods 2 and Maths Methods 3. At the start of the year I could not speak English very well and could not understand my teachers well. However now I understand a lot more and I am much more confident talking to my friends and teachers in English. I really enjoy studying in Hobart. It is a very quiet town and I can concentrate on my studies.

Everyone is very friendly in Tasmania – especially the teachers at Elizabeth College. I sometimes help in my auntie’s clothes shop in Eastlands (a local shopping centre) and sometimes I see my teachers in my auntie’s shop as well.

Allen Zhang - China

My name is Allen Zhang and I’m from China. This is my first time at Elizabeth College. I will live here for three years. I enjoy studying at Elizabeth College now. This is a beautiful school and has many friendly students. My English is not very good but now I try speaking English every day. I think speak more and more English can improve my English and I will raise the level of my English so fast, then I can make many friends. I can play with my friends in the school every day.

I think this life is very interesting and I love the Elizabeth College library because there are a lot of books, I can learn from much knowledge. If I see something I don’t understand I will go to library find solutions. I do my homework in the library. I’m very happy every day in there.

Ori Kim - South Korea

Hello, my name is Ori Kim and i am from Seoul, Korea. I came to Elizabeth College for year 11 and 12. I’m very happy to study here. I like education in Hobart and people in Hobart. I’m really glad that I’ve met many good friends and good teachers. I didn’t have any hard subjects last year so I always hung out with my friends. I didn’t even miss my mum because of it, but I’m very busy studying this year and really miss my family.

I’m studying Maths, Chinese, ESL and Art this year. I’m planning to study Industrial Design at university next year. I’m going back to Seoul in November and I’m really looking forward to it.

Laura Park - South Korea

My name is Laura (Ahreum) Park, I am from South Korea and currently studying year 11 at Elizabeth College. This year is the second for me in Australia. I came to Australia on September 2009 which is when I was in grade 9. I went to Ogilvie High School. I had really good memories from Ogilvie high. This year I am studying Maths, Business studies, ESL and Fashion design. So far I like to study Fashion Design and ESL. These are my favourite classes. In fashion class I learnt lots of things as I never used a sewing machine, but I learnt that in class. I made some clothes and bags. It was the first time to make clothes by myself. I love to learn make clothes and learning about English. English is still hard but I have enjoyed ESL class.

The teacher are really nice and my class mates are awesome! I also interested in other languages so next year I am planning to study Japanese in EC If I can. I have good memories of this year. I went to Port Arthur, Shot tower and Mona Museum with other international students. The Mona Museum impressed me. It was great to look there. I would like to recommend that place to people who travel to Hobart. We also had a BBQ there and we enjoyed it very much. After year 12 I would like to study Fashion Design at Melbourne TAFE. I had a great time in year 12.

Hyun Jang - South Korea

My name is Hyun Jang and I am from Korea. I am studying at Elizabeth College and I’m living in Hobart which I am enjoying. Hobart life is good as it is a small town.

I have been studying at this College for about 5 months. I used to study in South Australia. Adelaide is very different to Hobart but I’m getting used to living in Hobart and it is becoming more comfortable. I think Hobart is a good place to concentrate on study and prepare for university. In the future I want to be a civil engineer because I am interested in designing buildings and I hope that I can study at a university in NSW. First I have to finish well next year in year 12.

International Student Awards at Farewell 2011 Lunch

On Thursday 3rd November the Elizabeth College International Student Program students and staff had a wonderful

‘farewell lunch’ at the Boathouse in Cornelian Bay. Most of the ISP students got stuck into a steak but the more health conscious amongst us tried the mushrooms and the fish. Popular consensus said the steak was the best. Craig Carnes (Assistant Principal International Education) thanked the students for choosing to come to EC and gave all our leavers a book on Tasmania and a photo from one of our excursions.

The Principal of Elizabeth College, Dianne Purnell gave out some awards. Xuan Lam Le received the award for Best Attendance 2011, Sangwon Lee and Jing Cai the award for Best Academic Achievement 2011 and Jaol Kim the Most Improved English Award 2011. Yukun Wu, Ahreum Park, Aashna Shrestha and Zheng Wong all received encouragement awards for their hard work during 2011. After all the awards we had desert…..we agreed that the one with fairy floss on the top was the yummiest.

Beautiful Tasmania.

International Excursion to the Shot Tower

We had a great start to the 2011 for the International Student Program (ISP) at Elizabeth College. We

started with 18 full fee paying international students at Elizabeth College this year – and what a wonderful bunch of people they are. Our ISP students come from P.R of China, Germany, Korea, Japan, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tibet and Vietnam. It is fantastic experience for these students to be able to study at Elizabeth College and their presence really reinforces the reputation of Elizabeth College as the multicultural college.

As a part of the ISP educational program at Elizabeth College, the ISP Team organises excursions to help our students appreciate the history of Tasmania and see a little more of our beautiful state. On 29th March we went to the Shot Tower in Taroona. We all lost count of the number of stairs to the top, but all the students agreed that the view was worth it when they got there. Some students were a little taken aback

by the fact that the Shot Tower was where they used to make shot for guns but it was a good opportunity to learn a little about Tasmania’s colonial past. Some of the comments from

students included, “How much further is it to the top?”(Aki and Nao), “Great view” (Yukun Wu), and “We’re hungry, when is lunch?” (Laura and Fuling).

Chinese Teacher - My Shanghai Trip (Hanban)

I was very fortunate to be selected and granted the opportunity to attend a professional training related to Chinese

teaching materials and pedagogy in Shanghai from the 18th to the 24th of November 2010.

The training was hosted and sponsored by Hanban/Confucius Institute, a public institution affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education and committed to providing Chinese language and cultural teaching resources and services worldwide.

There were more than one thousand teachers from all continents around the world in attendance at the event. Due to the large number of teachers, the training was held in four different cities.

I was assigned to Shanghai training centre where there were 338 teachers from Oceania and Europe.

The training in Shanghai was very intensive. Teaching materials, developed by Hanban,

were distributed immediately following brief introductory speeches by keynote speakers.

The developers explained and illustrated the characteristics of the teaching materials and how they might be used in classrooms.

The teachers then selected the relevant teaching materials according to the levels they teach at school and formed into groups to do further training.

Apart from the intensive training, we also had fun cultural experiences such as visiting Shanghai Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Museum and night scenery from Huangpu River.

I was very tired and exhausted at the end of the training, but this rare opportunity was professionally beneficial and rewarding.

Elizabeth College Student the Best in Concours D’Entrecasteaux Competition

Elizabeth College student, Johanna Acs (centre), with her French teacher Nina Pavic (left), receiving the prize from

Dianne Bye, Honorary Consul of France for Tasmania.

Johanna joined other prize winners from each State in Australia to travel to New Caledonia for a week in April. See the report of Johanna's trip to New Caledonia below.

Elizabeth College is very proud Johanna's achievements and wishes her all the best in her future career of choice which will no doubt include her love of language and other cultures.

My New Caledonian Trip

Last year a group of French students from Tasmania sat a three hour exam in the Concours D’Entrecaseaux. Six were

shortlisted and did a further oral examination, from which the top three were awarded prizes.

I was lucky enough to receive the first prize, which was a trip to New Caledonia. My stay in Noumea was a great experience as I got to learn not only about French culture, but about the indigenous people of New Caledonia – the Kanaks.

After having spent the first night in Sydney due to technical difficulties with the plane, we arrived in Noumea, where it was incredibly humid. In the following days each student stayed with a host family, and attended classes with their host sibling in the mornings.

The schools are based on the French system, and generally the days are rather long and the students work very hard. The afternoons were filled with cultural and recreational activities such as museum visits, snorkelling and shopping. Overall, it was interesting to experience the mix of French and Polynesian culture on the island of New Caledonia.

I encourage anyone with even the slightest interest in other cultures or travel to pursue a foreign language, as similar opportunities may present themselves to you.

Italian Students play Bocce

Cultural activities play a big part in learning a language at our college. As part of the unit on sport and culture in

Italy, the Italian students recently learned how to play the Italian version of bowls, “Bocce”. Two Italian exchange students joined us for this activity.

Harmony Day Celebrations - A Celebration of Cultures

This event was held on Wednesday the 23rd of March. Despite all the planning we could not influence the weather

on the day. Rain forced the event to be held in the College Cafeteria rather than the open space of the deck areas in front of the Library and T block.

Despite the more confined space the variety of food that was served up to showcase the diversity of cultures was not dampened. The teachers who cooked ‘the sausages from around the world’ battled the wind and the showers to feed a hungry horde which was sheltering under a temporary shelter. Roo burgers were also a hit with all 100 burgers going in the first few minutes.

Inside the cafeteria former Elizabeth College student, Chris Coleman, who is embarking on a solo musical career, entertained the students with his brand of music. He was followed by the ‘Ben Wells and Middle Names’ band, who are also past students, and are breaking into the local and interstate music scenes.

The students were treated to fine music, a wide variety of foods which was served up by teachers and prepared by students in the VET hospitality (Mary Young’s), beginners French class (Nina Pavic’s) as well as the cafeteria staff. Highlight of the event was the annual spaghetti eating competition. The event was downsized due to the weather but the students and teachers and college staff shared an event in harmony as strong as ever. Harmony Day Coordinator Joe Pavic.
