Mantua VillageThese are exciting times for the

Village of Mantua, with the opening ofnumerous new businesses in town, it givesthe Village something to shout about as wewelcome in 2010. As, it is the first time in avery long time that the vast majority of ourstore fronts are full!! Wow!! That is somethingto be excited about. So, help me welcome ourrecent new businesses, “Jake’s” at the familiar“Past Times” location on Prospect Street, (ifyou haven’t had a chance to visit them yet, Ihighly recommend trying their burgers), wealso have “Head to Toe Massage” onProspect Street, along with “All ThatSparkles”, stop in and see their handmadesterling silver and Swarovski crystal jewelry, also welcome to “Budget Beds” on MainStreet selling mattresses and bedroomfurniture.

Recently, future Eagle Scout CodyCleary representing Scout troop 575contributed to our outstanding Village trailsystem by installing a handicap accessibleobservation deck overlooking our scenicGlacial Esker pond. This attractive deckprovides a vantage point to view wildlife, birdwatch, and watch sunsets! You can find thisnext to Rotary Grove picnic area off of OrchardStreet. During these snowy winter monthsyou can enjoy cross country skiing on ourwonderfully scenic trail system.

This last spring I was approachedby Hiram Village and asked if we wouldconsider providing dispatch services forHiram Village Police dept, this also wouldinclude Fire, and Emergency Medical Servicesfor Hiram Village and Hiram Township as well. After much collaboration with our own ChiefBuchert, Hiram’s Police Chief, Fire Chief,Mayor and both Mantua and Hiram VillageCouncil I am happy to report that this is nowa reality!! We the Village of Mantua havecontracted with Hiram Village beginning Jan1st to provide this service. By providing thisservice we are partnering and supporting ouroverall community, and increasing our Villagerevenue as well.

Through recent meetings withCongressman La Tourette and his Chief ofStaff I have been busy seeking Federal fundsto aid in the development of future projectsfor the Village of Mantua these Federal fundswill address our ageing 100 year plusinfrastructure and renewal of our Main Street.

I have had a great concern for ourresidential streets as well. However, sinceFederal funds can only be used on federally

Village and Township Updatesdesignated projects I am unable to utilize thesefunds for this purpose. That is why I am sopleased about this recent development. Thisopportunity will prove to be a benefit to usall, however, it will require all of us and I domean all of us to make this a reality! It’s myhope that during January Council meetingVillage Council will approve an ordinance toplace on the May ballot and opportunity forthe citizens of the Village to save 6% off OhioEdison’s electric supply charges on theirmonthly utility bill, small businesses will save4%. This opportunity also contains anotheropportunity within it, for the Village ofMantua should the ballot issue pass. Oncethe ballot issue passes the Village will receivefrom First Energy Solutions a one time grantamount of $50,000. I am asking Village Councilto set aside these funds for the repair of ourresidential streets. As we go through thisprocess together should you have anyquestions regarding this please do nothesitate to contact me.

As if these aren’t enough goodreasons for our small Village to be excitedabout as we enter into 2010, did you know wehave been placed on the map in the worldarena too!! Many of us remember playingwith a Duncan yo yo when we were kids, well, one of our own Hank Freeman, who representsDuncan is the National yo yo Champion andThird in the World, Hank has even designeda yo yo that Duncan is marketing as the HankFreeman yo yo. I am told that in his sportHank is a rock star with swarming fanseverywhere he goes. What a greataccomplishment for one of our young men, when Hank is announced in Singapore, orOrlando he is introduced along with his hometown of Mantua Village, Ohio!! Thank-youHank! for promoting and representing, so well, the Village of Mantua. Well that’s all the newsfor now, wishing you a prosperous, healthyand exceedingly happy New Year!!
