Jesus modeled healthy relationships that were fueledby (ratherthan in competition with) his love for God.

Mark 1:35-39Very early in the morning, while it was still dark,

Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a

solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his

companions went to look for him, and when they

found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking

for you!" Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere

elseto the nearby villagesso I can preach

there also. That is why I have come."39

    So he

traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their

    synagogues and driving out demons.

Holiness points to God and love. But when pride consumes us, we

    can become holier-than-thou.

    :

    John 4:5-2617

The woman answered and said, I have no

husband. Jesus said to her, You have well said, I

    have no husband,18

    for you have had five

husbands, and the one whom you now have is not

your husband; in that you spoke truly. 23

Butthe hour is coming, and now is, when the true

worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and

truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship

    Him.24

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him

must worship in spirit and truth.

Have six people read these scriptures out loud:Mark1:35-39, Matthew 14:23, Luke 5:16, Luke 6:12, Luke

    9:28, Mark 6:46.

These scriptures show Jesus persistent habit ofgetting alone with His Father. Why was this so

    important to Him?

What does the word idolatry mean to you? What isan idol?

Read Exodus 20:3-4. How does this relate to Jesuspriorities in relationship?

Read John 8:28-29. How do you think Jesus lifeflowed out of his relationship with God?

Read Luke 14:25. What is your reaction to thispassage? What did Jesus mean by hate?

How do we love intensely, like Jesus commands inJohn 15:13, but also follow his command to hate all

    those people in our lives?

Are there things or relationships that you are puttingbefore God?

At what point does a relationship become an idol?

What does the phrase holy man provoke in you?Have you known men or women who live up to that

    phrase?

What does the phrase holier-than-thou provoke inyou? Without giving names or specifics, has your path

intersected with people who could be described this

    way?

What does the word holy mean? Read John 4:5-26. Does this woman see Jesus as a holy

    man?

Read Luke 18:10-13. This man clearly thinkshes holy.Is he? Why or why not?

What is the difference between being holy and beingholier-than-thou?

Read Ephesians 5:1-11. Why is it important to pursueholiness?

Does God expect perfect behavior from us? What doeshe expect?

Have you ever tried to either hide or avoid holiness? Have you ever pretended to be holier than you are? Is God more concerned with behavior or heart? Does

    your life reflect your answer?

Many of us struggle with how we can hold our brothers and sisters

accountable, and still encourage them without judging. Jesus models how.

Mark 10:17-2921Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said

to him, One thing you lack: Go your way, sell

whatever you have and give to the poor, and you

will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up

    the cross, and follow Me.22

    But he was sad at

this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had

    great possessions.

Colossians 1:28We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching

everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present

    everyone perfect in Christ.

We are able to forgive others because we have been forgiven so

profoundly and fully by God. But if were honest, we have questions.

    :

    Matthew 18:21-3521

Then Peter came to Him and said, Lord, how

often shall my brother sin against me, and I

forgive him? Up to seven times?22

Jesus said to him, I do not say to you, up to

seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

    Matthew 6:14-1514

For if you forgive men their trespasses, your

heavenly Father will also forgive you.15

    But if you

do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will

    your Father forgive your trespasses.

Have you ever felt judged by someone? What wasthe result?

Have you ever judged someone? What were yourmotives?

Read Mark 10:17-29 aloud once or twice in yourcommunity.

What is the man asking for? Read Colossians 1:28, Hebrews 3:13, and 2Corinthians 13:5. What do these verses add to the

    conversation about accountability?

What do you think Jesus motives were in telling thisman something very difficult for him to hear?

What is the difference between accountability andjudgment?

Are you comfortable letting people walk away withthe truth of scripture, or do you feel like it is your job

to convince them? How does Hebrews 4:12 speak

into this? Do you ever try to encourage and stretch friends in

their pursuit of following Christ? Why or why not?

Do you have anyone in your life that you ask to keepyou accountable, or ask for honest feedback from?

Read Matthew 18:21-35. Then flip over toMatthew 6:14-15. From these passages, what

    motivates forgiveness?

How does Jesus death on the cross relate to ourforgiveness?

How does repentance factor into forgiveness? Read Luke 17:3-4 and Luke 23:34. How do these

verses add to your discussion about repentance?

To most people, forgiveness is about reconciling arelationship. Is this statement true?

Does bitterness or fear ever stop you fromforgiving?

Is forgiveness a process or a choice? Do you walk freely in the forgiveness that God

    offers us?

How can remembering Gods grace help us chooseto forgive?

How can we forgive while still making wisedecisions about the people we choose to spend

    our lives with?

What will you do to counteract bitterness andresentment?
