The annual Harvest Ball was held on November 1 at the Majestic Ballroom in Bellingham. Approximately

seventy-five people attended this year’s Harvest Ball which was a chance to enjoy the company of all our friends at their finest. The men did their best to wipe the battlefield grime from their uniforms, while some took it as opportu-nity to debut new uniform additions; while others still were dressed to the nines. The ladies and children were dressed in their most beautiful clothing befitting their personas. Confederate Seamstress Linda Myers stated she en-joyed the Ball, “partly it is a chance to see friends again, also it is fun dressing up and I really do love the old dances.”

The gathering began with a Dessert Buffet Social; we shared and sampled many delicious treats. Sgt.

Rounds, 15th Alabama, noted, “It was the chance to get together with friends, share conversation, and eat stuff I know I shouldn't.”

The dance was led by WCWA-favorite, caller Marlin Prowell. He was assisted by his lovely wife, Virginia.

The band was the Toad Mountain Ramblers: Mike Schway plays fiddle, Clyde Curley plays guitar, and Dave Nerad plays banjo and mandolin. They have all played dances for at least twenty years.

. The dancing began with the traditional Grand March in which all in the Hall joined in. Throughout the eve-

ning, we were led in reels, squares and contra dances as well as waltzes, all somewhat traditional to the era of history we portray.

We learned to waltz starting with the Circle Waltz, a mixer where the Ladies are passed around the circle of

Gents and stop to waltz with every 4th partner. Another crowd favorite is the 9 Pin Reel alternately known as the 1st Sergeants’ Sashay thanks to 1st Sergeant

Alred, 26th NC, & 1st Sergeant Newton, 15th Alabama. We were introduced to a fun but challenging new dance. Marlin explained. “I actually don't know a title for

the square you are describing. In my head, I call it ‘Corner - Partner - Opposite Square.’ Dance calling is very much an oral tradition. I have a couple of hundred dances, and I have collected all of them by dancing them first and then writing down the ones I like. Most of the time, I get the name of the dance and the dance author from the caller, but sometimes I forget, and some of them, like ‘Corner - Partner - Opposite Square’ are traditional squares whose origin is lost.” “‘Corner - Partner - Opposite Square’ is also different from most of the dances I do. It uses "hash calling," which means that I am making up the dance on the fly. Most dances have a set pattern that consistently repeats, but not ‘Corner - Partner - Opposite Square.’ I know the basic idea of the dance, and I know some things I want to do in the dance, but I don't know exactly what will happen each time through the dance. I make up calls as I go, and it's my job to get everyone back home at the end of each dance cycle. It's as much fun for me as it is for the danc-ers. Nobody knows exactly how the dance will go.” Much as it sounds, we had great fun figuring out whom Marlin was going to have us swing elbows with next. The Harvest Ball was extensively photographed by a reporter from the Bellingham Herald and will be fea-tured in an upcoming Herald magazine available in February at Whatcom County Haggens. First time Harvest Ball attendee, Dave Heath, 76th Pa, summed up, “the ball was ...well... a ball. Did you see that couple standing at the window early in the evening? Not in period attire...she was mesmerized by us. I did a take-two on the whole thing...there we were, ladies in beautiful flowing gowns, men in dress uniform, buttons and leather polished, dancing to period music in a very appropriate hall. Laughter and smiles as plentiful as ticks on a

Brigade Commander Reports- Union-There will be minor adjustments in the battle line made due to the new units. The year was fun and many good times were had by all. They will continue to work at improving all aspects of the brigade. They are looking forward to next year. Confederate-This year the brigade had a great time. They are looking forward to next year. It looks like a good schedule for 2009 but know that the economy may influence event participation but hopefully not. Realize that the price of powder/caps has skyrocketed. Marblemount is on the schedule and everyone is invited to attend. Committee Reports- Event Planning Committee-E-Mail from Howard-Ferndale/Hovander Battle Event submitted a request to the EPC for 2010 and for the Harvest Ball in Bellingham -2010. Date of birth and date of death *Caisson is also available for use if informed in advance-Gil Bridges would be the contact for the Caisson. Any questions or changes to proposal, call

Bernie at #206-772-6285. He has no email

address. This proposal will be voted on in January. A motion was made- I move that the WCWA doesn't engage in activities where food or beverages are served to the public. It was 2nded, discussed and approved by the board. – (Note: This is regarding Ladies portraying teas at events and the public wanting to partake in it. ) Good of the Order: Past Event Reports- Auburn Parade-30 infantry and 9 Cavalry participated in it. Grand Harvest Ball- No Brigade Commanders were present. Attendance was lower so this event did not break even. Those who were in attendance had a great time. WCWA dancers and balls are becoming known by the public. These dances and balls are being publicized and featured in articles. This is another avenue to publicize and promote the WCWA. Veteran's Ceremony in Bothell- It went well and was on the 6:00 news. Upcoming Events: Christmas at Ft. Steilacoom- December 13, 4:00-7:30. It is pre-civil war and there is no interaction with the public, you just engage in appropriate scenarios of the time. General Membership/Family Ball-February 21-More information will be forthcoming. Marblemount-April 24-26- Please let Bonnie

know if you would be willing to do a hands on presentation in the community center on a Civil War skill or activity. There will be a formal ladies' tea at Marblemount. All members of WCWA, both Union and Confederate are welcome and encouraged to participate in the Marblemount event. The community center in Marblemount has all ready been promised to the WCWA for use during this event. Unit Reports: 26th North Carolina-Award Banquet is on November 22. 4th US-Noticing that some members are not getting both pages of the application in. Perhaps the two pages that make up the application could be made into a Front/Back Page that would be accessible from the website. Announcements: Membership cards will be forthcoming, they

have been ordered. A new Sutler will be coming to the WCWA

events. The paperwork has been sent in and

approval given. They will not be at every event

this first year. It will be ran by Robert and

Debbie of the Berdan

Sharpshooters. WCWA would like to express its appreciation to Cindy Easterson for being the club treasurer for these many years and for the many other contributions you have made to the WCWA club members. Note of Appreciation to WCWA . It seems as if the WCWA is getting closer, we are more one club now than ever before. It has helped me make it through these last 6 years. Bonnie (cont’d page 9)

Reminder-The death of a re-enactor on the battlefield back east should remind all of us that gun safety should be observed and followed at all times, whether at an event or not, Guns are weapons and should be inspected and respected and used appropriately. Please remember that the WCWA members are always there for one another. There is a positive attitude and acceptance of the club members to one another. Much cohesiveness has come about because of this acceptance of one another and our shared passion for our hobby. Spectators are impressed with our events and our honest portrayal of the Civil War era. As times get tough, please keep these thoughts in your mind. WCWA General Mem-bership Board and Executive Board. Things to Ponder-Quality of events, Priority and Commitment to the WCWA, and how much participation, you/your unit are willing to make to insure the success of the club. Peter Jenson's address is not included in the

Dispatch to let him know I am interested in getting

involved in a sing a long. I'd like to offer back up

guitar and banjo. I would suggest we have a

location we always have this and a set time and

day so people get use to doing it and not have it at

a different place and time every time. Also do this

every event like we do anything else that is well

attended. A song book published on line for

everyone to print off would be smart.

Also Bruce Smith's address in not there. I used to

play a trombone if someone has one I can use.

Items of Note

Greetings Veterans Day Parade Participant:

Thank you for your participation in Auburn’s 43rd annual Veterans Day Parade & Observance! We were fortunate that

the weather cooperated; I think we even saw a little sun throughout the day!! We had 208 parade entries, nearly

6,000 parade participants and an estimated 25,000 spectators.

Thanks to your support, the mile-long parade was a patriotic salute to both active military units and veteran march-

ing groups. We were thrilled to have a military fly-over by a C-17 as well as the entertainment from 32 marching

bands and performances from drill teams and dance troops. Antique military vehicles, decorated floats, scouting

units, community groups, animal units, and the addition of antique and classic cars rounded out the day for a spec-

tacular parade.

The Auburn Veterans Day Parade will be featured on Auburn’s Cable Channel 21 and in early December you may pur-

chase a DVD of the parade by visiting the City’s official website. Here’s a direct link to the order form: http://

WANTED: MUSICIANS - BLUE & GRAY

Some of us have discussed organizing a WCWA musical ensemble to play Amererican Civil Wa-era music beginning with the 2009 re-enactment season. Oregon has such a group

that goes over well with the public and reenactors alike. To make up such a band instru-mentation beyond trumpets/cornets will be needed. To that end I have personally pur-

chased a rotary baritone horn, a rotary tuba and a pair of hand cymbals.

Considering the distances between most of us in the Pacific Northwest, regular rehearsal sessions will likely not be feasable. Individual performers will have to practice at home,

the get together on the event site prior to a performance. Musical arrangements will be dis-bursed via the mail and/or the internet.

Give us your input on this idea.

Let's play!!!!!
