    The holidays were a blessing--- But Life Goes On!

    The holidays are over, the greetings andsalutations have endedwe have closedthe books on 2004. The year endactivities always bring extra work andlong hours but it also brings extrablessings and a nearness to God thatonly sharing and giving can bring. Itwas a glorious experience and we trulyenjoyed every minute of it.

    I do not have the words or the ability toexpress my heart felt appreciation to allof you who prayed, volunteered, gave

    your gifts in-kind and financial supportto the Lord through the AnchorageGospel Rescue Mission this past year.We could not have accomplished thethings we did without your help.

    But, Life Goes On at the Mission. Tothe homeless people that use ourfacilities, Christmas is just another dayfor them to be alone and in need. Theirneed is food and shelter the next day

    and the day after that. So ourresponsibility is to keep the doors openand provide good nourishing meals onthe table, hot showers, clean clothing

    and a warm bed, for their immediateneeds. We meet physical needs first sothat we may have the opportunity tomeet spiritual needs of the people weserve; and we do take advantage of thisopportunity.

    The staff does their very best to be anexample of their faith by their life style,personal help and one on one sharing of their own personal faith in Christ. Everynight we have a Chapel service wherethe Gospel is presented and the peoplehave the opportunity to respond andmake a commitment of their life toJesus Christ. We have a Chaplain onduty to help those that make thiscommitment.

    Yes, Life Goes On at the Mission andwe need your continued faithfulness tostand with us, especially with yourprayers.

    We meet physical needsso that we may have theopportunity to meetspiritual needs

    Jesus is the Answer

    When I began my life with Jesus, I camewith a needle in my arm. I was 19, and I wasa mess in every possible way.

    Soon after my New Life started the drugsseemed to fall away. I was pretty pleasedabout that. However, within five years mylife was spiraling out of control again. Idesperately wanted to be changed into agodly young man but as the trials of lifecame I reverted back to my old ways. I wastold, by those who observed my problems,Jesus is the answer!

    For too many years, I deeply resented what Ithought was a superficial clich from peoplewho were more bothered by my behavior

    than concerned about me. I eventuallylearned that I could not have been morewrong.

    The Lord began to show me that the biggestsin in my life was not the drugs or alcoholthat I was using to destroy my life andfamily; my biggest sin was that I wasrefusing to love anyone but me. And, oddly,I was ultimately shown this, not by beingrepeatedly told I was sinning but by beingcontinually loved by Jesus!

    One day I woke up to the fact that all thehard times that had come in my life were notproofs that the Lord was mad at me; Theywere proofs that he loved me, for Goddisciplines those He loves! (Heb. 12:6)

    Once I saw the extent of the Lords love forme, I realized what had been told me allalong: Jesus is the answer! My deep seatedself love became less as I realized the loveGod had for me.

    A large part of what we do in ourNewLife program is to help people see thelove of Jesus; without that they can neverovercome their bondage to addictions.

    D o n B e t t i s

    On Forgotten Mens Street He lies in a doorway, His hat on his face His clothes is all ruined, His shoes in disgrace

    He can freeze in the winter,Fry in the heat,For nobody cares,On Forgotten Mens Street.

    Let him lie in the bed His own hands have made,

    Haul him from the doorwayWith a shovel and spade,To a grave in the fieldThe story complete,

    Just another dead man,On Forgotten Mens Street.

    Yet down in each heart On Forgotten Mens Street The memory of loved onesThat made life sweet:Who knows the battleThat doomed him to die,Who senses the heartache,Or fathoms the signThat broke his proud heart,

    And directed his feet Downward and downward To Forgotten Mens Street.

    Lo, one Man is walkingForgotten Mens Street The hem of Whose garment With healing is sweet.

    It sweeps as it passesThe doorways of pain;

    He bringeth bright sunshine,Where all had been rain.

    For hope is rebornWhere the Savior has been;

    The grace of His presence Itll make the heart clean. His power is the answer So full and completeFor the down-and-out manOn Forgotten Mens Street.
