Fr. Norman SchwartzSERVE GOD IN YOUR FAMILY

As I grow older and as my direct family is less and less I think of how important family is to individuals. We are always distracted by numerous obligations and frequent frustrations and we may sometimes wind

up taking our families for granted.

Our families are precious gifts from God. If we are to be the men and women close to God then we must care for them and make time for our loved ones in spite of all those demands on our time. Time is the

most precious gift to give your family; time exclusively just for them. Yes, we have busy lives, distractions and temptations are greater now with all those technical toys around

us. But God wants us in loving families as He is a family of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. My family wasn’t perfect and I’m sure neither is yours, but in spite of the challenges, obligations and hurt feelings God gave me many blessings which I realize today. Your husband/wife, children and babies are a priceless treasure temporarily loaned to you from God. Family is more important than any other thing is

existence – more than the job, the hurts, the “better or for worse” “in sickness and in health.”

Treasure, nurture and love your family, they are a gift from God. Thank Him for this most precious gift.

CREATING A NEW YEAR

This New Year of 2015 presents us with a lot of challenges and opportunities. Three that I would like to focus upon are: Ecumenical relations, interracial understanding and harmony and the protection of our unborn children.

Pope Francis is leading the way for our church in his identifying of ecumenical understanding and cooperation as a key theme of his Papacy. He has personally met with the Russian Orthodox Patriarch, with Protestant and Anglican leaders, with Islamic Imams, and Jewish Chief Rabbis. He has also called upon Catholics to recognize the good and the truth that exists in all of the great world religions even those that appear somewhat distant from us such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Taoism. His common theme is that the world needs the cooperative spiritual forces of all religions in order to move forward in world compassion, hope and fellowship. We are to be united in a common cause that requires all of our spiritual wisdom, courage and leadership. One practical goal for all of us might be to better educate ourselves concerning the great world spiritualities and how we might together strengthen a spiritual worldview as opposed to a secular, anti-spiritual and materialist one. Parishioner participation in our Inter-Faith Celebration with Temple Beth El (February 20-22) is a good place to start.

Martin Luther King national holiday presents us with another spiritual growth opportunity as we prayerfully confront the social sin of color based prejudice, discrimination and racism. The elimination of social sin is not just the responsibility of government or social organizations but is, first and foremost, an individual spiritual responsibility. I would like to suggest that as Catholic individuals and families that we model a commitment to equality of opportunity and real social interaction that gets past racial differences to respect the God given worth and dignity of each person. Only when we try to regard and understand others as God does will we have 20/20 vision.

This month also includes a special Day of Prayer for Unborn Children, Thursday January 22. On that day we will especially pray for the safety of unborn children everywhere. As the most vulnerable among us, our children need our resistance to abortion, poverty, hunger, domestic violence and all other social evils that threaten and endanger our unborn children. They also need our positive involvement to help pregnant mothers with emotional and financial support. Please consider supporting our local Catholic Charities affiliate “Birthline/Lifeline” as a practical way of saying “Yes” to Life.

- Msgr. Michael D. McGraw

Events this week

Over 10 years ago, Fr. Michael Driscoll was operated on for melanoma at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Hospital (Mass General) in Boston. It was an aggressive, advanced case of melanoma, stage 4 cancer. Because of the great doctors in Boston, and the powerful prayers of many people to Titus Brandsma, there appears to be a complete cure of the cancer, which had metastasized from the forehead to the neck. The Vatican doctors have examined all the medical records and have declared the outcome “beyond medical explanation.” Presently, the Diocesan process to examine the witnesses has begun. We are seeking members of the Diocese who prayed for a cure, through the intercession of Titus Brandsma, a Dutch Carmelite, killed at Dachau in 1942. Please call the St. Jude Parish Office, 561-392-8172, so that we can get names, addresses and phone numbers for the Palm Beach Diocesan officials to contact each of you for testimony. It is important that we do this as quickly as possible.

Cause of Blessed: Titus Brandsma, O.Carm.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY

Current Events and Role Models for the YouthWhen we start a new year, we like to put the previous year in review, and we look forward to the next. The youth is not immune to this phenomenon… especially when it comes to current events, pop culture and the “IT” person of the year. My nomination for 2014: Taylor Swift. Why? Because she can “Shake It Off”. With last year’s turmoil and attacks, on personal and national levels, it was hard to find something or someone to focus and to give us a glimmer of hope that things will always turn out for the best and everything that happens is God’s plan. We hope that we could have started 2015 on a positive note. Unfortunately, we did not. Just look at the recent headlines. We still must be aware of the attacks on the morality of the church (abortion and homosexual marriage), gun control and terrorism (Paris), gun control and bullying (police cases-both), movies with awful messages (Fifty Shades) and role models with standards less than ours that others admire (Kim and Kanye?). Of course, as Catholics we have Pope Francis, who with his humility, joy and charisma has managed to not only shake up the church, but the world. Teens also have Taylor Swift with a message not unlike that of Pope Francis. Whatever your personal opinion of Taylor Swift, you may have one thing that is certain: she has a God given talent of song writing and an amazing sense of self identity with the power to be very influential to, not just the youth, but everyone... That is a role model if there ever is one. First there is the catchy tune that everyone follows. There is also the beat, which even the most uncoordinated can dance to, and then there are the lyrics, a positive message which everyone can relate to. I bet if more people didn’t take things so personally and started “Shaking it off” the world would have less depressed, angry, gun toting people and in a be better place. In 2015, I’m going to take Taylor Swift’s advice and “Shake it off!” Are you?? Besides, who doesn’t feel good when they sing and dance? “May our tears be turned into dancing!” (Psalm 30:11)

Do you know that you areCreated in the image & likeness of God?Creation is sacred and reflects God’s glory... including our bodies. Because we are a unity of body and soul, what we do with our bodies affects our souls. The call to love, communion, and life involves the entire being of man and woman, body and soul. Our sexuality has the power to create new life. That is why we are called to the virtue of chastity, according to whether we are married or not. Chastity says “yes” to the truth that all of us are created in the image of God and “yes” to the call to love as God loves. That is why Love is our Mission.
