After decades of deserted promises and relent-less efforts to advocate for imperative upgrades to the Strathmore hospital, the NDP government vowed to allocate several millions of dollars to an emergency room expansion.

Minister of Health Sarah Hoffman directed a let-ter on Dec. 16, 2015 to Strathmore-Brooks MLA Derek Fildebrandt, who championed for the proj-ect in the legislature since taking office, stating that an estimated $2.8 million will be made avail-able through the Infrastructure Maintenance Pro-gram (IMP) for Alberta Health Services (AHS) to forge ahead with an expansion.

The announcement was welcomed among lo-cal officials, but similar assurances in the past by previous governments, continue to spread doubt about the reality of the promised funds.

“This wouldn’t be the first, second, or third time that we’ve heard this will happen, and I’m cau-tiously optimistic that this will go forward, but we’ve been promised and disappointed too many times to really be sure,” said Fildebrandt.

“We’ve been banging away pretty hard trying to get answers out of the government, and so far we haven’t gotten much clarity at all. But this letter is the first real positive sign in some time that we could see some action on our local health care in-frastructure. I’m certainly biased because I’m the MLA for Strathmore, but I think that the second busiest emergency room in rural Alberta… should be at the top of the list.”

The Strathmore hospital is recognized as the second busiest emergency room in rural Alberta – seeing upwards of 30,000 patients annually – and hasn’t received any modification or expansion since its construction in 1985. The previous gov-ernment assured local officials that funding would be made available for improved parking, resources for seniors and handicapped individuals, and ma-jor hospital improvements. However, such prom-ises never came to fruition and frustrations contin-ued to grow.

According to Timothy Wilson, press secretary with the office of the minister of health, AHS will be utilizing the funds to undertake an expansion of the emergency department, diagnostic imaging, lab services, pharmacy and home care.

Judy Pethick’s prominent personal-ity and her overt compassion made a discernible impact on the community in the three decades she ran the Gold-en West Jewelry store in Strathmore – the town’s second oldest business. Described as a strong willed woman whose selfless acts and community involvement often took precedence over business hours, her recent pass-ing tugged at the heartstrings of hun-dreds of residents who flocked to the store to pay their respects. Unable to continue on with the business, her only child Wendy Rubner opted to sell the business to local pastor and owner of Ringneck Kennels, Elizabeth Karp, who plans to keep the store, and Pethick’s memory, alive.

“All throughout my life, my mom has always been doing some kind of busi-ness to keep herself busy, and some-times two or three just like Elizabeth, and Strathmore needed a jewelry store,” Rubner said. “The community has been absolutely incredible. They supported her this whole time and it’s hard for me to find the words without getting emotional. When she passed, hundreds of people came into the store. I didn’t know the extent of what she did until I started hearing it from the community. I knew she was a good person and I knew she had love for everybody no matter of colour, race, or what they looked like, she never judged anybody and was always there for them and helped them out.”

Pethick and her family opened Gold-en West Jewelry in 1984 while she was still working at Rexall Drugs. The fol-lowing year she took on the store full-time, but it was her passion for the community, family members said, that kept her operating the store for 30 years. Rubner, who lives with her fam-ily in Calgary, was overwhelmed when community members shared stories about her mother closing the store to be with a family when their loved one was in the hospital, attending church to help somebody out when it wasn’t her denomination, and organizing pres-ents for an individual who lacked the funds to purchase them himself. While Karp never had the pleasure of meet-ing Pethick, her curiosity piqued upon meeting Rubner. With the creation of a homeless shelter and other ministries – such as the bread ministry – at the Har-vest Healing Centre church requiring ongoing funds, Karp came the conclu-sion that the purchase of the renowned business would not only preserve part of Strathmore’s history and plug a void, but also accumulate ongoing funds for services crucial to the wellbeing of the community – the embodiment of Peth-ick’s beliefs.

“Not a lot of businesses have been here for 30 years so it’s part of Strath-more’s history,” said Karp. “I didn’t know her personally… but some friends of mine did. They said she was quite a character. If she made up her mind she made up her mind and you just didn’t mess with it. I didn’t know her, but I said I would keep her pic-ture… we’ll put it up in the store.”

While the essence of the store will remain intact, Karp said the store has already undergone significant changes. In addition to a new colour scheme to decor, and some additional brands, upon its opening the store will also be subject to a name change to the Strath-more Jewelry Boutique. The store is an-ticipated to hold its grand opening on Feb. 8 just in time for Valentine’s Day. Although the outcome resulted from mournful circumstances, Rubner is con-fident the new ownership will continue on the store’s prosperity.

“For me it was very difficult to have to close, so it’s bittersweet, but at the same time I can’t be here but I want it to succeed, and it’s perfect, she’s per-fect,” said Rubner of handing over the business to Karp.

“It’s a big decision, and the store needs that nurturing so locally it’s ex-actly what the store needs. This is ex-actly what my mom would’ve wanted.”

Rosebud School of the Arts will host the first Bloomin’ Playwrights Festival, Jan. 23-24, in Rosebud’s Akokiniskway Gallery, featuring dramatic readings of plays by two ad-vanced students of the school’s playwriting course.

Leah Herne, a RSA instructor and Rosebud resident, wrote a play about Lola, a woman on life support after falling asleep at the wheel of her car. Loved ones gather around, unaware Lola can hear every word they say. Asleep at the Wheel will be read Jan. 23.

Laird Salkeld, from Calgary, wrote Sorry Now and Then, about the fragile reconciliation between two brothers. One brother says he’s sorry – but it might not last. Salkeld’s play will be read Jan. 24.

This new festival grew from the Budding Playwrights Festi-val, which Rosebud School of the Arts hosts each spring. The Budding event presents full readings of the one-act plays by students in the beginners’ level, but only partial readings of the full-length plays by students in the advanced class.

After last year’s Budding festival, when Rosebud resident Norma Roth heard those partial plays read, she decided she wanted to hear more.

“Laird’s play particularly, I wanted to hear what happened,” she said. “I thought, ‘I’ve just got to know what’s going on.’”

When she asked Salkeld, “Do you think you could have it done for winter and we could see it?” he said he’d also wanted to see other full plays read. They asked Herne if her play could be ready too, and suddenly Roth had even more than she’d hoped for.

“I wasn’t really thinking let’s do a festival,” she said, “but two nights makes it a festival.”

These plays have special interest for us in southern Alber-ta, she said, because they’re written by people who live near us, and are about people like us. And these stories might change us, in big or small ways.

Bloomin’ Playwrights Festival will be held in Rosebud’s Akokiniskway Gallery, Saturday, Jan. 23 and Sunday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. Admission is free. See the Bloomin’ Arts Festival or Rosebud School of the Arts Facebook pages for more infor-mation.

SNOW REMOVAL FROM SIDEWALKSCOMMUNITY STANDARDS BYLAW #13-05 (1) The owner or occupant of a private parcel of land adjacent

to a Sidewalk or Pathway that runs in front of the property or along the side of the property where:

(a) Such Sidewalk or Pathway runs parallel to and directly adjacent to a Street, or

Strathmore High School’s (SHS) Dance 25 and Dance 35 students presented “Sole Machine,” a high energy production with a technological theme from Jan. 7-9 at the school.

The program included 14 dancers, five students who assisted with logistical jobs, two special guest choreographers - Zaida Bahir from Hathor Belly Dance and Camille Shields from Pulse Studio - along with many other people who as-sisted in helping the show reach the stage.

Directed by Paula Richardson, the students expanded their knowledge of dance styles with the presentation of cane belly dancing, western, hoop, contemporary, electronic, and marionette dances, and some presented their skills with Poi, a tra-ditional New Zealand performance art that involves choreographed movements with balls attached to strings.

SHS presents ‘Sole Machine’

Each dance had a modern, technological twist from the use of light-up poi, strobe and coloured lights, videos, shadow dancing with screens, and the various musical arrangements.

“They have created new and exciting ways to use technol-ogy – hence the name of our show, Sole Machine,” Richard-son said in the director’s notes.

Several of the dances were choreographed by the students themselves and featured solos, duets, trios, and the entire dance class in uni-son.

“Sole Machine” was another fantastic show put on by SHS’s dance program. Overall, Richardson enjoyed produc-ing the show and was extremely im-pressed with the work the students had put forward.

Hoffman’s letter indicates the project is currently in the planning stages and is expected to commence in the 2016-2017 year. The letter also indicates that AHS identified major development of the Strathmore Health Centre as one of their many priority health capital projects, however, it remains in the early stages of planning at this point. The government is finalizing a business case for the Bassano Continuing Care and Health Centre project, and plans to raise the matter of a dialysis centre in Brooks with AHS – additional issues Fil-debrandt raised in the legislature.

The MLA had received a tour of the hospital previously and spent some time discussing the conditions with lo-cal doctors. While he said it proves dif-ficult to attract additional physicians to rural Alberta, he felt Strathmore’s doctors were committed to their jobs, patients, and the community. Howev-er, his office extended an invitation to the minister of health to tour the local health care infrastructure projects in the riding first hand.

“I appreciate that the province is broke - the province has no money - so it’s a matter of prioritizing spending,” he said. “My impression was that there were a lot of very busy hardworking individuals working in a space that ap-pears to be significantly out of date and badly in need of an upgrade. There are portables that have been attached to the building for well over a decade that people are expected to work in, that I would loathe to put my own employees in. So it’s extremely busy and crowd-ed… I don’t know how to describe it.”

While he added that the nosedive of the economy and a limitation of funds requires expectations to remain reason-able, he will continue to push for front-line health priorities in Strathmore.

Lil’s father Alfred Victor Fortemps was born in 1880 in Belgium, the young-est of a family of 10. His father Victor worked in the marble business, and in-sisted his family work with him. But Lil’s father had no interest in this type of work and left home at an early age, actually serv-ing with the Belgian Army in the Belgian Congo, before coming to North America.

He arrived in Vermont in 1902, then moved to Quebec where he met and married Lil’s mother Maria Bergeron, who was part of a family of 14. By this time Dad was 22 years old, and Maria was 14 years old. They had five chil-dren, and Lil was the last, born in Regina on Nov. 23, 1919. Her fa-ther served 4.5 years with the Canadian Army in World War One, and after his discharge moved the family to Calgary, where he initially worked in the marble business, before the Soldier’s Settlement Board found him a quarter section of land at Lyalta, and they moved there. Dad had never been a farmer and had no idea how to go about it, but he per-severed and they were able to live and work there for about 15 years.

Although Turner School was close to where Lil lived, she had to attend Chea-dle Buttes School through Grade 5, be-fore being sent back to Turner School for the next five years. In 1938, her fam-ily moved to Calgary, where Lil attended Crescent Heights High School until she graduated, then attended Normal School to become a teacher. On graduating she applied for a teacher’s position at Turn-er School where she taught for about a year. Some of the students she knew from previous years, and many were older than she was! For the next five years she taught at different schools in the surrounding districts, before getting married to Aksel Christian Gustavsen, a

Lil returned to teaching after their daughter Marlene was born. In later years, Marlene married Ken Hager, and this marriage pro-duced two boys - Todd and Troy. Lil soon found that Grade 1 students had great difficulty

reading, so she enrolled in Disabled Readers Courses at the University of Calgary. After one year, she moved to the University of Oregon to continue her studies, and graduated with a Bachelor of Education, and Master of Arts, for Disabled Readers, in 1969. On returning to Al-berta, she was appointed Su-pervisor of the Specialized Reading Programme in the County of Leduc. In order for Aksel to accompany Lil, he rented the farm out and they both moved to Leduc,

where Aksel was able to se-cure odd jobs in the area, as well as helping out at the Hussar farm as required. Lil thoroughly enjoyed her job and spent seven years in and around Leduc before moving to Standoff, where she pro-vided assistance to teachers of First Nations children. But this project didn’t succeed because of differences of opinion in Tribal education. So in 1992 she decided to re-tire to Strathmore. But after only five months of retire-ment, the Superintendent of Golden Hills School District, Gary McKinnon, asked if she would come back and teach Distant Learning in this area. She accepted and worked for another five years.

In 2002, her husband Aksel passed away from a heart at-tack, and she retired again. Lil spent four years at Lambert Village, then moved to Wheat-land Lodge after her daughter Marlene passed away from cancer in March 2015.

Since 2002, the town of Strathmore has grown to 13,200 residents. The num-ber of schools has really in-creased, compared to Hussar where their school will soon close for good. She is amazed at the number of Senior’s Care Residences now available.

Famed poet Robert Burns will once again receive a tribute in Strathmore, consisting of special Scottish traditions and raising funds allocated to the Freemasons, in one week’s time.

The annual Burns Supper is a global phenomenon that took shape after Burns’s death when nine of his friends gathered for dinner to celebrate his life in 1801, reciting his work, toasting his memory, and enjoying haggis – a Scottish savoury pudding containing sheep organs that will be served at the Strathmore Masonic Lodge #53 supper.

The event is the fraternal organization’s main fundraiser, and despite amassing trivial amounts of funds, it ensures other purposes within the community.

“Of course we do casinos and things like that, and they probably raise more money, but it’s important to do things like this… they’re increasing our visibility in the commu-nity,” said Gord Morck, senior warden of the Strathmore Ma-sonic Lodge #53. “It’s something to make Strathmore a more interesting community. The little quirky kind of things that people can enjoy.”

Money raised at the event will be donated to community causes, which have included the Air Cadets and higher edu-cation bursary funds in the past. Although the 50-member-strong organization sold 100 tickets last year, 120 tickets will be available for this year’s event being held at the Royal Canadian Legion in Strathmore for a second year. The fund-raiser will follow some same guidelines as in the past years, but the menu will include Cock-a-leekie soup, haggis, roast beef, and dessert. The celebration will also include bagpip-ers and the district deputy grand master who will do the ad-dress to the haggis and is originally from Scottland.

The Strathmore Masonic Lodge #53 Burns Supper will take place on Jan. 23 at the Royal Canadian Legion. Cocktails start at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased at the Royal Canadian Legion or by E-mailing Gord Morck at [email protected].

Following numerous complaints for the town to review the Taxi Bylaw and address health and safety issues per-taining to the local taxi industry last year, administration assembled a draft bylaw with changes to which they seek the cab companies’ input – an action receiving mixed emotions among such businesses.

Administration was tasked to focus their attention on Bylaw 08-25 early last August, when numerous complaints regarding the wheelchair accessibility, the inability of bylaw officers to enforce regulations, and the cleanliness of the vehicles emerged. As a result, local taxi companies received a letter, sent out on Dec. 21, 2015, informing the business owners of possible changes to the by-law and requesting their presence and input at a meeting on Jan. 19. While administration was reluctant to reveal details about the possible changes, as they are currently presented as a draft bylaw and have not yet been approved, it was said that changes are similar to the current Taxi Bylaw, with greater emphasis on requirements such as ve-hicle safety.

“I know what the changes are but I’m not willing to talk about it until we’ve gone over it with the taxi companies,” said Jennifer Sawatzky, municipal clerk with the Town of Strathmore.

“It’s not a negative thing, it’s a good thing because we’re trying to involve them in the direction that we would like to see the taxi companies in the future and most of it is around safety for commuters and people that use the companies.

It’s not uncommon. This is very com-mon. It’s just like in any other munici-pality in Alberta pretty much to have regulations around vehicle standards and driver expectations. It’s not a new thing we’re doing here.”

However, owner of Strathmore Econ-omy Taxis, Marty De Peuter, disagreed. Not in favour of a possible implementa-

Taxi Bylaw: town wants inputtion of wheelchair accessible require-ments and angered, in his opinion, by a lack of support from the town for his business, De Peuter said the meeting and changes should’ve been presented long before a draft proposal was cre-ated.

“We asked you for liaison between the town and the taxis, you’ve never fulfilled that and you have obligations in your own bylaw to fulfill and you have never fulfilled one of them, and you expect me as an owner operator to trust you now?” De Peuter said about the town council. “Get off the pot and figure it out with the taxi owner and operators before it goes to draft. While De Peuter is unaware of what the proposed changes will be, he felt his suggestions and input will have little effect on the final outcome. Al-though he said he has no problem with the notion of changes to the bylaw, he wants the town to protect its local cab companies – including protection against out-of-town taxicabs without a town business license operating in Strathmore.

The bylaw currently states that no person, partnership, or corporation shall carry on the business of operat-ing a taxi service in Strathmore unless the person, partnership, or corporation holds a current Town of Strathmore business license. Nonetheless, Strath-more’s taxi drivers said vehicles from other surrounding areas have been seen tending to customers in Strath-more without authorities questioning their presence. Agreeing that wheel-chair accessibility should not be the private companies’ responsibility and that action is required to deal with out-of-town cabs competing for business locally, Strathmore Shuttle owner and operator Brenda Jan is also in agree-ment with the town’s actions and their efforts to implement safer cleaner cabs.

“I agree with what they’re doing,” said Jan, who added she has always felt protected by the town. “I don’t know why he’s complaining. I want to see ve-hicles decaled, look professional, main-tained, approved by a licensed mechan-ic, inspected, and cleaned.”

According to Sawatzky no changes have been approved and the purpose of the meeting is to review the possible changes with the taxi companies and factor in their suggestions and views. The private meeting will take place on Jan. 19.

After inspiration emanated from a blog post, the Hope Bridges Society is embracing the concept to love yourself for the new season, with hopes of con-tinuing last year’s success that doubled in number of participants, showed a noticeable increase in volunteer efforts, and saw the swelling of the non-profit’s presence in Strathmore and Wheatland County.

Now that the program line-up has launched for 2016, the community-based initiative carried on some fan favourites along with a new drawing program and new facilitators. As reg-istrations nearly doubled since 2014, reaching almost 300, the organization faces rapidly growing demand and a re-quired proactive approach.

“Part of this season is to focus on res-olution, as in resolve to love yourself, and that’s something that we want to say quite a bit,” said Wanda Reinholdt, program coordinator with the Hope Bridges Society.

“We’ve been going out into the com-munity and our board has been doing a tremendous job doing presentations, doing a video, and we’ve had great response. But we need continued re-sponse. Our needs are bigger… and that’s why I say we need the community to come around us on a regular basis. We are working on being more inten-tional and going out and connecting with people.”

Reinholdt was motivated by a recent post submitted by the society’s blogger. After switching out Christmas decora-tions for Valentine’s decor, the theme to

love oneself, was a fail-safe choice for this season’s theme.

While much of the success experi-enced last year can be attributed to more community-based art projects – such as the painted quilts – the society will continue to educate the public on their projects and their organization.

Subsequent to an increase in par-ticipants and requests for specific measures, the Hope Bridges Society answered their patrons’ calls and estab-lished a Zentangle club that meets once a month. The programs also include Go Green Upcycling, Sing Your High Note, and Knitting and Crocheting Folk Art. New for 2016, residents will finally be able to participate in a Drawing: Studies in Perspective class – which had been requested previously.

Apart from the influx in registration, volunteers have also flocked to the soci-ety to donate their time. As of last year, the organization stood strong with 30 regular volunteers and more during special events. Reinholdt suspects the downswing in the economy may have contributed to the growth in interest.

“We already have a couple volunteers come to us out of the gate,” she said.

“It’s tough times for people. One of those individuals that lost their jobs in oil and gas came to us and said ‘you know what, I just want to volunteer with you guys.’ The people still want to give, and they want to feel like they’re doing something.”

The Pregnancy Care Center offers more than pregnancy tests and op-tions counseling. For those in need of services, resources, and emotional support, there’s help. In the midst of an uncertain economy, there are many who need assistance, but don’t know where to turn.

“Beth” has been coming to the centre for over a year. She had been pregnant twice before, both times choosing to place for adoption. This time, she came to the centre deter-mined to parent, but knew she was going to need help. Since her initial

visit, Beth has attended prenatal and parenting classes, begun financial planning with one of our counselors, and accessed our clothing room. She has also benefitted from resource re-ferrals for other organizations. Beth has worked hard from the start to develop a strong support network so that she can offer her child a safe and healthy environment.

For those feeling overwhelmed by a recent pregnancy, or have children and are in need of support, they can contact the centre by phone (403-269-3110) or e-mail. Help is available with resource information and referrals to meet a variety of needs - both practi-cal and emotional.

The Crowther Memorial Junior High School Cou-gars Grade 8 boys basketball team have used their size to their advantage in two tournaments, earning them two gold medal finishes with the latest coming in Brooks last weekend.

Head coach Matthew Laslo mentioned that you don’t know what to expect at this level as far as competition goes, and said they didn’t have a great game in the first one and managed to still win it, while they had a great game the next morning to get into the finals.

“We ended up playing Rosemary in the final,” said Laslo. “They’re a good team. They had a couple really good players and for the most part we were able to shut down their good players and scored when we needed to. Our big guys were scoring baskets.”

He added what factored into the win was the expe-rienced players from last season who are committed to working really hard.

“They play for each other,” said Laslo. “They work really hard in practice and when you work hard in practice it usually goes through to the results in the game. Coaching gives them some skills, but mostly it’s the players.”

Laslo’s Grade 9 team was in Calgary at the Rundle tournament last weekend as well, where they picked

up the consolation prize in what was an entertaining clash against Branton School.

“It was an amazing game,” said Laslo. “We were up 17 points at one point and the boys played really well and pulled it out as a team. We only won by one point, we were up four points with 30 seconds left and the kid off of Branton ran down and canned the three-pointer with eight seconds to go. It was a one-point game and we fought through the pressure and held on to the ball and luckily came out with a victory.”

So far this season the Grade 7 and 8 teams are un-defeated and the Grade 9’s are playing .500 basket-ball. Laslo thinks all the teams are competitive for their levels.

The CFR Bisons picked up a crucial two points with a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Jan 10, playing a defensively sound game compared to two nights prior, where they were caught playing from behind and lost to first place Red Deer 6-4.

Bisons head coach Sandy Henry thought it was pivotal that they turned it around against the Flames because it was good for the team mentally and al-lowed them to stay one point behind.

“Points are pretty critical right now,” said Henry. “We’ve got ourselves in a better spot now. We’ve got a couple of teams that have to win to keep up to us now and a couple teams looking at us in the rearview mirror. The division is so tight now that every point you get is either keeping you up with the leaders or if you don’t get them, you’re sitting down with the guys that are going to be battling to make a playoff spot.”

Henry thought it was important to jump on the Flames right off the get-go and that was key in their success for the rest of the game.

“I thought we got out on the Flames real quick,” said Henry. “They had a little trouble getting out of their end. We got the chances out of that, got out of the first period with a 1-0 lead and that was good for us mentally. From there we just built on that. In third period we asked them to be more defensively conscious. We thought we were maybe giving up too many odd man situations in the second period, maybe pushing too hard for the offense.”

According to Henry, he saw more dedication, no-ticing that the team made sure they were account-able and took the offense as it came.

Cole Clayton, Tyson Scott and Matt Halkovic scored in the win.

In Red Deer, the Bisons were down 5-2 halfway through the third, but Henry felt that wasn’t indica-tive of the how the team played.

“I think they took advantage of a couple of break-downs,” said Henry.

“I remember making the comment on the bench to the guys, ‘we can make a choice and roll over here or are we going to push back and see where it takes us.’ I think I liked the response at that point where we get the two quick goals back and honestly with lots of time left to get ourselves back in the game.”

He added that they will take this game as a learn-ing curve to know how to play a full 60 minutes and not just playing a solid 40 minutes and expect to win.

The Wheatland Kings were unable to ride the high from a 6-1 road win over Banff on Jan. 8 into their first contest against the Okotoks Bisons, losing 6-3 at home the following night.

The opening frame at home was tightly played by both teams but the Bisons were able to pot two by the end of the first period. After that, it seemed the Kings gave up too many odd man rushes, including one with two seconds left in the second period that put a dagger in any hopes of a comeback, the score being 5-1 at that point.

Kings dominate in Banff; sputter against Okotoks“We had a good start, we kept pace with them,” said as-

sistant coach Brett Hartos. “We got caught puck-watching a couple times and fell behind the eight ball. A couple bad penalties but the guys rebounded pretty well in the third, showing some good character and really made it a game. 6-3 wasn’t really indicative of the actual pace or the skill set that was involved in this game.”

Hartos said the turnovers were tough on the defense as they happened in tough situations.

“Okotoks is a quick team,” said Hartos. “They have quick foot speed and they move the puck really well. The biggest thing is they make you pay for your mistakes.”

Jacen Bracko had two goals, while Cole Busslinger has one goal in the loss.

Banff has had the Kings number this season, but Hartos said it was great to see them come out with more fight.

“It boosts the team morale,” he said. “It shows that we can play a shutdown game and play with a lead.”

Bracko had the hat trick, while Busslinger, Lucas Jones and Brooker Pretty Youngman supplied one each in the win.

The Kings will head to Okotoks for a rematch on Jan. 15 at 8 p.m. before hosting High River on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.

The Strathmore Minor Hockey Association novice players, the winners on this night, had the opportunity to participate in a shoot-to-win event in the first intermission with local Kings players Ryan Grasdahl and Brendan Moore where they all received a prize.

Kaia Borbandy’s aggres-sive style of play earned her a spot on the Zone 2 Big Country hockey team at the Alberta Winter Games next month.

The Langdon native is fol-lowing in the footsteps of her older sisters Emma and Tea-gan, who also played in the games and have been giving her valuable advice.

“I was excited because my sisters have all gone through it and I went to go watch it looks they had an awesome experience so I wanted to have that chance to experi-ence it,” said Borbandy, who plays for the Rocky Moun-tain Raiders bantam triple-A team.

Once she arrives at the games, she is looking for-ward to new experiences and the atmosphere at the four-day event. Borbandy hopes the event will help her with

future opportunities.“Talking with my sisters

and other people, they say it’s a really good experience,” said Borbandy. “They sepa-rate you from your families. I’ve never experienced that before. I think that will be a real eye opener because I’m excited for the opening cer-emonies and maybe get an invite to U16 if I do really well.”

While she said that she was nervous at tryouts, she was able to overcome her nerves and worked hard at being non-stop on the puck and being a team player.

However, she thinks there is work to be done before she heads out to the games.

“I feel I can do better go-ing for opportunities,” said Borbandy. “Sometimes I feel I give up on opportunities. I feel if I stay on my opportuni-ties I can generate a goal. Off ice, I feel just training, quick feet and shooting pucks will make me a better player.”

Zone 2’s head coach Hal-ey Irwin said it was a short evaluation camp and they were looking for players who compete and showed up consistently, and Borban-dy was able to fit that bill.

“For her, she could defi-nitely make plays,” said two-time Olympic gold medalist.

“She’s a good skater. Her head’s up and she really

likes to her use her team-mates and those are all posi-tive things. In terms of roles, we need every single player playing and that’s what we expect of her and consistent play every single game. We obviously want these girls to grow and develop.”

The 2016 Alberta Winter Games are from Feb. 13-16 in Medicine Hat.

PARIS, John PeterAugust 28, 1925 - January 6, 2016 John passed away at Strathmore Hospital. He was born to Jean Pierre and Elizabeth of Langdon, AB. He started school in Langdon and, at the age of 10, the family moved to Cheadle where he con-tinued his schooling at the Fairplay School and met the love of his life, Doris Drake. They were united in marriage on January 25, 1947 and spent 68 marvelous years together. John loved the farm and spent his life involved in agriculture, grain farming and raising livestock. He was also involved in real estate, eventually forming JonDor Real Estate. He devoted his life to his family and his community. John was the founding president of the Cheadle Lions Club, a long-time member of the Sodbusters, and an active supporter of his neighbourhood churches. Left to mourn his loss is his loving wife Doris; son Guy (Wendy); daughter Marlyn (David) Townsend; grandsons Jason (Kerri) and Douglas (Yolanda); and great-grandchildren Tia, Lucas, Alex, Isaac, and Reid. John was pre-deceased by his parents, sisters Martha (Rob) Jackson and Mary (Ed) Barlow, and brother in law Bob (Phyllis) Drake. In lieu of flowers, do-nations in John’s memory may be made directly to the Cheadle Lions Club Hospice Fund (Box 22 Site 3 RR1, Strathmore, AB. T1P 1J6). Wheatland Braves head coach Carl Knudsen felt good about his team re-warding their goaltender Daniel Haus-er with a 2-0 shutout win over the Le-thbridge Hurricanes White on Jan. 8 in a game where the confidence was high.

“It was great to see,” said Knudsen. “He was pretty happy. I think that was his first shutout ever. We played pret-ty darn good in Hussar, had a full a 60-minute effort. We were moving the puck real well, playing with some con-fidence, taking care of the defensive end and it resulted in a 2-0 win.”

Tristan Zandee and Matthew Quebec scored in the win.

The next night in Olds, the Braves found themselves down 3-1 going into the third, but Knudsen credits his club for battling back, scoring four unan-swered goals to take a 5-3 lead and hang on for a 6-4 win.

“After the second period I had to get down to a brass tacks and get every-one motivated there to give me some hard work basically,” said Knudsen. “We weren’t skating hard enough and a little bit of a let down from the night before … just kind of typical to have a let down the next day.”

Adam Kirkpatrick led the charge with two goals, while Zandee, Zach Nich-olls, Kobe Gosling and Ray Warrack rounded out the offense in the win.

The local double-A peewee team plays in Medicine Hat on Jan. 15 (7:45 p.m.) before hosting Lethbridge Hurri-canes Red in Hussar on Jan. 16 (5 p.m.).

Meanwhile, the Wheatland Warriors split their weekend games, starting off with a 5-2 home win over Red Deer before losing a tightly contested match to the Bow Valley Timberwolves 4-3 in

Cochrane.Head Coach Cody Brown thought the

team had a great start against a physical Red Deer team and were able to shut them down in the third period when they tried to gain any momentum.

“When we got everybody on our squad firing, we’re a team to be reck-oned with,” said Brown. “We had a good start, lots of jump, hitting them with everything we had right off the bat and they just couldn’t contain us. Everybody was working well together playing a good team game for a better part of 40 minutes.”

Kevin Schrock, Brandon Kasdorf, Stran Backfat Redcrow, Kyle Bray and Ben Kruse scored in the win.

The game in Bow Valley was a tight one all the way through. Unfortunately the team ran into some penalty trouble and they had their work cut out for them at that point in time in the game, while dealing with injuries.

“We finished with a skeleton crew,” said Brown. “I don’t know, just didn’t have the gas to quite finish it, had lots of chances but couldn’t find that goal towards the end of the game.”

Ben Slemp notched two goals, while Kevin Schrock added one in the loss.

The Warriors will take on the Red Deer Ramada on Jan. 16 at 3 p.m. be-fore hosting the Central AB Selects on Jan. 17 (1:30 p.m.), at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Meanwhile, Olds defeated the Wheat-land Chiefs 5-1 in Olds on Sunday af-ternoon.

After more than a three-year absence from playing in the junior varsity level, the Strathmore Spartans boys basket-ball team are back on the court and despite a recent loss are showing vast improvements. Already three games into the season, a 69-40 loss against Holy Trinity on Jan. 7 didn’t affect the team’s dedication, and they continue to steadily improve, officials say.

“We played really strong defense,” said Coach Travis Gorski, who filled in for the head coach. “The kids are re-ally taking their coaching well and we actually scored double as many points as two nights ago. There’s definitely a hard work ethic with these guys every week. Some of the comments from the kids, even though we lost, they felt that they played a terrific game.”

Gorski said the boys were able to hang around with Holy Trinity most of the game but weren’t able to press, and that’s where the opposition was able to open up a 16-point lead.

“They were pressing us and we tried to beat it with our dribble,” said Gorski.

“But then they would double team us. We were having troubles breaking press and get our passes going.”

Despite losing the game, there were positive outcomes to take from it. Gor-ski was pleased with the effort of the

boys getting the ball down into the paint where they saw most of their suc-cess in the game.

Isaac Wegner, who is in first year of basketball but is an avid football play-er, is still learning the rules of the game and finds himself fouling out of a lot of games. He thought this was the best overall performance the team put on.

“We really let go in the third quar-ter but we really brought it back up in the fourth quarter which is good,” he said. “We played really well in the first two quarters and kept up with them. We played them before in tournament quite badly. At half time we made quite a few adjustments and came out with a strong press in the third quarter.”

The Town of Strathmore is a vibrant and progressive community of 13,000 people, located on the Trans Canada Highway 40 km. East of Calgary. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the full time role of Project Coordinator will coordinate Municipal utility infrastructure projects, both acting as the Town’s representative on major projects, as well as leading smaller projects identified for implemen-tation. This position works closely with the Operations team and Consulting Engineers, as well as Construction Contractors.

The ideal candidate is an individual who has the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, effectively communicate with employees, administration, and members of the construc-tion industry, professionals and the public. A professional attitude and appearance are required to represent the interests of the Municipality. The successful candidate will also have superior planning, scheduling and coordination skills and the ability to effectively solve issues quickly and effectively. Experience working in a Political environment will be considered an asset.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:• Prepare RFP’s and RFQ’s for procurement of services and goods for multiple departments• Collect quotes for various goods and services required by multiple departments• Assist in the review of bid proposals and make recommendation on the award of bids• Participate in design, pre-bid, site review and preconstruction meetings• Review construction inspector notes, make field visits during construction phase, interface with contractor around project schedule and interpret project documents, codes and construction standards• Coordinate construction/project activities with Town Departments and other contractors• Monitor project schedule and prepare periodic reports for Director of Engineering. • Prepare correspondence and reports detailing status of design or construction projects planned or underway• Work closely with Consulting Engineers and Contractors on Operating and Capital projects• Perform Construction Completion and Final Acceptance inspections for new Underground infrastructure• Assist with project planning and budgeting activities• Review, circulate and respond to request for shallow utility installations within a Town utility r ight of way or road right of way (Atco Gas, Fortis, Encana, etc.)• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS The preferred candidate will have a C.E.T. Designation, minimum 4 years of experience in Municipal Civil works. Civil Project Coordination and/or Project Management experience would be considered an asset.
