We hope you had a restful and happy holiday season with your families. New year - new resolutions! This month as a staff, we have resolved to focus on activities with the students that involve understanding the benefits of caring for those around you, and to be appreciative of the things we have. Think of it as a month (or more) of Valentines activities without the big pink hearts. Watch for more on this as the month continues. January also marks the halfway point of the school year. A time to reflect and plan for addressing whole school goals and academic goals for all MCS students. A large part of our long range planning involves the Accountability Surveys mailed home to our families and taken by all students in grades 4-8 later this month. Please read the article later in the newsletter regarding this important process. On behalf of everyone here at MCS school, I would like to express our collective sympathy to the Stabler family for the loss of Clarence. I have frequently heard that Clarence was considered the “unofficial mayor” of Millarville. He was known for his friendly, inclusive demeanour, caring attitude and as the local welcome wagon, as he was usually the first to greet new residents. You will be missed Clarence. As always if you have any concerns, questions or comments, please feel free to contact me. Alberta Education Accountability Pillar Information for parents:

As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success.

The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators consisting of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various aspects of quality; student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates; and provincial assessments of student learning.

From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey. In January, parents of students in grades 4, 7, and 10 will receive a survey from Alberta Education. In February, students in grades 4-8 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school.

All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with the school. In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Urdu.

Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.

Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2015, and will be reported publicly as part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.

Kinders are inquirying into what we learn from our families by investigating

family trees. They will also find out who does all the work around the

house! Mom? Dad?

The Grade 1s are researching arctic animals and one student wants to

find out how reindeer fly. Hopefully they will find some answers!

The Grade 2s are comparing different kinds of Tall Tales and will be busy

writing personal stories as their unit unfolds.

The Grade 3s made some beautiful prints and looked at symmetry, area,

and pattern. The Tunisian tiles are usually blue, yellow, orange, or green.

They are influenced by Islam.

The Grade 4s spent the day at the Glenbow Museum learning about

those special risk-takers who settled in our province. Did you know that

cowboy Maverick, John Ware lived close to the Fisher’s property here in

Millarville?

The Grade 5s are wrapping up their unit of inquiry by filming “Canadian

Minute” videos. These will be shared with the class next week. The next

unit in Grade 5 is the PYP Exhibition!

The Grade 6s enjoying their work with fractions and are finishing their novel

study, I Was a Rat, by Philip Pullman. They are enjoying their basketball

league with other grade 6 classes in our area.

The Grade 7s are loving their phys-ed unit on Ringette! Someone

commented that “this may be my favourite sport!”.

The Grade 8s hosted the assembly on Caring this week, acting out with

Western flair how kindness can infuse anyone. Their short video showed

what caring means to us at MCS.

And we all think it’s pretty awesome that Mr. Hanson got engaged over

the Christmas break! Congratulations!

MILLARVILLE AND DISTRICT

RECREATION BOARD

The Millarville and District Recreation Board is accepting applications for funding for non-profit organizations for the coming year. Each year the board receives a grant from the Municipal District of Foothills No. 31 and disperses the funds to deserving groups. If you would like to apply for a grant, please send a letter stating your request along with a budget for 2015 and a financial statement for 2014, to Box 59, Millarville, Alberta T0L 1K0. In previous years funding has been provided to the Millarville Sports Association, Millarville Community Library, Millarville Community School, Oilfields High School, West End Band Program, various 4-H groups and individuals in sports and dance who have competed at a national or international level. The deadline for applications is March 15

th. For

further information please contact Norma Dawson at 403-931-3580. We are always looking for new community members to sit on our board, so if you are interested please give Norma a call.

MILLARVILLE COMMUNITY LIBRARY The Annual General Meeting of the library will take place on Tuesday, March 3

rd at 3:00 pm.

Everyone is welcome to attend and we are looking for new people to sit on our board. The average age of our board members is getting up there and we need some new younger blood to revitalize our library and make us more in tune with new technology. Many of our daily volunteers go south in the winter and we may have to cut back our hours if everyone goes away at the same time. Right now we have sixteen regular volunteers and four spares which usually means we can stay open over thirty hours each week. If your children are in the school, maybe you could find a half day each week or every other week where you could volunteer. It is a fun place to work and you do not need any previous library experience – we will train you! If you are interested, please call the library at 403-931-3919

FOOTHILLS CONTINUING EDUCATION

The new course guide is out and you can pick up your copy at the School, the Community Library or the General Store. There are classes offered all over the Foothills so have a look and learn something new! In our area there are courses in working with willow, yoga, badminton, pickleball, various cake classes, ebooks and library apps and an introduction to Scottish dancing just in time for Robbie Burns day.
