Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Revealing the Beloved Son

In Matthew’s account of Jesus’ baptism (Matthew 3:13-17), Jesus simply appears as one of the crowd who was given “a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” Only after the baptism, while Jesus is in prayer, does the Spirit appear as a dove and the voice of God sound out from the sky.

Many people ask why Jesus came for baptism since he was without sin. Ritual cleansing was a regular part of Jewish practice before the Sabbath, after periods of uncleanness, and in preparation for great battles. John’s baptism was a specific call to turn away from wrongdoing and turn toward God. So persuasive was his preaching that many of his followers wondered if he was the Messiah. He quickly corrects that idea. As we hear today, his is a baptism of water only. The Anointed One will baptize with the Spirit and fire — a sign of God’s judgment for all. When He is baptized by John, Jesus acknowledges John’s authority as a man of God, and also Jesus partici-pates in a public sign of His absolute obedience and reliance on God. The words that are heard from the heavens are similar to Isaiah 42:1 (“my ser-vant . . . my chosen . . . soul delights”), and they express Matthew’s under-standing that this is the beginning of the messianic era.

Christmas Wreaths & Trees We would like to thank the individuals and

families that participated in our second Christ-

mas wreath and tree program. The wreaths in the church

and the lit trees on the plaza and the parking lot certainly

enhanced our lovely Christmas decorations. Again, Our

gratitude to all and everyone for the overwhelming support.

We will publish a list of donors in the near future.

mas offering of our parishioners is an important source of

AUGUSTINIAN VOLUNTEER

PROGRAM For those of you not familiar with the program, we are

the lay volunteer program sponsored by the St. Thomas

of Villanova Province and supported by Augustinian

communities across the country. Augustinian Volun-

teers are Catholic men and women between the ages of

21-29 who wish to serve God’s people in partnership

with the Augustinian Order and others. The service of

the volunteers is with established educational, social,

and health programs and varies according to the needs

of the sponsoring site and the individual volunteer. Ap-

plications are currently being accepted for the 2015-

2016 volunteer year for our sites in Chicago, IL, Law-

rence, MA, Philadelphia, PA, San Diego, CA, Ventura,
