Thinking of moving into smaller digs orresponsible for an elderly parent’s move?Too much stuff, too little space seems to beincreasingly prevalent more than ever.Today baby boomers are experiencing the‘downsizing phenomenon’, whether it’s fortheir own benefit, or due to moving a parentinto assisted living. Transitioning intosmaller living spaces no matter what thereason brings challenges – one of which is –what do you do with all the extra items thatwon’t fit? The first option that crossespeople’s minds is renting a storage unit. Ifthe downsizing is due to saving money, thisis not a wise move. On average, the cost torent a small storage unit can run about$1,000+ per year. Paying this amount eachyear repeatedly on items that may not beworth the expenditure, is not workingtowards the intended goal of saving money.Additionally, it also becomes one moreresponsibility to deal with. In essence, youare now adding a monthly expense similarto that of an apartment lease, and carvingtime out to check on your things. The key issaving/making money and time, notspending it.
Understandably, the thought of all thesteps involved of parting with large amountof items or furniture, leaves many feelingoverwhelmed. However, there is anotheroption that can put money in your pocketand give you the coveted space you need.Consigning can be a terrific idea, and someof the following tips can make the decisioneasier:• Check the lay of the land. Use the latest
edition of Resale Houston Magazine tosee what types of items each resale orconsignment shop accepts and wherethey are located. Some are geared tospecific types of items, so knowing whichones that may be interested in acceptingyour items is the first step.
• Knowledge is power. Doing someresearch of an item’s worth isadvantageous. Do take into account thatitems can depreciate, so don’t think whatyou paid for it, equates to what you willget for it. You must be prepared to acceptthis. If you have time or the extra funds,an appraiser can be beneficial in this step, but again, is not a guarantee this is whatyou will fetch for the item.
• Take photos of what itis you are consideringconsigning. This can bedone simply with a digital camera orcamera-phone and is much easier to carrythan lugging all the items around withyou when visiting shops. Be sure to showor note any irregularities that couldpossibly affect the value. The moreinformation you record or divulge, themore accurate a shop can quote you whatthey will list it for.
• Leave no stone unturned. Make a list ofquestions to ask shops so you have a fullunderstanding of the policies, commission ratio, insurance, paymentschedule, time limits, etc.
• Pick up the pieces. Some shops offer pick-up services for no-cost or a nominal fee. This can be a terrific option especially ifyou don’t have the means to physicallymove heavier items.
