Janelle Agius – Principal All Saints and All Souls The Feast of all Saints (or All Hallows) will be celebrated in the Catholic Church on Sunday. It is the day after Halloween and the day before All Souls. All Saints Day is a day in which we remember and celebrate all those who have attained heaven. Halloween originates from ‘All Hallows Eve’, that is the day before All Hallows (or All Saints). All Souls Day, celebrated on Monday, remembers all our departed and in particular those who may still need our prayers to attain perfection with God. It is good for all of us to remember family members and friends who have passed away and to pray for them on these days. Cultural Showcase and Awards Evening On Thursday 15 October, both Mercy College and St Patrick’s College’s Cultural Departments combined to celebrate the cultural achievements of both schools at a Combined Presentation Evening. It was a great celebration of the cultural life of both Colleges. Congratulations to all award winners, students and parents for the efforts throughout the year in our Cultural department. A special mention and congratulations to Mr Marcus McConnell and all staff, volunteers and students for a great evening. Semi-formal The Year 11 Semi-formal is coming up on the last day of term, Friday 27 November. Please see Ms Samantha Nutt’s section later in this newsletter for more details. Valedictory Congratulations to all involved with our Valedictory for Year 12 students held on Tuesday 20 October. It was great to see parents able to attend, sitting in the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre Halls, as well as those who watch from the comfort of their homes. Mr Mark Casey is to be congratulated and thanked for his wonderful organisation of this event, especially having to factor in COVID regulations and requirements. Thank you also to all the office staff, staff who worked behind the scenes, prepared performers and helped prepare students for this event. It was a great celebration of the graduating class. Fr Don White, Fr Alex Varghese, Fr Stephen Hanly, Mrs Julieanne Gilbert, Mayor Greg Williamson, Mr Michael McCusker (Assistant to the Director: Northern Region), Mr Jim Ford (Mercy College Principal), Sisters of Mercy and local principals were amongst our special guests on the night. A special thanks to Mrs Tracey Doevendans for her vote of thanks to the College on behalf of parents at the end of the night. Congratulations to all students on their graduation. Year 12 Graduation To celebrate the completion of 13 years of school for the students of St Patrick’s College, we come together for the Graduation Mass and ceremony on 20 November in the St Patrick’s College Hall. All students need to be in full academic uniform for the occasion, with the ceremony beginning at 8:30 am. Because of COVID restrictions, we have had to make a number of changes this year to be able to run this event. The Mass will occur in the Hall, not the Church. We can only make 150 seats available to parents in the hall. As well, we will be opening up classrooms to assist with the accommodation of families who wish to be onsite for the event. The entire ceremony will be streamed live via a closed YouTube link. Booking tickets will be made available in the next two weeks. Please look out for an SMS and/or email notification, of the availability and process for booking tickets. We all look forward to these celebrations and the opportunity to bid these fine young people farewell. I speak for all staff at St Patrick’s College, when I say that we have faith in our Year 12 students that after many years of Catholic Education, they too, have a belief in God, the goodness of humanity and hope for the future. "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy" (Mt 5:7). A reminder to students: ♣ To be in full academic uniform for Graduation Mass – this includes long grey pants for boys and stockings for girls. Danika Hurley – College Counsellor This time of the year can create a great deal of stress and worry for our Year 12 students and teachers, but also the families of our students. With the end of year external exams currently taking place, many students are concerned about what their future holds and the transition that is about to take place, whether leaving Mackay and/or commencing employment or further study. At the end of this newsletter, please find information on ‘How Worry Works’ and ‘Accepting Uncertainty’ which may be helpful. If you, or someone in your family requires support for their mental health and wellbeing, please reach out and make an appointment to speak with me at school (4994 8750) or alternatively Lifeline (131 114), Kids Helpline (1800 551 800), or via a chat service at eheadspace through eheadspace.org.au or calling 1800 650 890.

Mark Casey – Pastoral Care Coordinator Valedictory 2020 The recent Valedictory Evening celebrated the successes of the year and was a great opportunity for Year 12 students to be congratulated for their efforts. Many students attained awards for effort in the classroom, as well as their academic performance. The behaviour of all was exemplary and all students should be proud of the way they conducted themselves throughout rehearsal and on the night. Whilst it was disappointing that parents were not able to be in the Auditorium with students, the live stream allowed hundreds of family members to see the successes of our students from any location. It could not have been such a success without the tireless efforts of the St Patrick’s College office staff, as well as the generous time given by many St Patrick’s College staff.

Samantha Nutt – Pastoral Care Coordinator Year 11 Semi Formal The Year 11 Semi-Formal is to be held on 27 November at the Mackay Turf Club. Tickets are now on sale until 11 November. No tickets will be sold after this date. Due to COVID, meals will be an alternate drop, so students will be required to see Ms Nutt prior to the 11 November to arrange their seating arrangements. Dietary requirements will also be due by this date.

The event: ’UQ Young Leaders Conference’ will present Year 11 students with a unique and exciting opportunity for academic extension and enrichment. It will allow me to discover a variety of different career options and show me how to enhance my employability. I am really looking forward to this conference. Written by Immogen Martin

National Youth Science Forum Amy and I were recently accepted into the National Youth Science Forum. This program involves over 500 Year 12 students from across Australia to engage in many STEM experiences over a period of 14 days. Activities range from conversations with Nobel Prize Winners to a virtual tour of the Liquid Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. Written by Kelly Li

While COVID-19 has altered some of the original activities, both Kelly and I are so excited to be able to participate in this program which will allow us to interact with many different STEM related activities outside of school. We look forward to connecting with students and educators around Australia.

Chad Buckby – Sports Coordinator Sports Awards Due to limited sporting activities during 2020 because of the COVID-19 restrictions, it was decided that the College would not hold a Sports Awards Evening and no crowning of the Sports Man and Sport Woman awards. However, at our last whole school assembly, we did recognise the winners of the team awards that played this year. Congratulation to the following people for the wonderful achievements in 2020.

Warren Bolton – Teacher Year 11 Furnishing At the end of last term, Wakehouse Australia located at 504 Michigan Way Andergrove, generously invited our St Patrick’s College students to test their individually designed and manufactured wakeskates from the Year 11 Furnishing Class assessment. Each student had to design and develop a shape for his or her board and then using a pyrography pen, burn their own patterns into the timber, customising their individual boards. On the day, Regan Edwards was a natural, showing remarkable talent with his wake skating skills. Wakehouse Australia owners Amanda and Dan Probert, pictured below, presented a free pass to Regan to encourage his abilities.

Regan also came to the attention of Dan Milstein, a Pro Wakeskater from the Israeli National Athletics Team. Mr Milstein is currently working for Wakehouse Australia whilst travelling and competing around the world. Mr Milstein gave Regan valuable advice and tips on how to further develop his wakskating skills, whilst riding doubles with Regan. Mr Milstein also encouraged him to practice on his very own professional wakeskate board. Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff from Wakehouse Australia for their professionalism, generosity and friendly atmosphere and creating an environment filled with fun, fitness and fantastic new skills for beginner students.

James Neivandt – Student In mid-October, Brisbane Theatre Company, Shake and Stir, again hosted the Queensland Youth Shakespeare Festival which provides a unique opportunity for students across Queensland to focus their artistic talents in a creative celebration of the works of William Shakespeare. Students across the state were invited to use any Shakespearean text as inspiration for their work in the fields of drama, dance, music, photography, art, film and television and costume design. From more than 1000 entries submitted, three of St Patrick’s College students were selected among the 100 students invited to present their art form at Brisbane’s La Boite Theatre. Max Kingsbury, Kennedy Foley and myself, James Neivandt, performed in the drama section. Max and Kennedy presented a duologue from the comedy, As You Like It and I presented a monologue in the role of Mercutio from Romeo and Juliet. For the three of us, this festival provided a fantastic opportunity to perform in a very different type of theatre along with the cream of acting talent from schools across the state. We were also given the unique opportunity to attend workshops run by professionals in the performance industry. The atmosphere at the festival was exhilarating and we felt so privileged to be able to attend the only performance festival allowed in Australia during COVID. I would encourage all students who have a passion in the Arts, to consider auditioning or applying next year. A big thank you to Mr Dean Andric and Ms Sarah Neivandt, our directors, who accompanied us to Brisbane.
