Biography research booklets

Each Biography Research Bookletis designed to guide studentsthrough the research process.
Ideally, the teacher would modelthe process one step at a timebefore students do the workindependently.
Students will need access toinformation sources such asbooks, articles, or websites.
This is a great time to discuss howto find trustworthy sources ofinformation.
The project beginswith a brainstormabout the selectedfigure.
Next, I like to color-code the Table ofContents to matchthe Tabs.
Students can alsorecord thei rresearch sources.
Inside the bookletsEach section provides a space for (on the left) and a space for using the notes to writea (on the right). It’s helpful to model both note-taking and how to use notes to writea paragraph, before students try this on their own.
We also discuss important Students may use the space provided to include a map, anillustration, a diagram, or even a photograph.

Section 1: Early Life and Education
Students take notes on the person’s childhood, education, and early lifeexperiences. Once they have gathered the information, they mustselect what is most important and use that to write a short paragraph.
Section 2: Challenges and Accomplishments
Students take notes on the obstacles the person faced and listaccomplishments from his/her life. Again, students must select themost important information to include in the paragraph. This section isabout uncovering the events that led up to the person making animpact.
Section 3: Traits and Legacy
Students think about the character traits shown and about how thisperson impacted the lives of others. This section is about looking at theperson from a broader perspective and thinking about how (and why)they are remembered by others. You might ask, “How did this personchange the world?” Or “Why does this person matter?”
Section 4: Fun Facts and Timeline
In the last section, students can write and/or illustrate some interestingor surprising facts about their person and create a timeline ofimportant events. Again, model first!
*The last page allows students to reflect on their work and rate itusing a simple scale.
Preparing BookletsIf your printer allows it, simply select the booklet pages and select “Print 2-sided,Fli p on Short Edge.”
Run copies by placing the stack on the feeder tray in “Landscape” (see below).
Print out the pages of the booklet one-sided. Take the stack (do not fli p or turnpages !) and place it on the copy machine feeder tray in “Landscape.” Run sets as2-sided.
For Example:
Fold each set in hal f and usea long-arm staple to put onestaple along the “spine.”Ta-da! So easy!
