Each day, fourth and fifth grade students from all six elementary schools in Au- burn were treated to a day of arts educa- tion. Students learned about traditional crafts, music, dance and storytelling in Alabama. The program began with a performance by the Ala- bama Gravy Soppers, a band who specializes in early 20 th Century string band music. Students attended workshops that uniquely reflected the personality of Alabama and learned about craft- persons such as Mozell Benson, Bettye Kimbrell, Jerry Brown and Gene Ivey. Students also ex- perienced paintings by Ellen Wayles Carpenter and stories by Alabama storyteller Wanda John- son, which were filled with the colorful history and preservation of our state. Adventures in Art is sponsored by the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department and held at JDCAC. Funding is made possible, in part, through grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and Junior League of Lee County. Pictured above are representatives from the Junior League of Lee County, Mayor Bill Ham and fourth and fifth grade students from Wrights Mill Road Elementary School. Cindy Mask was taught to draw by her mother before she began attending school. Growing up in New York allowed her to realize the importance of an art education at an early age. Cindy majored in Biology and minored in Art at the College of Wooster in Ohio. After community classes in silver jewelry making and pottery, she started taking water-color classes. She has been teaching watercolor in Auburn since 1982, when she started teaching for Continuing Edu-cation through Auburn University. Her classes have been meeting at JDCAC since it opened 10 years ago. In 2001, Cindy began teaching a watercolor class for the members of Auburn’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Cindy has taken 15 watercolor workshops in various parts of the country and served as President of the Water-color Society of Alabama (WSA) in 2005. Cindy remains a signature member of the WSA and has participated in juried art shows at JDCAC and Auburn University. Cindy particularly enjoys the process of art materials and has experience in encaustic (wax) painting. In May 2008, Cindy graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Auburn University. She is currently participating in three workshops offered by the Alabama Institute for Education in the Arts: Bringing the Arts to Schools. Check out the Parks and Recreation Winter Brochure for Cindy’s exciting, inno-vative art classes and workshops to be offered at JDCAC. JDCAC is very fortunate to have Cindy as an arts instructor!

The Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center would like to thank everyone who joined us for the 4th annual Polar Express Holiday Celebration hosted by the Auburn Arts Association (AAA) and Auburn Parks and Recreation Department. Children experienced an imaginative journey to the North Pole which included singing holiday carols, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, festive arts and crafts projects, Nutcracker ballet performances and delicious treats. This adventure was our rendition of the children’s book, The Polar Express, written by Chris Van

Allsburg. The event was greatly enhanced and brought to life with the efforts of many volunteers, an animated conductor, elves dressed in jolly attire, the Lynn Terra Ballet and Auburn Fire Department, along with an extremely dedicated staff. Together, they all helped our guests truly believe.

The Auburn Arts Association is

Recruiting Volunteers

The Auburn Arts Association (AAA) is currently recruiting volunteers. The organization was founded as a non-profit, community-based arts organization in 1982. Its primary objectives are to promote arts education, encourage and support local artists and arts initiatives, and foster community interest and participation in the arts. The AAA is governed by a board of directors. Membership is open to anyone—individual, senior citizen, family and corporate. AU Tiger Strings

Concert

AU Tiger Strings held their first concert Saturday, Dec. 5 at Goodwin Hall. They played a variety of pieces such as Bohemian Folk Song, Baroque Fugue, A Celtic Suite, Wood Shoe Dance and Themes from The Nutcracker. A surprise appearance by Aubie enthused guests as he accompanied the orchestra during their last performance piece, Jingle Bells. AU Tiger Strings will have concerts this spring and summer and are always looking for new members. For more information, please contact the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center at 501.2963.

Kathy King began her music studies at an early age learning to play the piano. She continued her passion through high school and attended Auburn University to pursue a degree in music education, choosing the organ as her concentration. In 2003, she received a master’s degree in music education and is currently working on her doctorate. Kathy teaches private piano lessons and is the organist at Lakeview Baptist Church, where she has played for 25 years. Her students often said they wished they had somewhere to perform, which gave Kathy the idea to start a children’s community string orchestra. When she told her idea to Dr. Kimberly Walls, professor of music education in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Auburn University, the department offered to sponsor the orchestra. The new program, AU Tiger Strings, started in the summer of 2009. The goal of the program is to foster an interest in string instruments and promote music education in the community. The program is held at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center and Goodwin Music Hall and is open to musicians in grades 2 - 12 with a minimum of one year of experience. The program is supported by Dr. Sara Lynn Baird, Chair of the Department of Music in the College of Liberal Arts and Dr. Howard Goldstein, Professor of Music at Auburn University and Auburn Community Orchestra Conductor. Currently, the program has 29 students and is accepting new applicants. The Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center is pleased to be a part of a such a wonderful program. To join, please contact us at 501.2963.

Seussical, Jr!!! Children’s Musical Theatre The Auburn Area Community Children’s Theatre will perform Seussical, Jr!!! March 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 at

the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. This will be a musical extravaganza you don’t want to miss. Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie and all of the Whos of Whoville. The score emerges as a Seussian Gumbo of musical styles, ranging from Latin to pop, swing to gospel and R&B to funk. So let your toes tap, your fingers snap and your imagination run wild for “Oh, the thinks you can think, when you think about Seuss!” To reserve tickets, please call 741.5333 or email Stas Czerkawski at [email protected]. The Auburn Studio Project: Traditional yet Innovative The Auburn Studio Project (ASP), an art education program for eighth grade Auburn Junior High School students, was held Feb. 22 - 24 at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center (JDCAC) and Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art (JCSM). This community-based, art education program is sponsored by the City of Auburn Parks & Recreation Department, JDCAC and the JCSM. “This year’s Auburn Studio Project was a huge success. I could not have been more pleased with the participation of students and the quality of the visual art

projects produced,” said Cari Philen, Art Education Specialist and ASP Coordinator. This year’s theme was Tradition and Innovation. The program began at the JDCAC with a performance by the Juggernaut Jug Band, a Kentucky-based band. Students learned about traditional folk jug music and the instruments played by the Juggernaut Jug Band. Students then participated in a three-part program that included a basket weaving art project, a gallery discussion with three local artists who utilized the Found Objects exhibition and a performance workshop with the Juggernauts. The program concluded with a trip to the JCSM, where students experienced the Tradition Innovation exhibition through a docent-led tour and attended two additional workshops that consisted of a film preview of two documentaries. Students also had an opportunity to create sound sculptures with Seattle-based artist, Trimpin. The JDCAC would like to thank everyone involved with the Auburn Studio Project as this year proved to be a traditional yet innovative success.

wedding, it will be from laughing so hard! Performance dates: May 14, 15, 20, 21, & 22 at 7:30 p.m. and May

Dearly Beloved

Chichi Lovett is a dedicated Professor of Art

at Auburn University and director of Summer

Visual Art Workshops for Children, otherwise

know as Art Camps. In the summer of 1994,

Lovett began a program that continues to

impact children in the Auburn community. Inspired by the

lack of opportunities for children in the community to have

access to affordable art experiences and the need for a

teaching lab for her Auburn University students during the

summer, she created the AU Children’s Visual Art

Workshops with the support of Dr. J. Gluhman, the Art

Department Head in 1994. These art camps allow children to

experience working with a variety of mediums, styles and

techniques. This valuable exposure to the arts includes

painting, printmaking, mixed media, drawing, weaving and

three-dimensional works. Gifted and generous educators are

invited to the workshops to teach their favorite lessons

inspired by art movements, styles, specific artists and diverse

cultures. A bi-lingual art camp is also offered where artists,

modern and traditional artwork from Spanish speaking

countries and culture are explored and taught. Lovett, along

with the Auburn Arts Association, Jan Dempsey Community

Arts Center, the Jule Collins Smith Museum and Auburn

University Art Department, make it possible for the camps to

continue year after year. Local artists, art educators, parents,

AU faculty and students all work together to provide this

extraordinary opportunity for children to participate in

meaningful art experiences. For more information about art

camps or to register please call the Arts Center at 501-2963.
