Happy New Year! Christmas is over and the New Year, 2014, is right around the corner. We like something new, whether it is a new thing or a new friend. We like a new vehicle, even if it is a used vehicle, it is new to us. We like a new cell phone, clothes, house, computer, or a new friendship. When we know we are going to experience something new, we greatly enjoy the anticipation of the experience. Zella and I learned earlier this year that we were going to greet our first grandchild. So, for nine months, we were eagerly looking forward to the arrival of Lincoln Troy Adams. Experiencing a grandchild is great! Now, I am looking forward to when he will talk, walk , and play!!! John writes in Revelation 21:1, “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth.” We are not exactly sure what all that means. We certainly know that we are looking forward to the new experience of a place where there is no more suffering, sickness, sorrow, trials, troubles, heartaches, or hardships. We are really looking forward to the newness that God has for us. We also have confidence that with God, His newness will be more wonderful that we could possibly imagine. However, we certainly do not have to wait until heaven to experience God’s newness. When we became Christians, we experienced God’s newness of life. Every day is a gift of God’s newness. Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “The Lord’s loving-kindnesses indeed never cease. For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning. Great is Thy faithfulness” (NASB). Since every day is an experience of God’s newness, let’s take advantage of the New Year to start some new habits. For example, since we will be experiencing a sermon series through the story of the Bible, let’s reach for the goal of reading through the entire Bible for 2014. That goal will help us to establish Bible reading as a daily habit. One of the best things about habits is that it is in the habit and routine where much is accomplished. The daily habit of reading the Bible puts us in the place where God develops us into a new person. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Speaking of renewal, I always look forward to Spring because it is in the season of Spring, where God renews the earth. “How to Lead a Great Bible Study” This month begins a series of articles from Discipleship Journal focused on helping you lead an effective Bible study. This information is useful for beginners as well as seasoned teachers and group leaders. Enjoy!

“Before You Lead” by Becky Brodin

Preparing for the Study When we consider Jesus’ example, His lifelong reverence for God’s Word is evident. Matthew 5:19 demonstrates this and suggests the attitude I need to have toward the Word of God: “Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.” Respect for God’s Word governs a careful preparation for the groups I lead. I do a thorough study of each lesson or topic. Then I pray through the Scriptures covered in that particular study. Finally, I pray through the Scriptures for the members of the group. This preparation gives me confidence to communicate the content. I find that the more prepared I am, the less I talk. Ideally, I am there to guide the discussion, not to dominate it. In preparing each lesson, I develop a simple objective that states what truth(s) I’d like the group to discover. I write the discussion questions with the answers in different colors, and I record any illustrations that help teach or communicate the idea. These are my permanent study guides. I keep them together in a notebook. When I want to lead a study I’ve led before, I pull out the study guide, revise it where necessary, pray through it, and it’s ready to be used as effectively as the first time.

Debbie and I would like to express our deep appreciation for all the kindness and hospitality that has been extended to us during this Christmas season. All of your gifts and thoughtful expressions have helped make this season bright for both of us. Additionally, with this issue of the newsletter, we find ourselves completing our first year here at Tates Creek and all we can say is "Thank You." Thank you for embracing us so warmly and allowing us to minister here among you. We look forward to the coming year and all God has in store for us as we serve Him together. January's Better With Age Club meets on Thursday the 16th and the Syversons will be our program. Greg and Vicki Syverson, along with their children, are missionaries our church supports in Pachuca, Mexico. They are going to be living in the mission house for several weeks as they are on furlough here in the states. This promises to be a great program as we get to meet or get reacquainted with this family, and hear first hand about the work there in Mexico. Plan on being in attendance for this first BWAC meeting of the new year.

January also sees the beginning of the winter session of OASIS. This session promises several good class options one of which is the "Truth Project." I have personally gone thru this program and it has been one of the most profitable studies I have undertaken. We all know there is a lot of "unsound" spiritual thought out there because the

basis of truth has been moved. The Old Testament scripture taught that no one should move a boundary stone. The reason the law of God taught that is obvious. It brought true ownership into confusion and dispute for everyone. So too, when truth became "relative" in our culture confusion and dispute resulted. No longer can we say this is right and this is wrong without being referred to as being narrow minded and judgmental. The Truth Project examines how we got to where we are today and the way back to where we need to be. Join us for this or one of the other fine classes as Oasis brings this new year. ~Bro. Don’s Dynamics Recently, I decided to have ALL new flooring installed in my house. When I purchased my home over 9 years ago, the sellers had installed “cheap” carpeting to get it sold and it was getting very worn. The kitchen tile looked good, but was getting several hairline cracks and pits in it and since

it was over 21 years old, could not be matched. So, I “bit the bullet” and decided to lay good quality carpet & padding, put new vinyl in 2 of the 3 bathrooms, and had wood laminate installed over the kitchen tile, entryways and downstairs hallway. Now, why am I telling you all about this? Little did I realize when I committed to this project that it would be like MOVING and yet staying in the same house! If you have been through this major nightmare, you know that it means taking everything off closet floors, removing all lamps, table-top items, etc. and finding a place to store them during the project. AND...I have a grand piano and church organ in my living room that I had to have professionally moved. I just completed getting the house together in time to tear it up again to decorate for Christmas. SO...since I had to remove all the JUNK in my closets, I decided it was time to go through all of that stuff and decide what to keep and what to throw out after not using it for over 9 years (and probably several more years before that in Florida). I started thinking about cleaning out closets and how good it makes me feel to see how nice and open they look now. Yes, there is a spiritual application here. Many times, we allow our lives to get “cluttered up” with so many things...needless things...time consuming...harmful things...insignificant and unimportant things, and they get in the way of what we really need to be storing inside. As we begin 2014, let’s take a look at what we are holding on to and make some decisions to get rid of the “things” that keep us from living productive lives for Christ.

We’ve been in Ethiopia for just over 6 weeks and Travis and I can’t get over how much we feel like babies in our new culture. We left our home where we knew exactly how to get around town, pay our bills, buy groceries, cook dinner…you know, the simple, everyday tasks that we all do. On October 29th, we entered our new home but we entered it as infants. We were completely dependent on the generosity of our Ethiopian hosts and teammates to get to the grocery store, speak to the veggie man, connect to the internet and use phones, get our Ethiopian driver’s licenses, etc. Even now after 6 weeks, Travis and I still feel like babies who are constantly taking in new information and communicating via hand gestures and short, simple phrases. It is simultaneously frustrating and hilarious.

After 3 weeks of language school, I’m sure you all expect that we are practically fluent in Amharic, but I have a confession to make, we are still in the “baby-talk” phase. Some of our favorite things to say right now are: “The pig is standing on the cow” and “The chicken is inside

the book.” Like I said, you have to crawl before you can walk. Everyday at school we learn more vocabulary and review what we have already learned. Then, we practice our Amharic by playing with toys and dolls and describing what they are doing. (See, I told you we were like babies.) The beautiful thing is, it is actually working! Very, very slowly we absorb Amharic into our minds and then some of it even comes out of our mouths! On the other hand, there are still days in which we feel discouraged by our inability to speak and our unavoidable “foreign-ness”. On those days we pray for God’s grace to be patient with ourselves. We try to remember and accept the fact that we are still babies here…and learning how to walk and talk takes time.

During the Winter Oasis, the Middle School Ministry is offering parents a chance to learn with their middle school children! This is an age where many life-changing decisions are made by students, especially relating to their identity in Christ. This class is a chance for parents to explore questions with their son or daughter. The classes will be separated by gender in order to focus on specific issues. Goal Setting January is a time of reflection and opportunity. We can often be amazed at how fast the previous year flew by. Many times this brings questions regarding how we used our time and what we accomplished with each of those 365 days. Do we have anything to show for all the time God allowed us to have with Him, our family, our friends, and our church body? This time of year should also bring dreams about what we can do with the year ahead, 8,760 hours that can be intentionally designed and lived to accomplish or experience the things that are important to us. We are charged with the responsibility of deciding what is important, for God has entrusted us with the stewardship of our lives.

How do we best live ‘on purpose’ or intentionally? I believe in the power of goals, specifically written goals. A study was conducted by Gail Matthews of Dominican University which showed a significant improvement in the accomplishment of goals by those who wrote their

goals over those that did not. The same study also showed that those who took two additional steps accomplished even more. These additional steps are, sharing the goals with a friend and then being accountable by giving someone a weekly report on the progress toward the goals. So what do you dream? To be a well-rounded person, I believe our goals need to fall into seven areas: Career, Family, Financial, Intellectual, Physical, Social, and Spiritual. These areas are listed alphabetically, because we, as individuals, need to prayerfully decide which areas are most important to us. I encourage you to think about at least one goal in each of these areas of your life. Then, take the time to write down these goals! If you really want to show your commitment, share your goals with a close friend or family member and then consider finding someone to whom you can be accountable on a regular basis. Jesus loves us and accepts us as we are when we come to Him, but He doesn’t want us to stay that way. We are supposed to grow in grace and in our likeness to Him. We don’t usually grow in leaps and bounds, but little by little. It will take effort and determination on our part. Like the Apostle Paul said in Philippians 3:12, “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ

Jesus took hold of me.” When we continue growing, we can, and will, be used of God for His purposes.

Greg and Vicki Syverson Greg and Vicki Syverson, our missionaries in Pachuca, Mexico, and their two sons, Benjamin (9) and Matthew (7), are in the states on furlough. They will be sharing about their ministry in Pachuca with the TCCC family during January and February while living in the TCCC mission house. Greg and Vicki have lived and ministered in Pachuca, a city of 1.5 million, since 2002. They began by working alongside a local church to reach out into an impoverished community. In 2009 they planted Iglesia Cristiana Nueva Vida (New Life Christian Church) in that community, working together with a team of national leaders. They started with 14 people on their first Sunday and have grown to 130 regularly attending on Sundays, with more attending in their weekly cell groups that meet in homes. Greg and Vicki felt God leading them toward a strong emphasis on prayer, and through the power of prayer they have seen God do amazing things in the church and community. The members are active in outreach and serving. Young people are being trained and sent out to other countries as missionaries. Several new leaders are being trained to lead cell groups and other outreach ministries. The church is continuing to grow and has expanded the current meeting space.

In August 2013, New Life Christian Church was turned over completely to national leadership. Now, Greg and Vicki are preparing to return to Pachuca in mid-2014 to train more leaders to plant additional churches in and around Pachuca, as well as other parts of Mexico.

While the Syversons are with us be sure to get to know them and learn about the work they are doing in God’s Kingdom.

Reflections As we sit and reflect on another year gone by, many memories, joys, heartbreaks, trials, and blessings may come to mind. It is always nice to be able to look back and see where the Lord was leading us and what he was teaching us. Many

times it is much easier to see things from God’s perspective when we can look back on things. He gives us new perspective with each passing day. He is constantly making us new.

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”

-2 Corinthians 5:17

I think one of the greatest things about God is that He has grace for each and every day. Not just the day when we came to know Him personally. Not just the day that was really terrible and we felt far away from Him. Not just that day when we flew off the handle and said things we didn’t mean to someone we love. He has grace for each and every day of our lives. His mercy is new every morning.

“The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning;

Great is Your faithfulness.”~Lamentations 3:22-23

In this new year, may we remember how faithful the God of the universe has been to us. His mercies are new each and every day. May we commit to being faithful to Him, as He has been so faithful to us, each and every day!

How Do You See God? In the month leading up to Christmas we looked at what the Bible says about the Trinity. It’s a great way to understand the importance of what we celebrate on Christmas day. To introduce the subject to our students, we all drew how we envision God on a piece of paper, which we then shared with everyone else. The results were eye-opening! Some kids drew symbols, others drew pictures of a man with a beard, some drew abstract images, and one student even drew a big eye. The way they envisioned God was varied, but there was one constant throughout as they explained their drawings. Their visions of God were shaped by significant people in their lives. Parents, grandparents, extended family, and even lost loved ones all shaped how our students came to see God. Paul reminds his protege, Timothy, to remember the faith that was handed down to him by his mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois, in 2 Timothy 1:5. Paul even mentions in the previous verse, the faith Timothy received from his family was so sincere that it moved Paul to tears. Timothy’s faith, and the future of the churches to which Paul had assigned him, were both shaped by the faith that he saw in his own family. So, if you wonder how your child sees God and how they feel about their faith, it is significantly shaped by how they interact with you! Our hope in the student ministries is to partner

alongside parents and train up disciples together, because we can never care for them in quite the same way that you do. And that care is meant to be a reflection of the love which God has shown to all of us!

People Who Serve Children Make A Difference“There is no better place to serve than the public school, and it seems to me that if a public school wants Christian people, then Christian people should go serve in the school.” Ron Collins

Ron Collins has a passion to help people learn to read. Starting as a boy, he watched his parents struggle with the ability to read. During his career, he helped a young man receive the proper education in reading so he could read his Bible. After Ron retired, he met Fred Mitchell at the Bluegrass Christian Men’s Fellowship. It was at this meeting that Ron realized he could really make a difference during retirement. Mr. Mitchell was looking for someone to help the children at Russell Cave Elementary learn to read. Ron took a step of faith, volunteered his time and energy, and God made things happen. Soon, they had collected more than 2,000 books for a library, gathered volunteers, and created a program called, “Kids Reading Better.” The program is now titled, “Ron A. Collins Reading Program,” and serves 45 children. Two years later, Julius Marks Elementary opened the door for a partnership with TCCC, and Ron had two connections. He had a passion to help kids read and his daughter was a secretary at the school. At JME he is known as Mr. C. Every week he serves 3 hours on Tuesdays with a variety of children from all walks of life. He shares his other passions of poetry and painting with the children and staff. He has fun joking with the kids and loves listening to the children read. His greatest joy is when a child works hard and makes progress. At 79 years old, Mr. C. has some advice for others…

“Kids are starved for love. They are starved for men in their lives. It is a great way for men to give back… As long as you are able to function you should at least try. You may not like it. You

may want to change it. But you have to at least try.” It’s the same challenge he gives the kids he works with each week. You have to at least try. Ron Collins isn’t just trying, he

is faithfully making a difference, because he knows that people who serve children make a difference.

Critterland News Various parents have told me recently that their children love coming on Sunday mornings and specifically mention ’Jesus in the Park’. I see the excitement they have when we open their classroom door and they take off running down the hall! Some children love the songs, some have their memory verse memorized the moment they hear it, and some love to be involved in the stories!

We are so excited to be taking “The Story” journey with the rest of the church. The preschool age is when children first hear all of the wonderful words the Bible has for them, and they will continue to learn each week all the things that show God’s love for them. Every time a child expresses an interest in being baptized it is like embarking on a new journey that has never been traveled. Each child is unique and their motives are pure. To some it’s a simple decision. For 9 year old Matthew Hines, it needed to happen. He wanted to be clean! Matthew and his brother, Nathan, are homeschooled by their mom, Sarah. One day

while Sarah was working with Nathan, Matthew made a fast appearance. He quickly interrupted his mom and explained to her that he wanted to

start his relationship with Jesus right away. Together they talked. Then, Sarah sent a message to Matt Lee asking him what was next. Matthew was challenged to complete a Rescue Manual to encourage him in this decision to be a follower of Christ. Matthew finished his packet in record time and a meeting was set up. The entire family met with Matt, and Matthew listened intently. At the end of their talk Matthew knew he was ready to follow Jesus and be baptized, but there was one major problem. His grandparents wouldn’t be back from Hawaii in time so Matthew wanted to wait. For the next few days Matthew wrestled with his decision. Once Matthew’s grandparents gave him their blessing, Matthew was ready. The next Sunday, November 24th, Matthew Hines was baptized by his dad, Chris, and we can’t wait to see what God does through Matthew!
